    I love this guy...

I'm biased because he's a Rocket, but you know he's genuine...

He always seems to have a positive attitude and doesn't b**** and whine about being left out of the game sometimes...

    :)

For those who wonder about Yao's "Griffin hating/dissing," my feeling is that Griffin is the only starter younger than Yao (and Griffin is not much better than Yao in terms of experience either). Yao's talking about Griffin is like a big brother talking about his kid brother. He thinks he should "remind" Griffin a thing or two about how to play ball. But being a Chinese, Yao is always reverential to the more senior members of the team.

    A couple of things:

    - Few people are saying Yao's crazy for having these opinions. If Yao was telling his parents "Griffin doesn't pass enough", I don't think anyone was surprised. But some people seem annoyed that he's taking a shot "publically" at EG through the press.

    - I think for Yao, he still thinks of the Chinese media/public as being on "his side", part of the family... and when you're with family, you don't need to keep things politically correct. Yes, Yang Yi is a reporter, but to Yao, I think he's a member of the Chinese family, and his reporting is just intended to keep the other members of Yao's Chinese family informed.

    - Yao treats the American media/fans as the true "public". He watches his comments carefully (thus, the translator). He *always* says the right thing about everyone.

If/when the lines between family/outside becomes blurred, as Yao realizes that the things he tells the Chinese family are being spread to the outside public world, I'd expect him to tone it down... publically. He'll treat the press the way we expect him to treat the press.

Excellent points. Another thing is that Yao may never think those conversations have been translated into English and posted on this board. I enjoy reading the "real" Yao very much. He never meant to take a shot on EG or Divac. Please don't make it a big deal for some of Yao's improper remark. Yang Yi is the only source to Yao's inside world. I do feel Yao will change the way he talks when he lives longer in US.

Has the meaning of Yao's comments been lost in translation. Was he really being cocky or was he just being playful?

stop being so cocky yourself kid... i have read english interviews, but even i know he wont be the same... its the same way with latin baseball players... example, im sure samy sosa doesnt say "baseball has been berry berry good to me" in spanish interviews.

if you know where i can get good translated interviews of yao i, and a lot of other fans, would appreciate it:D

and on the record i say griff is older than yao... griff in going on 2 and yao is still going on 1... most nba players dont really let you know what kind of player they really are untill about there 3rd or 4th year, not when they are 24 or 22 years old

I'm not trying to knock on any translator on here, they have been doing great. I just want to find out about interview for myself. I can't read Chinese so I asked a friend of mine who can. She said, there is no cockiness or arrogance in his interview. She thought it was just a normal friendly conversation between two guy friends. I guess a few of us are getting overly obsessive about Yao's every move and start to flip out about the tinniest things that he says or does.

Let's relax folks and enjoy his progress and developments. I believe Yao is genuinely nice and humble person with great dignity he has to, he was raised that way and he's representing 1 billion plus people. Yao has been here for only 5 months and he already brought in more good things for Houston than the insignifficant things that a few people on here are concerning about. :)

i am so glad yao is a rocket, and i know he will be with us for a long while.

with that said, he still needs to be carefull about what he says cuz it can bite him in the end... get it in the end..lol.. but anyways, look at LA when shaq talks about fox, or goerge behind there backs joking or not.... it gets blown up, and i dont want that to happen to the rockets... it sux big time...

and i know he was talking to a friend... but he might need to tell his friend that some of what he says might be better not heard by others, loose lips sink ships.

Now I see why media has so much influence on people's opinion. I read it in Chinese, and it is just playful talk about the game. Just like what I usually chat with playmates after I play soccer. Nothing serious!!!

As for Yao's reference to #33, I kind of agree with him. And I do not feel Yao is criticizing EG. It is just matter of fact that EG is weakest position on the team while there are so many great PF in West. Everytime I watch EG shoot, I feel bad. I just do not trust his playing if I am his teammate. Unfortunately opposing team always leave him alone to shoot 3s and he would just do it. Amazing!

As someone who studied Mandarin for 2 years and speak it fluently, I will give credit to Colin Pine for directly translating whatever Yao Ming says, and not coloring it to make it more "politically correct". This is based just on all the broadcasts in internet videos I've seen of Colin Pine xlating for Yao, which is obviously just a small fraction of the conversations and interviews. I've haven't seen a situation where Mr. Pine had to alter what Mr. Yao said to mke it more "correct". But I did see Mr. Yao once correcting a mistranslation where his feelings apparently didn't come across. Coline Pine is an excellent translator, and I think his Chinese-English/English-Chinese comprehesion-translation exceeds most Chinese bilingual speakers here in the states! But his funky Taiwanese-type accent is definitley something he can improve on. :)
