Honestly, in opinion, if Yao wants to rebound he can get 20++ every game. I remembered him getting 22 against Phoenix once. However, I have seen him grabbing more rebound actively or more forceful recently. I just get a feeling that Yao try not to hurt people when he tries to grab rebound aggresively and of course, a possibility of hurting himself as well if any collision of players took place. Hence, he is getting about 10 rebound on the average now. Can imagine if Yao chase every rebound in the paint aggressively, the chances of collision would be high and it's going to be risky. When you chase for rebound, your eyes will be on the ball, not on the path.
I don't think that's the difference. Yao's defensive rebounding has actually declined a bit this year.
Desire? You can have more desire than Chuck and still come up with 0 rebounds. Desire + technic + reaction + agility + strength + height + ... =rebounds. Desire itself gives you nothing.
You obviously don't understand my point. The guy thinks height == rebounds. I told him even if he's much taller than Boykins, he'd lose rebounding war against him. In other words, height doesn't equal to rebounds. Is it so hard to understand?
That is because we are not playing the same level of defense as last year. Teams are making more shots on us. If we could play defense better, then maybe Yao can average 12 a game.
I don't think it's less missed shots ... his defensive rebounding percentage has decreased. Yao's improvement in rebounding is happening on the offensive end.
