    I think this is a reverse role model. A lot of fans feels that Yao needs to model himself after trash talking American athletes, that Yao has been too nice and needs to get more thug like. As I said in my post I don't hold it against Yao, what I find troubling is that everyone thinks its a good thing and a sign of maturity him swearing at and showing up opponents. I think that says a lot more about American sports culture than it does about Yao.

    Well it looks like some people here think that cursing is a way to show your dominance on court. I don't get it. You can dominate in a classy way. Heck cursing even don't earn your respect from the refs. I would support Yao to curse if refs would give him more favorite calls after they hear his cursing. But I don't believe so. Then what's the benefit? Being a classy player does not conflict with being dominant.

    No, I don't think cursing is a way to show your dominance. Cursing occasionaly (not all the time) is a way to response to challenge. When opponents take it to your face, you response with your strong play, and not fear to point your opponent out. That's kind of standing up, and leadership. Again, this is NBA, this is part of the culture there. You wouldn't do it in many other competitions, say, golf.

    Need to make it clear though, I don't want Yao to be a trash talker all the time. And definitely no cursing off the court. I don't believe anybody want that.

    "Yao Ming, he's been spending a lot of time with blacks learning slang and **** talking. If they're not careful, they might lose him."

    Interesting point. How can cursing a good way to respond challenge? You use your play to respond, that's not enough? I think an "and 1 " play is strong enough to respond the challenge. And you think it's too weak? And thus he should curse to behave stronger ? :cool:

    i agree with this comment. getting angry and with some arrogance is a good thing. it lights the aggressiveness and fight in a player. it makes you want to hustle, sprint, juke, drive harder.
    i also think it was an inevitability that he started cussing. i mean everyone on the court is cussing anyway, and where is he learning his english from? the people he's around all the time. it was only a matter time.

    Really? That's interesting. I know in golf every curse causes play $500 (same amount as a 'T' in NBA, :D ). I saw Tiger's frustration many times, never know he also curses.

    A bit off the topic, sorry.

    Yes cursing is terrible. What Yao should do is to invite his opponents over to eat dumplings and to drink tea. Oh wait, he did that already and got posterized 80 times as a result. That same week, 400 Chinese people, ages 12-45, across the country, got beat up and had their lunches stolen.

    Anyways, I seriously don't get why a lot of posters insist that Yao should attempt to maintain a p*ssified demeanor on the court. If anything, behaving like some wimpy momma's boy will only result in Yao getting more abused -not less.

    Ha, that's interesting deduction. wait? wait what? Who told you the followings? (I did not say those, so maybe you got them in your dream? ):
    not cursing = invite his opponents over to eat dumplings and to drink tea;
    not cursing = maintain a p*ssified demeanor on the court;
    not cursing = behaving like some wimpy momma's boy;

    You jump to the conculstion too fast and too easily. It's like either white or black. Wow what a colorful world you live in.

    just respect his opinion.. I agree with him. Why not have Yao hand out his favorite recipes to the opponents b4 each game too along with a brownie care package :eek:

    We share the common opinion here. :p You can agree what he does, I can disagree, but finally it's Yao's call. I have no objection to that.

    Uh memo to genius boy, he already HAS!

    The Miami game in South Beach this year 94-72. Yao goes for 34/14 and Shaq had 15/10, plus Yao wore out the floor in the 4th Qtr when the Rox went off.

    Another time, I think the year was 2003! Lakers vs Rockets, January maybe?Yao got a block on Shaq early and he got the game clinching basket dunking on Shaq! 104-100 OT.

    He facialized and dominated Amare in the 2004-05 season when the Rox demolished the Suns 127-107.

    Tim Duncan? That project needs work. ;)

    ---------------------------------------------------

    Commenting on the thread, it wasnt long ago that people said Yao didnt care and didnt have the mental, much less physical toughness to play in the NBA! Remember that? Only a few years ago.

    Yao has taken a lot of crap from the media and the fans. He probably figured out that sometimes the dignity and pride of a man and the image presented sometimes superceding "taking the high road." To be a man, you got to take a stand and that means you do not allow an opponent to disrespect you. Especially Kaveman. The putz.

    Way to go YAO!!! Calling out the refs for crap non-calls. Making statements with his play and his demeanor. Hey Shaq did and does this so why discriminate? Yao is a man just like Shaq both hungering/hungered for respect.

    The "IT" factor. The champs have it! Magic, Bird, Isaiah, Hakeem, Robinson & Duncan-were though to be soft and not perform in the clutch, yet won championships. Whether you like him or not, Kobe cant be discounted. Wade definitely. Just to name a few.

    In the wings ... Yao, TMac & LeBron are ready to take their place on championship row. They've had legendary championship-like performances BUT ...

    What happens on the court, stays on the court. They arent robots, they're human beings and when the stakes are up'd, you find out who the men are among the boys.

    Every star has their moments. They're human, we're human. Let's move on, shall we?

    In the manner and the context he did it, I see nothing wrong.

    He didnt insult Kaveman just put him in his place. I am Yao and you're ordinary. So what?

    That's the kind of fire this team NEEDS not just from anyone but from their leaders; their superstars.

    When Yao did that, he infused confidence that HE IS THE MAN THAT'S GONNA LEAD US BACK TO THE PROMISED LAND.

    Book it. It may seem inocuous now, but later in the season and toward the playoffs, you'll see Yao's confidence explode and his teammates are gonna be like Piranhas, no freakin mercy! That moment serves as a turning point for Yao not in what he said, but what he did. He came of age on Sunday. I can hardly wait now when TMac and Snyder get back. Would love to see Bad Boy Bobby back soon. He probably got teary when he saw Yao do that. :D
