"This" John Calipari guy from Memphis is one of the best college coaches in the country, and is not clueless about ANYTHING....especially not basketball related. He was simply stating that Yao was willing to have surgery on an injury that didn't necessarily NEED it because he wanted to make sure he would be ready by the Olympics. The injury was already there, and he wasn't going to play for the Rockets anyways. Now, he can at least salvage the Olympics out of it. Yao really strikes a nerve with some of you posters out there.

I just think he misspoke, but as written bloop and pryuen are entirely correct. He seems to be manipulating words to prove his point, but targeting Yao is not his goal in any way. I can't understand anyone defending this guy when it says in plain English
"He had surgery for ONE reason — so he can play and represent China in the Olympics"
There is definitely a negative connotation in his words.

All Calapari pointed out is that Yao or a lot of international players are willing to sacrifice NBA time for surgery in time to make the olympics and most US players will sacrifice the olympics for healing/surgery to play in the NBA.

No knock on Yao he needed the surgery either way.

calm down dude... gross misinterpretation. hes not taking a shot at yao, man.

John Calipari is a great coach and a great guy (keep in mind this is coming from a die-hard Cougar). I can't knock the guy for anything, he's really nice, hes a solid coach, and he looks out for his players.

and dont analyze a speech by a single line. almost every speech could be misinterpreted in that way.

He might of been mispoke, but the fact of the matter is he is biased. Those of you jumped on pryuen owe him an apology. read between the lines, he is questioning US players' heart versus Yao, who went on a great distance to get himself treated before the summer (even at a price of missing rest of the rockets games). that's what he is implying.

i don't think anyone here misunderstood what he really meant. he is not only one who thought in this way. among all rox fans, all nba fans, and all world, i doubt the # of people who have the same thought is small. we have media that spent their time and efforts to paint the issue in this way. it is very normal for him to say that. that is what he believed just like many others. this doesn't mean he took shot at yao. they just guess what the reason behind yao's decision since yao is a celebrity. all his actions will be analysed and guessed. unfortunately, John Calipari talked to the public. his words will be scrutinized.

if we go back to listen the news conference. the doctor said very clearly the surgery is the best option but no one pay attention on what the rox doctor said in a single sentence @ the news conference.

For those who criticize Pryuen overreacting, please answer one simple question: "Was it an option that Yao skipped the surgery and played through it after his team had found out the stress fracture in his feet?" I think not. The surgery is the best Rockets can do for their own best interests, that is a healthy YaoMing next season.

So it's obvious that what Calipari said was baseless even if he didn't have an intention to insult Yao. Olympics is not the reason Yao had surgery, his fractured foot is. The Olympics just happen to be the next possible games Yao can participate.

Pryuen, as a long time Rockets fan, I really admire your dedication to Yao, although sometimes you do overreact a little bit, but not this time IMO.
