ESPN 2007 - Yao should score more than Iverson. Yao 7'6 > Inverson 6'

I can understand where this belief comes from. However if I examine the data I find something very different.

Looking back over his career I can't find any other "streak" of playing remotely close to the performance he's putting up over the last 32 games. The impressive play over the last 32 games gives me a lot of encouragement that his upswing in performance is more than just an anomaly.

This is a different Yao --- he put together streaks where he had good numbers before but never the all around play. He's even playing more minutes w/out falling apart and he is a defensive presence.

Yao is (not will be) an elite center.

It's one thing for us schmucks to take notice of Yao's overall change, but it's more important that Yao has that epiphany where he figures out the game. With some players, it's finding that niche or becoming a semi-star, but with Yao, it's that he can dominate and is capable of doing so almost anytime he feels.

I loved reading that. It's a whole new confidence level.

I've heard a lot of NBA veterans talk about young players in the respect that some figure it out and some don't. Those players that figure out how the NBA game works (normally in their 2nd or 3rd year), something just clicks with them... and I can't better describe Yao's recent performances any better.

Spot on. Confidence is almost the most important thing in high level compitition. Yao's game flow and decision making are just much much faster than before. He went for block or simply stayed out of it, if he couldn't do it, he no longer hesitates with his moves to pick up those tick-tack fouls. Once he believes himself totally, he can only go up. Can't wait that to happen.

Yeah, and thank God Jerome James went to the East so Yao could move on up a spot.

Did anyone notice that JVG kept Yao in even though we had a big lead in the 4th quarter and took him out right after he got the 13th rebound? I think despite what JVG says about not caring for stats, he was tracking Yao's numbers as closely as some of us here and wanted him to get to 20/10 as much as we did.

That...or he kept Yao in while the game was in doubt, and took him out when we had a 20 point lead with 5 minutes to play.

Unless... Tango, any chance you're bald, from New York, and look like you haven't slept in 17 years?

I think it's the assistant coaches job to track numbers and let the coach know, but no doubt it was JVG's decision. JVG absolutely loves Yao - everything about him. He's always trying to promote him and talk about what a class-act the guy is. I'm sure trying to get Yao some national recognition for his performance lately factored into Yao remaining in the game :)
