Here's the best reason Yao wont defect .......... Money.

Why is Yao appealing to most advertisers? Because of his status with 1.2 billion consumers. The money that he gets from endorsement is huge and will probably be more than what he makes in contract values for years to come. Now, if Yao defects, and with currently a farily high degree of nationalism going on in China, Yao would not be appealing at all to advertisers if the fastest growing country economically rejects him. If Yao is really self interested, he'll continue to play for the national team, if he's trully altrustic (honorable, loyal, etc) he'll continue to play for the national team.

So the conclusion..... Yao will continue to play for the national team. The best thing we can do is continuing to send coaches to China and educate them and make it more scientific. I'm still pissed that China can hire Milo for their soccer team but still have 3rd rate coaches for their national team. Maybe if Basketball gets more popular in China sigh.

Don't be a instigator on this or joke about it please . Zhizhi Wang disappointed us already with a lot of "helps" from his so called new friends in US.
I don't want Yao be the second, I don't want to see he lose his Chinese fans and market in China, I don't want to see Yao leave Rockets because of any anti-country activity, like Zhizhi left Mavs.

Yao is a good boy, let good boy only do good things.

If Yao needs rest (which I don't agree with anyway), why is it the Chinese have to give it to him? Why isn't anyone saying the Rockets need to let him rest part of the season? If it were me in Yao's shoes, and my many playing obligations got the best of me, I'd drop the NBA and play for my country. All indications I've seen are that Yao has the same priority. You'll argue that Yao will better realize his potential in the NBA, but what's the point of maximizing his potential if he can't use his talents to represent his country? Would ya'll denounce your country just to further your already very successful career?

    Are you serious?????????

Lets see..................The NBA has the best players in the world.....is one of the most popular sports in the world......and they pay you millions to play the game you love to play???

Yea I'd probably drop the NBA and play FIBA ball also:rolleyes:

YAO will reach his potential only by playin NBA ball not playin for the national team.......and China knows that as well as everyone else in the world........Thats why they let him come here.......they knew they could reap the benefits of the NBA marketing machine....the same machine that created AIR jordan , AI, TMAC, KOBE, SHAQ, AND VINCE and now YAO

The chinese know they have benefits from him playin here...

Who cares anyway.......He gets paid to play 82 games from us out of a year against monsters like Duncan, Shaq, Garnett......the guy needs to rechrge his batteries at some point

I thought I already addressed the issue before it was even raised.

Yao won't be paid very well in the NBA or in the CBA. The Chinese are taking a big chunk of his money from playing overseas. So, the millions are actually pretty modest.

As I said, what's the point of reaching his potential if he can't use that talent for what he wants. If playing in the NBA to hone his skills is just a means to an end, with that end being Chinese greatness in Olympic basketball, and then he doesn't ever represent China, then what was the point of it all? It seems like a case of the means justifying the end, so to speak.

I doubt the government cares much about Yao's endorsement deals other than the glory it brings the country. There is a measure of that, but it would be completely negated if Yao were to defect. Do you think they'd be happy to see Wang with a big endorsement deal?

As Rockets fans, we care primarily about the Rockets' success, so Yao putting his priority there is obviously best for us. But suggestions he defect assume too much ownership of him. He's not here to serve our whims. Why should he betray his country to satisfy the desires of a mercenary league? Why would his priority have him sacrifice his national duty so he can maximize your enjoyment? It's ridiculous.

Dude.....once again for all the slower learners in the class......

Yao can not play here all season....and then turnaround and play all summer long year in and year out simple as that....whether its for NBA or national team glory it can't be done every single summer....he won't last long no matter how much me and you agree or disagree........something has got to give one way or another

And for the umteenth time.....i don't care if he defects or not.....whether he's here or in China or not.......he needs rest...thats my only concern....rest not defect or not defect.....thats not my choice or goal of this post...my point was our franchise center bein run into the ground....

Alright, so I'll say again: if he needs rest, why aren't you suggesting that he sit out the first month or two of the NBA season?

This is his job homie.......you know....that thing everybody goes to everyday..........

Do you just walk off your job or have the power to......I don't know that many people that can....except maybe yourself.....

YAO is employed by the houston Rockets........this is his J.O.B

Not a hobby or past time.....he's paid millions to do a job...theres a difference

Servin your country is a choice to represent your country, not something you do for a livin or a paycheck

Do you see Shaq playin olympic ball every summer......what about Kobe or A.I.........................the answer is no

They pick different players almost every summer......not the exact same players every single summer.........You don't see us runnin our superstars into the ground every single summer......

    ummmm..not in China it's not.

Which reminds me of a Yakov Smirnof line:

"America is great...in America you can always find a party. In Russia, party finds you."

I believe most of the reports are over reaction, however, he is China's b*tch forever and will be over committed in the coming years...his prime years...

I don't think it's so far fetched for the Rox to have a vested interest in what he does in the off-season...

    exactly.

    and, in regards ...
i guess apart from the popularity the main reason is their soccer is worse than their bball when compare to other Asian countries. they had been struggling for years to get into the world cup and finally successed last time. in terms of bball, the Chinese NT has been one of the best if not the best in Asia for years. so, if it's not broken why fix it.

To be fair, Dream was playing at Fonde against the likes of Moses, Sampson, and others. Yao is playing against Menk Bateer for crying out loud. Not exactly the same type of education that Dream got from Malone.

wow... nice, although probably debatable point. :)

there's one thing I have to agree at least, although as a rocket fan we can be totally rocket centered, we do have to respect others who are not obliged to make rockets their #1 priority.

--and to me, whether yao is obliged to do that is debatable. just the same as whether yao is obliged to return half his income to CBA is quite questionable.

OK, I held out this long until now. While I strongly agrees with that Yao desperately needs rest, I wonder if all of you know what you want. I think everybody here agrees that Yao ran out of gas
at the end of last season, after which just about every one of you said he needs to improve on

    1. Strength
    2. Stamina
    3. Aggressiveness

While retaining his shooting touch. At the time I thought it was a tall order, if even possible. Aggressiveness can be done pretty easily and it appears that Yao has grasped it from his recent
exhibition games, but what about strength and stamina? Yao gained wait (and also appears more toned), minus the maybe 5 lbs of flab on his belly he looks pretty good, but now suddenly all of you say he's fat and overweight. So suddenly we're talking about Chinese diet that sucks.

Stamina, there is no magic way to improve it, you go out and run your laps. Gradually so your body adapts. What do you want here? Do we want him to run his laps and improve his stamina or not? Now we're saying that Chinese method sucks compared to American one, which there is absolutely no proof of that. I don't try to argue which one is better (and make no attempts to do so) because I never trained under the Chinese system, but neither have any of you, so technically none of you knows whether it works or not either.

Shooting touch, you get this by doing drills, shoot the same shots over and over again until it becomes second nature. Yao got his good shooting touch from the Chinese, so you're telling me their method sucks? I'll tell you this, if we run drills for Cat, SF and Mooch to do PnR all day I'd be ecstatic. Who cares if some whiney b**** star says it's boring, it works.

Btw, the top nation in weightlifting on this planet, as proven by the World Championships and Olympics, is China, not the US. I think that should say something about their weight training program.

Defection is easy to say if you aren't the one defecting. But, I am sure that Yao has thought about it, but if he did he would not be able to represent his home country in the Olympics, and possibly not even be able to step foot in his homeland. That is a lot to deal with when you are only 22 years old. But I don't believe that they are working him too hard. Nowadays, more and more players are starting their offseason right after the season ends. They want to stay in shape and the Euro Championships and the Asian Games and the the Tournament of the Americas are being played, and so on. There are players playing for a very long time throughout the year, including the NBA offseason.

Let's wait and see how Yao plays in the 2nd half of the season this year. Then we can debate on this again.
