Are you 10 years old? Go to ESPN classic and see what Hakeem was called "The Team"

Yao or Hakeem? Who would I take? I would have to take Hakeem because the Hakeem coming out of college would never have me worried that he could quite possibly get outmuscled by Lisa Leslie.
Yao on the other hand... I still wonder....

OMG!!!!!!!!!!! Yao has more skill than DREAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You kidden. Dream was wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy more athletic than Yao. It doesnt matter who started first. Dream still was more athletic, had more skill, was even marketable too.
When you say stupid poll, do you mean its obvious that Yao is better than Dream:rolleyes: !!!!!!!! Damn your a real fool. Yao doesnt have the potential to be one of the best ever to play in the NBA.

I agreed Dream has more atheleticism than Yao. I just said Yao has more skills & understanding in his Rookie year, and dream on the other hand, has great raw talent & and not as refined.

I said stupid poll because it's obvious choice for people to pick Dream, but I bet to defer because it's not fair to compare Dream with Yao because it's Yao's 1st year & Dream is a hall of famer. I am just saying if I have to pick #1, I would go with Yao or Michael Jordan if it's the year Dream came out.

If Yao doesn't have the potential to be one of the best ever play, then I guess it doesn't mean anything when Dream says, "sky is the limit for Yao". Or similar things said by various nba past great players.

I didn't know there's a direct corrolation between athleticism and potential. I always knew that athleticism was important but didn't know that it makes or breaks a player. Darius Miles anyone? Even Jordan didn't win until he developed a jump shot and because a better team player.

So how do you know Yao won't be the top 10? Yao doesn't have more potential than Dream? What I can say is that Dream was a lot more NBA ready then Yao. Yao is not super, but already pretty good, and he's smart. When dream came in, he already had his post moves, his athleticism and his defence. Yao still has to learn those. Translation: Dream was close to his peak when he came in, Yao is still not there yet. After he does learn to do those better then I'll make a judgement on who's better.

Um, Dream had better post moves, but Yao shoots better, passes better and got better court vision. I didn't know athleticism equate skills.

Dream actually shoots better having fg% of 52% in some seasons. Dream also can pass averaging almost 4 assits per game in some season which i see yao never doing.

I say Yao will average more than 4 assists per game at least once during his career. Get back to me in year 2016 and we will see who is right. :)

It is really pointless to compare these 2 at this moment.

You are using Dream's best stats against Yao's rookie season stats. Is this fair? After rox well establish offensive scheme and utilize Yao correctly, with Yao's court vision and passing, I think he can easily beat 4 apg. If Yao can reach Sabonis level, he may even reach 7-8 assist per game! (with longer MPG). Also I do agree that Yao has a softer touch than hakeem does in terms of pure shooting.

As many already pointed out, they are different type of players!

Honestly I hate a poll like this, for rox's success, what are we hoping for, uh?

Hakeem brought alot to the Rox yeS, BUT THAT IS in the past. we must focus on the future which is Yao. Who the hell started this post anyway. Its nothing more than a hangout for Yao bashers.

Its is dumb to compare the two anyway. Two different eras . The people who say Yao will never be a great player are just plain ignorant. Last time I checked he was a Rocket. Why do you guys continue to put down one of our own? Its like Laker fans comparing Kareem and Shaq. Both are great, but from two different eras.

I do not see any Francis or Calvin Murphy ,who would you take threads. so stop all the ignorant comments on how not so great Yao will be. HE IS ON OUR TEAM!

Okay, i had kept myself from entering this thread because I knew right away how stupid it was. But, my curiosity got the best of me. I entered...and wished I hadnt.

For those of you that would actually take Yao over Hakeem...I really feel sorry for you. No NBA fan would ever come to that conclusion...ever. It is absolutely absurd. I actually read every post in this thread and the fact that people are actually coming up with reasons as to why Yao is better than Hakeem is probably the funniest thing I have seen in quite some time.

Yao will never reach Hakeem's status. Never.

well it does. assuming we're counting rolling all physical skills into athleticism, the athleticism lets you get post position, hold post position, back people down, jump over people to shoot, jump for blocks, and run fast to beat your man down the court or to cover on D. those are all skills necessary for succes as a big man and hakeem had those as a rookie while yao doesn't b/c of athleticism. also, hakeem had amazing timing on blocks and an amazing ability to jump a second time for blocks. all skills yao doesn't have.

geez, why am i even wasting my time defending hakeem over yao.

as for yao's potential, his smarts are a reason he does have great potential if he can ever get his body to catch up. and i for one hope he lives up to it and there is a thread one day comparing yao to hakeem and i actually have to think about it b/c if i have to think about it, i'll also have to think about the extra rings we've won in the interim.

Yao's marketability is not a given. If he doesn't become a really dominant player soon, his appeal will go away. Hell, Nike signed Yao for $20 Mil and LeBron for $90 Mil. That should tell you something right there.

Also, the problem with people's arguements for Yao being the best ever is that they always say, "if you put Yao in the right system" and "if you give him the right teammates" and "if his teammates do the right things" then he will be the greatest player of all time.

True great players don't need help to be great. You put Jordan, Magic, Bird, Hakeem, Malone, Kareem, Wilt, or any of the other great players in the history of this league in ANY system with ANY teammates and they would still be great. They would still be dominant. Period. Put Shaq in ANY system and ANY teammates and he would still be dominant.

Also Yao is too much of a softee to be an all time great player.
