Sometimes you have to wonder where Yao Ming gets his energy?

After playing the Brisbane Bullets in Zhuhai last night, he flew immediately to Beijing, and showed up this morning at 09:30 am in the Reebok's national launch in China a tailored made Yao Ming promotional campaign: "Fuel Yao with Unlimited Power", a campaign to be officially launched in November this year thorughout 2008 for his fans to rave and support Yao Ming in his endeavor to lead China national team for a historical breakthrough in 2008 Olympics.

BEIJING -- NBA superstar Yao Ming apologized to the Houston Rockets on Tuesday, saying he would miss key pre-season training because of commitments to the Special Olympics in Shanghai.

Yao, 27, said he would return to the United States only after next week's launch of the October 2-11 Special Olympics in his home town.

"I expect to be back with the team around October 3," Yao told a press conference here. "I am very sorry that I will not be able to attend the start of training because of work related to the event in Shanghai."

The 7-foot-6 (2.29 meter) center said he is a keen supporter of the Special Olympics and is playing a prominent role in the build-up to the event for intellectually impaired athletes.

The Chinese star player is expected to miss the Rockets' October 1 media day and the first two days of team practice before appearing jet-lagged for the third practice on October 4.

Despite his apology, Yao will face automatic fines probably amounting to around $30,000.

But Yao is anticipating no friction with new coach Rick Adelman. He said the two had already had talks and he was expecting Adelman to bring changes to the Rockets' style of play.

"He probably has his own strategies and I think there will be more physical demands on me in the new strategy," said Yao. "But it is just a change of strategy and I don't think that the physical aspects will be a problem. So I think that I will find my position in the new situation."

While in China, Yao has played three exhibition games with the Chinese national team, winning two and losing one, and said the team was under great pressure heading towards next year's Beijing Olympic Games.

"Our goal in 2008 is to be in the top eight," he said. "We have a lot of pressure but it is impossible not to have pressure for the Olympics. In fact the pressure helps us address the challenges and is driving us on."

He said players like Yi Jianlian, who has signed a multi-year contract with the Milwaukee Bucks, will boost the national team's standards after exposure to the NBA.

"He has a long way to go, but after joining the Bucks he opened a new window for his career and his standards of play will rise and he will bring that extra ability to the national team," Yao said.

The Bucks drafted the 7-foot (2.13-meter) Asian star with the sixth pick in June's National Basketball Association Draft.

The Chinese team has been under attack in the media recently after a string of poor results in Yao's absence.

Earlier this month Yao launched a fierce defense of under-siege national coach Jonas Kazlauskas amid calls for his dismissal.

Kazlauskas was hired in 2005 to see China win a medal at the Beijing Olympics.

It is about ime that Yao Ming keeps on saying this over and over again from now on till he commands respect. Then his team will be truly his! ...................... The Rockets of Course!!!

thanks pryuen.....I don't see it as a big deal that Yao is missing the start...he is doing it for a good cause...not like some of these otehr punk players who miss training camp just to be lazy and sit on their A$$es

Olympic basketball hopes in jeopardy: Yao

Basketball superstar Yao Ming is worried that China's recent shaky performances will cost it its lofty ambitions at next year's Beijing Olympic Games.

"The rivals of our recent warm-ups are not big teams," said the Houston Rockets star center. "But we still failed to play our game throughout the matches.

"This is the biggest problem right now for the national team."

Hopes are high that Coach Jonas Kazlauskas's team will achieve a podium finish at the Beijing Olympics, or at least a better place than the country's previous best of eighth.

But Yao is anything but upbeat about the team's prospects.

"At the Beijing Olympics, we will have totally different teams to play and all the matches are played successively," he said.

"We have to perform our best in a consistent way if we have to win and advance. If we lose some matches due to lack of concentration, we might have no chance at all."

The NBA All-Star joined the national team earlier this month and together with Milwaukee Bucks' new Chinese marquee Yi Jianlian led it to an unconvincing 5-1 record against two Australian clubs.

The players squandered big leads during the matches and continued to struggle to score points, especially when Yao was benched.

"Sometimes we can play very good game, but sometimes we could not," Yao said.

"It means we have to take more systematic trainings in the following time."

But the 226cm giant also pointed out some positives, singling out fellow big man Yi, the 2007 NBA No 6 draft pick, as strong backup inside the paint.

"He showed how good basketball he could play. I am sure he will give something more to the team after playing in the NBA season.

"We will have bigger advantage in the paint in the next year after Yi makes further progress from the world's best league."

Yao plans to fly to the US on October 3 to join Houston's preseason training camp, but he admits he is behind in preparations for the NBA season.

"We have flown to different places to compete since I got married," he said.

"I was short of systematic trainings. I am not 100 percent fit and I am so much worried (about the preparation for the NBA new season).

Coming into his sixth NBA season, which tips off on October 30, under new coach Rick Adelman, a more mature Yao refuses to detail the club's target.

"I think I should not say too much. Action speaks louder than words. Like we were highly expected last season but did not reach it. In the new season, we will come out even stronger and step further in the playoffs."

Determination and perseverance have powered Yao's illustrious basketball career, beginning in the Chinese Basketball Association, then the Asian Basketball Championships and rocketing to NBA All-Star status.

He has become a revered athlete with a huge global fan base.

Yao's increasing popularity and influence make him the favorite of sponsors.

Sportswear company Reebok and Yao teamed up on Tuesday in Beijing to unveil he brand's latest marketing and advertising campaign - "Fuel Yao's Unlimited Power."

Yao Ming left Beijing last evening to rejoin the national team in Hefei, Anhui, and attended the team practice/scrimmage this morning in preparation of their game with Sydney Kings tomorrow night (September 28)

Man..... the national team had their second team practice/scrimmage this evening in Hefei, Anhui.

It looked like the sage advice of Yao Ming that the national team players had been over-worked and trained had not been heard.

Yao Ming and his national team team mates at the pre-game warm-up with Sydney Kings.

Yao Ming went to the hospital late last night for some anti-biotic injection to cure a slight influenza which was spreading through the team.

Wang Zhizhi was also rushed to hospital last night for same treatment. With a more severe leg injury still to recover fully, he will not play tonight.

Sun Yue got infected as well, and was sent to hospital for treatment and won't be playing tonight.

So there could be just a few players left in the rotation. Let's see whether the influenza will affect Yao Ming's performance.

Anthony Falsone is still on Yao Ming's payroll; he was in China in July assisting Yao Ming in his rehabilitation/conditioning, but had flown back to USA in early August, when Yao Ming was busy in his wedding/honeymoon.

He will surely rejoin Yao Ming when he returns to Houston on October 4 for the preseason training camp.
