it's not hard to see why taiwan is sooo important to mainland. mainland is land locked on all sides except east and south. east there is japan allied with US. if taiwan becomes independent, then it's very likely that it will side with US for support. if that's the case, china is locked on all sides. that makes it very hard for resources to come in. if there are any conflicts in the future, you don't want be isolated like that. if mainland takes back control of taiwan, as it should, then mainland has it's door to the rest of the world.

I think it is a great demonstration to Chinese people of Taiwan's de facto independence. Yeah, we CAN reject your people from visiting our country for no apparent reason! What are you gonna do about it? Take us over? "Crush us into dust"?

    Didn't think so... :D

Oh wait... that's right... in order to do that, Taiwan would first have to be ruled by China? How unfortunate! Maybe after China actually learns how to build a blue water navy...

In truth, I think the reason Yao's been rejected is because he's an open Chinese nationalist opposed to Taiwan's sovereignty. Now he's getting a first-hand experience of exactly that sovereignty thrown back at his face.

One thing I love about this BBS, is that I can come here to read up on the Rockets and Rafer and Yao and bait bleeding-red Chinese nationalists at the same time!

I'm not sure why anybody would ever do such a thing. You should be ashamed for even thinking of it.

Probably out with the rest of them, selling lead paint Barbies to get cash to buy some AK-47's to trade to the Janjaweed militiamen in Darfur in exchange for oil....

India is certainly not alone in its passion for Kashmir, a land Pakistan and China are both enamored with. China has slurped up a couple of chunks of it, and Pakistan clings to what it still has. Meanwhile, the fact that the only reason India has any of it is because a minor "royal dude" decided he'd be better off handing the land over to India than to someone else seems to be overlooked by the world community, the part that can find Kashmir on a map, that is. Groovy.

    Impeach Bush and Cheney.

If not a number of people do a remarkable job of pretending. There are perhaps 10 threads over the years where the Chinese posters essentially become functionally catatonic and keep repeating the same posts over and over. I could dig them up if you like.

Lengthy posts too for a bunch of people who don't care about a dinky island.

I wish they wouldn't care so the CCP wouldn't have that tired excuse that by not threatening to invade Taiwan, then it would cause chaos and riots among their people...

lol 10 threads? if you just mention Tibet or Dalai Lama you've got an automatic 10 page monster which reads like a Maoist struggle session from the days of yore. Though my favorites are when the Southern Chinese and Northerners engage in a good old-fashioned set of intra-national handbags, hatfield mccoy style.

Do you really think everyone is going to gang up on China and deny it access to the oceans? I mean, you'd have to have South Korea, Japan, The phillipines, and Taiwan and even then it's not like Taiwan can blockade China.

I think this is just paranoia

China: "Taiwan if you say you are independent we will attack you"

Taiwan: "So as long as we don't say we are independent then we are independent?"

China: "This is the 'One China' policy"

Taiwan: "Well Ok then -- we aren't independent /snicker"

    That's rich.

You are acting like you and your ilk really have anything refreshing to say every time the subject of China is brought up.

Are the generations born before 1978 in the US a bunch of r****ds? If the answer is yes, then I offer my deepest sympathy. If it's no, then tell me why the newer generation of American kids should worry about getting r****ded.

Well, when one country(and I use that term loosely here) is so dependent on another country economically, it's not just the company owners who suffer when the two countries cut off economic ties, which would happen should Taiwan declare independence. The whole economy suffers. That's what I was pointing at.

I agree. It's simply not good PR if China simply invade(or reclaim or however one wants to put it) Taiwan. It seems to me that they just want to make sure Taiwan doesn't do anything drastic that forces their hands.

KingCheetah, you are absolutely correct. And if I were a Taiwanese, this would be my line of thinking. It seems to be the most logical thing in the world. Everyone knows what a joke the so-called "one china policy" is. As long as the Chinese government gets enough face, they're fine with the status quo. What's the point in stiring up the pot?

i dont think yao has ever openly expressed his political views. but i think it's safe to assume he's against taiwan independence. no sane person born and raised in china isn't.
