You're an idiot for thinking Rik was crap... If Rik was in the league right now, he'd average 18 and 10 easily in his prime and be the 3rd or 4th best center in the league. In the east, he would make the allstar team no doubt. Maybe you should go back and watch some tape before judging cuz the dunking dutchman was no slouch.
You need to rewind and watch the shot again...it was against the Pacers, obviously not the game you were watching.
Last time i check, they are named Indiana Pacers.... By now, 8 page, i still cant get the idea why Yao cannot dunk...... or should i say, will not dunk. Its like, turnaround, stretch your hand straight, tip toe, and put the ball in with your palm protecting the ball.
This post has been pretty thoroughly savaged already, but here I have to disagree further. Just from personal experience, I was at that Mavs game a couple seasons back when Yao went for 38 or whatever it was. This was back when the Mavs played defense, mind you, and they were sending absolutely everybody at Yao. It just didn't matter. And as far as being "in position to score" at the end of the game, of course it's easier for a Baron Davis or Tracy McGrady to get "into position" when that means being somewhere behind the 3-point arc. It's harder to get the ball in to Yao at the end of the game because when it does get there, he makes it consistently and the D focuses everything on preventing that. We've seen a ton of huge shots from Yao at the end of close games even when he had to shoot from farther out than one would hope. That three-point play he had against the Blazers was amazing, and it's not his fault TMac screwed up covering Brandon Roy on the other end. My overall feeling on Yao is that he's a real superstar when he's healthy long enough to really get his game together, which takes a while for him. We're still seeing him recover his skills, I think.
it's because the dude is 7'6 and 310+ lbs. he is gassing for air 3 plays into the game and you think he'll dunk? he is got 6 inch vertical and takes a long ass time to gather himself for the dunk. where as, he just have to toss it up for a layup which saves him energy and faster too. he will dunk when he thinks he can get it done. i am sure he'll dunk more once he gets back to shape, but dunking isn't that easy for him when the people guard him are always faster, get off the floor quicker, and higher vertical.
That last play against Indiana where couldn't go up is exactly what would happen at the end of a playoff game if we go to him that way. Now it is up to Yao to review that film and make adjustments because if that was game 7 of a playoff series can you imagine the pain then... people would seriously talk about how weak he is.
So throwing up an 11' high jump ball is a better alternative to dunking when the people who guard him are faster, get off the floor quicker and jump higher?
problem of yao dunking...he CANNOT JUMP HIGH. the guy has a 2-5 inch vertical and gets off the ground very slow, therefore quick athletic guys can block his shots because they get off the ground so quick to block it. (dont be surprised to see lebrons, josh smith, danny ganger, ariza, gerald green type players block his shots) the same concept applies to RON ARTEST...why can't ron artest DUNK!? he is strong/tough as nails but yet he goes and lays it in? because the guy is slow off the ground.
hahaha are you kidding me? he lays it in most of the time trust me. out of all the rockets game so far i can remember him dunking once.
Artest runs around like he is on ice. i don't think his shoes have any friction. i wonder how he doesn't fall much.
How many of those lay ins have been blocked, when he wasn't obviously trying to get a foul call and just throwing it up? There is a time and place for everthing.
at 7ft6 i dont expect yao to dunk like howard or dominate both ends, but I just want him to grab more rebs a game than 1 reb tonight. Even 6ft pgs like chris paul, kidd, or scrubs that play in garbage time can get more reb than a 7ft6 guy hugging down center lane
You must be kidding me! Yao played great tonight. In many cases, he blocked the opponents for the team rebounder. Did you watch the game or just read the stats?
