The Grizzlies can't decide to take our player once we select him unless we say it's ok. Both sides have to mutually agree to the pick this year for it to work. Next year the Grizzlies get it no matter what. If we have to wait an extra year in order to get Nachbar we should not draft him.
Sports 610 reported 15 minutes ago that Goldberg (rockets lawyer) is still in China negotiating with the Government.
GREAT! FINALLY we get an update! It would be great if we could get everything worked out and have Ming signed before the draft. I think that would ease a lot of people's minds. Plus Ming jerseys could then go on sale the next day after the draft ala David Carr of the Texans. Chris
Nice catch r-fan-since-81 (assuming you caught it first ). Several people on the bbs were wondering where the heck the guy was and what he was doing. So now we know.
I read that Nachbar might not play in the NBA next season if selected #15 and below because he would basically be playing for free. He would owe his team in Europe nearly his entire salary at or around the #15 pick. Here's the math: Year 1 Rookie Scale contract 02'-03 Pick#15 $ 1,082,500 Buyout of Euro contract - $1,000,000 Rocket's contribution to buyout + $ 350,000 ----------------- Total Remaining Salary Left: $ 432,500 He'd still have over $400K in salary next year after paying off his buyout. Depending on how much he's currently making in Europe, that may or may not be a drastic pay cut.
Aelliott, thanks for the breakdown. That is not too bad. From the things I have read he REALLY wants to get over here in the NBA this season so I think that the salary thing will not stop him. If the Rockets draft him and WANT him this season I think Nachbar will be here. He wants to take his game to the next level and knows it will happen in the NBA and wants to get a start on it. Chris
He'd still have over $400K in salary next year after paying off his buyout. Depending on how much he's currently making in Europe, that may or may not be a drastic pay cut. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Compared to Cato, Rice, Mo Taylor and Moochie $400K is peanuts!
Aelliot...what you say makes sense...however, everytime I read something about this guy it says he isn't coming over here if he is not a top 10 pick....there must be some other reasons why...maybe he loses some lucrative endorsements if he leaves. Its not like he will be such an icon over here that he will rake in a ton of endorsements.
NJRocket, I think you are confusing this guy with "Skita". It was him who said he wanted to be in the top 10, which he will be. Chris
No, I realize the differnce. Skita said he wasnt going to enter the draft if he wasnt a top 10 pick...that was per his agent. Nachbar said he wouldnt play here next year if he wasnt a top 10 pick for financial reasons
Ok, I see what you are saying. Still, I haven't read that info about Nachbar and being in the top 10. Where did it state that? All the Nachbar info I have seen hasn't brought that up. I mean, every mock draft I have seen has Nachbar on the outside looking into the top 10. The highest I have seen him is around #13 and I have seen him in the low 20s but mostly in the mid-teens. I would think if this was a HUGE issue this stipulation would be more widely reported. Don't you think? Chris
Aelliott, I've been doing more research on this. This could breakdown differently. His base salary could be 120% of standard rookie scale, or he can exceed the $350,000 "foreign player payment" as a signing bonus up to 120% of standard rookie scale. That gives him another $200,000, leaving him only $450K to pay. For that, it would be easy enough for him to get a secured loan from the bank, given that he has a 3yr guaranteed contract.
I like what Posey could bring to this team(defense and rebounding), but not that much. We're giving away too much value in that trade.
