Oh, just to finish off the math, Yao's a BETTER rebounder (per 48 minutes) than:

    - Elton Brand,
    - Chris Webber,
    - Kurt Thomas,
    - Othella Harrington,
    - Brad Miller,
    - Lorenzen Wright,
    - Ilgauskas,
    - K-Martin,
    - Ostertag,
    - Nowitzki,
    - Keon Clark,
    - Olowokandi,
    - Theo Ratliff,
    - Pau Gasol,
    - Dale Davis,
    - Eddie Griffin....

But he's "disappointing" on the boards. Ok...

8 boards in less than 30 minutes isn't bad.

Yao's just not consistent. he'll have 12 one night then 6 another. In any case, rebounding has become a forward's game. Bizarre.

Yao would have to b**** slap Steve in mid air to get about 3 more rebounds a game. Yao should hurl Steve to mid court so that Steve can get the outlet pass from Yao, and commence a fast break.
Seriously, Yao lets a LOT of rebounds go for his teammates if they are next to him. I guess it's better than having 2 players fighting over an easy rebound, and then losing it out of bounds. That's happened a lot earlier in the season.

Yao Ming's style of play just isn't very compatible with the rest of his teammates. If we can trade him for Ben Wallace, everyone would be happier.

Yao Ming is not great at positioning or rebounding or enthusiastic determination. Three months working under Moses Malone will take care of this. I put it down to poor Big Man coaching/and or direction on the Rox.

I totally agree. Yao only cares about numbers and not about padding his stat sheet with meaningless numbers. I remember when Magic Johnson made his "come back", he would always out box his teammates on routine rebounds where there were nothing but purple and gold jerseys around. Just his way of padding his stat sheet to squeeze off a few more triple doubles. That's just sad.

EXACTLY Inconsistent is the word that describes the whole team. Every player is that way. Though, they are young and a new team playing together, and Yao is a ROOKIE. Man...I cant wait to see them play in a few years.

A few facts about the rebounding...

Yao is averaging the same number of rebounds per minute that Shaq is.

We're 3rd in the league in team rebounding behind the Lakers and Golden State (1st)

We're 2nd in Rebounding Differential... We're +4.1 behind the Lakers and Utah (1st with +5)

Statistically, Yao could definitely pull a few more as it has been pointed out that he often lets his teammates grab ones that he clearly could have. But he definitely will hopefully get better position and not have to rely on tapping the ball out so much.

It's scary how good Yao could be...a few less turnovers, a few more rebounds, less fatigue, etc.

dont you know every one here wants them to win yesterday?;)

but on tha real... rebounding is all about who wants the ball more.

yeah your right they will never be able to play together, why did we draft the ROY anyway...

oh yeah it takes time for a team to be able to truely know how to play with each other.... time=more than 1 season

it that yaos per 48 vs everyone numbers as is or per 48 for them as well.... and that really doesnt mean that if yao is out there he will have a set average anyways... he has to want the ball more to get the ball more(thats rebound talk right there)

Thats not true. Yao aint no great leaper, but he could definitely jump higher than TWO inches. More importantly, he is a SLOW jumper.

Uh... it's definitely Yao's per 48 versus per 48 for the other players as well.

And yea, for those who glanced passed the list... Yao's rebounding numbers are better right now as a (tired and overly humble) rookie, than: Elton Brand, Olowokandi, Brad Miller, Webber, Kurt Thomas, Ratliff, Kenyon Martin, Nowitzki, Ilgauskas...

And I think Yao's numbers are inconsistent/fluctuate from game to game because a lot depends on how he's used in a particular game. If he's shooting a lot from the outside, then he's not in position to get the 3-4 offensive rebounds he'd normally get. If/when he settles into a more regular offensive rotation, then I'd expect his rebounding to even up... probably around the 10 rb a game range.

Yao definite has to improve his rebounding - I believe he will in the off season with proper training and increase in strength and quickness.

That said Yao is presently averaging the highest number of rebounds per game for a Rockects center since 1998/1999 season When Hakeem averaged 9.6 per game (in 50 games). Go figure!
