Not so much this season, but last season and in previous years the Rockets often went with a 3-point shooting 4 next to Yao for stretches during a game.

What really makes the magic lineup effective is all the guys can put the ball down and get to the rim. So now, the closeouts are faster.

I'm not sure if Yao can learn anything from howard and vice versa, I do know on this board people will never give him his due just like amare. At first all people on this board ever said was he's a dunker, alley ooper, and all the other stuff related to a guy without skill. Then amare got a jumper, ft shots and now he's still overrated. I don't care what people say, howard is a really good player at a very young age. I mean all nba 2 times before his 23 birthday and maybe a finals appearance is legit.

Best center in the world? Maybe because we are Rocket fans and homers but honestly Dwight is scoring on not only Big Z but Ben Wallace ,Varejo or whatever big man they can throw at him... The Celtics did the same thing and the kid still holds his own. He deserves the praise he gets. Dwight OWNS the paint. Yao is just not that kind of guy and most likely will never be. I'm not saying it's a bad thing that we have Yao because I do still believe he's better than most centers out there. But right now, Dwight is starting prove more and more that he deserves to be in the same league as Yao and could very much be debated that he is in a much higher echelon than Yao. He does what a center is supposed to do and does it well. He is also doing it better than all the centers in the league right now. At 24 he's #1 in Rebounds both offensive and defensive. He's leading the league in Blocks... Subpar post defender?????? He's in the top 3 of effeciency points which is what everyone wants in our wings. In the playoffs he's also leading the whole league in Field Goal percentage. The kid has a chance to get into the Finals right now which is more than what both Tmac and Yao have accomplished. The east is not an easy ride this year like it was a couple years ago. They have some pretty decent teams. He is also doing this with Raefer Alston as his startin PG! Alston is still Alston and he isn't that great but the big man is definitely making it easier for the shooters and vice versa. Like I've said before I still root for the guys who bleed in our Rockets Red White and Silver and I always will. But if a day comes where we trade Tmac for a Lebron James, a Chris Paul or Yao Ming for Dwight Howard as much as I love those two guys I know a trade like that is for the better of this team. But for you Yao fans it is pretty much safe to assume that a trade like that is not happening unless Morey somehow has another magic trick he can pull out of his hat. However if it does, like I said I'll buy the first round of drinks.

It's really amazing that he is not only an NBA player, but a very good one considering he's the 22nd tallest known man and essentially an oaf. The fact that his body is symmetrical and that he moves normally is also amazing.

Yao Ming - Where Amazing Happens.

At the same time, being that big creates serious limitations and we are seeing a lot of them. He would probably be even better with the same shooting touch but instead of 7'6, around 7'1. He would probably be quicker and less injury prone, more than making up for being a little shorter. Being way too tall is not much better than being way too short.

outside of novak, when did we ever have a "3-point shooting 4" on the team, much less "next to yao"? and we all know how much playing time novak got.

and still with the post moves? then we're looking at another td, just a couple of inches taller.

but i guess you're right, being too tall and freakin' big brings as many limitations as advantages.

    agreed.

i think the op meant well for this thread to be a valid bball discussion, just like the post i quoted above. but there are a few posters you-know-who who always bash yao for no reason any chance they get (e.g., see the "yao is not in the same league of dh"); and that brings down the quality of discussions of this board.

and you say I don't watch basketball.

Shaq couldn't guard the pick n roll to save his life, this is some type of way to downgrade Yao and upgrade Howard. You fail to make it quite simple and no, Yao is not a better defender than the DPOY. Stop putting words in my mouth.

When watching the Cavs-magic gams, 3 things struck me:

    1. They never fronted Howard.
    2. Howard, when his post up was called, almost always sealed his man successfully (the only time I saw that he didn't was when LeBron james was on him, and even then he still managed to get the ball)
    3. Howard always beat the defence to his post up position and therefore had the ball in the post ready to back down when the rest of the defence was still beingset up.

The last one was the most important one, as it is the thing that Yao can't physically do for an entire game, which seperates the two. And of course, they didn't front howard since all the MAgic had to do was swing the ball around and throw an alley-oop up to him.

Whatever four 3 point shooting players you may be thinking of, most likely a small lineup in size, it is nothing compared to Orlando's who has a normal sized lineup for the positions. A smaller lineup in size that included multiple players who can't create would put more pressure on the center. Who would you rather have when both teams at the power forward spot go small? Battier or Lewis? 6'8" or 6"10? Someone who stands at the 3 point line or someone who can also put it on the floor?

We only had McGrady to do that until this season, Orlando has 3 players in their starting lineup that can spot up shoot and dribble penetrate. They are also have size for the positions.

Bogus, if Dwight had Yao offensive skills then he would be worth watching. I will take Yao's O and domination over Dwight all day. Dwight should watch Yao shoot the Jump hook with both hands and the fade away jump, Shanghai shake.

Give me a break, we would murder Orlando in the championship. Why, Shane and Artest would lock up Turk and Rashard. He couldn't post Artest and Turk couldn't lose Shane. That's why we dominate a 3 point shooting team.

Agree, Yao is too different from Dwight; Yao is more similar in skill and gifts to Duncan or Gasol!

Being too tall-also makes posting up more difficult as his center of gravity is higher. (This is why taller guards cannot always easily post up shorter guards)

And Yao goes against big men who are used to leveraging their weight to fight for position

Forget it Yao is not Dwight . End of story.

A 2 inch vertical and athleticism of a slug will always hinder Yao.

He just needs to be healthy and avoid getting blocked by guards.

What does "This." mean? I see people post that a lot on message boards in response to a post.

You are right, Yao is just better. Go home, the only reason why you are here in the 1st place is because of T-Mac so you are defending your old homie Dwight.

Yao Ming gets blocked by guards. True, Yao also sent LeBron's crap to Canada while LeBron sent Dwight's crap to Canada TWICE in the playoffs.
