uhh...not quite. I played on the highest level of D3, and I can guarantee you that the CNT is more on par with a D1 school so the competition will not be THAT bad for Yao. Plus, he'll be playing against some of the best international competition in his first tournament back. Hopefully he'll learn some tricks while he's "rehabing" and can test them out against these other teams.

Lets not keep playnig this cuntural difference bs. Yao has stated he doesn't think its necessary for him to be back in China this year, nor does he want to. he has stated many many times that he wants to rest. YAO obviously doesn't think its any sort of national pride to go back this year. Noone is makin a judgement about the merits of representing your country, we're talking about how YAO doesn't wanna go back

Duh, of course there is a cultural difference. There's a freakin cultural difference between Dallas and Houston...

But to say people here don't think it's an honor to represent their country just isn't true. People wonder why NBA players don't represent their country...because when it comes to basketball, the real gold medal is the NBA finals. Any other sport is different. Gymnastics, whatever...where the olympics or world stage is the pinnicle of the sport. But consider for a moment, even if you disagree....that to Americans, the pinnacle of basketball is the NBA finals...and international competition is a big level drop in competition...why should they risk their health to play in international play. Their bodies have gone through 82+ game season and they are nearly all nursing nagging injuries. The summer is a time to heal. Why sacrafice every year to wipe out competition America sees as second rate. We proved this back in the 90's, 50-some games straight. Most NBA superstars have already played in one Olympiad or WC, but you can't do it every year. The NBA is way too grueling.

I think it's a lot to ask of anyone to play every summer for their country and then go back to their career...when do they heal? Do the Chinese fans on this site think that 2 weeks off is enough? I can tell you that ligaments and knee pain never really fully goes away, I couldn't imagine playing ball year round in college....I tried, but I had to take a few months off even at the age of 22. If Yao doesn't take time off, it's going to break him. Honor your body first ya know what I'm saying?

This is true, I stated this in another thread and got RAILED for it. But of the Chinese businessmen and students I've gotten to know, I don't think they aren't any less hungry for success, money, and power then anyone else....maybe Mainland China is different from Hong Kong...and maybe those Chinese who are interested in not making money or attaining success would stay away from non-Chinese - who knows, I'm just saying people are people and people really aren't all that different.

I agree he needs to be more mentally tough, but so do most people...however, I don't think Yao having to set picks is a big deal...Yao doesn't need rest to catch his breath, he needs rest so that the cracks developing in his bone structure and the microtears in his tendons can heal before things start breaking and tearing.

I don't get it...Yao doesn't want to go back...why make in play in every little tourney against his will...isn't the World Championship and Olympics enough? Why every summer force him to play....you'd think the chinese gov't and the fanatical nationalistic fans like Heech would let him have a break and stop putting all this pressure on him to be the "model worker" even if it means his knees pop out.

See, this thread was originally about what yao wanted, then peopel started saying oh we shouldn't be dissing on yao for going back because its to show his nationalpride, but they forgot yao didn't wanna go back. So those very YOFs who are waving that red flag just dissed on their man. Cuz if you think about it, to them going back equates to national pride, Yao dont' wanna go back, so yao has no national pride.

Which isn't fair to Yao. Just because he doesn't want to go back EVERY summer doesn't mean he lacks national pride. The guy deserves a break, and how much national pride does he have to show to show that he has national pride?

I want the Chinese to be proud, proud of a dominating strong well-rest Yao ready to take on the best basketball players in the world. I don't get what so dishonorable about that!

The CNT officials are just dumb. What pride would they have by winning the Asian Championship again and again? They have already started training for the Asian Championship games in September. WTF, more than 3 months in advance?

Just like their national soccer team, it would be very very difficult for their basketball team to win any medals at the world level with such bad management.

That official did not show any concern about Yao's impending surgery - what he emphasized was Yao's contract with the CNT. This is sad. This is inhuman. This is shame.

I was surprised I didn't see this posted.

I don't know what to think, Yao's statements at the end of the year seemed to indicate differently. If Yao really wants to be there, great. But I think the Rox brass may have asked Feigen to print this one.

Just read an article from sohu (in Chinese):
    http://sports.sohu.com/20050523/n225665547.shtml

    Some interesting information:
    1) Yao is relaxing and has gained more than 10 pounds.
    2) The results of medical check-up is not out so the surgery date is not set yet.
    3) Yao started exercising again recently and shooting some 3pts.
    4) He went to the gym most frequently among the players other than Ward.

Is Ward still planning to come back?
