My only advice is just lower your expectations and be patient. Yao can only get better. People that say Yao sucks will eat their words later and jump on the bandwagon. His progression will be slow due to the style of Rocket's play and urgency of getting to playoffs. He will get schooled, and dunked on, but I will see the day this guy will be feared. He is too tall, too skilled, and smart to not be an impact player in this league. Naysayers, bashers can unite and do whay they do...Yao will have the last laugh.
What disappoints me is his lack of aggression. He was far more aggressive in the World Championship. The NBA does have different rules and the level of speed and physical play is greater here but he didn't let things bother him too much in Indiana. Not being during the preseason and knowing the plays has hurt him but generally people were very impressed with his attitude during the WC. I'm not surprised to see him struggling but he needs to overcome his failure of failing which will make things easier for him. I'm very surprised that his latest weight according to windandsea is 249 lbs. He weighed 296 lbs at the Chicago workout and appears to be slightly strong now as compared to then.
W&S, The people around Yao Ming might've failed your expectations, but it's unfair to suggest that they've also failed his. Frankly, you don't know. Yao Ming has been very, very consistent from day one. He's always emphasized he believes the NBA will be difficult. Ever since this season started, he's said his purpose the first year is just to focus on rebounding and defense... and *not* scoring. You thought he was being overly modest. I did too, at first... but now we know he wasn't being modest. He has a normal development curve, and the only question is if he has the moral/mental strength to get through the disappointments to succeed. *This* type of willingness to suffer pain is what separates those who succeed from those who fail. I agree with the teacher above. Yao Ming might not succeed in the NBA even if he works his ass off, but if he does not continue to believe and work hard, if he gives up the same way that you have, then he will definitely not succed.
Yao Ming just needs time. I agree he's not ready, but very few rookies are. This is his first taste of American basketball and he needs time to adjust to it. The real problem is that the Rockets guards choose to neglect him on offense, which in turn makes it look as if yao's worthless. Let's see him get more than three or four touches a game before we judge him.

I agree with WindandSea. Yao Ming is ready to play more minutes, and can score now (witness last Saturday's moves against Toronto). He's just too nice (unselfish) to demand the ball, unlike Francis and Mobley, who own this team right now. But Francis and Mobley have got to realize they need to pass the ball more and diversify their offense, or there's no way they are going to make the playoffs. I remember reading how Francis said this team is going to be broken up if they don't make the playoffs--they will have had enough chances to get it right after this year. If they don't make the playoffs, they will trade Mobley, as good as he is. Knowing that, Francis will start giving up the ball and passing more, but it will be a painful transition. So I don't want to hear anyone telling me how Yao is not ready, he needs more time, that he's overwhelmed, that he's tired, that he needs to adjust to this country, the NBA lifestyle, the practices, etc., blah blah blah. Quit speaking for Yao. Yao has said himself he's wondering why he's not playing more. He has been a pro for several years, so he knows what the demands are like. And look at Tony Parker last year--an 18-year old French rookie who plays a more physically and mentally demanding position (PG) who did wonderfully last year. That's because Popovich knew he had what it took to adjust rapidly, just like Yao can. Let's quit handling Yao like he's a baby and put him in for 25-30 minutes and let him shoot 10 times a game. Hell, even if he's fouled half the time, you know he'll make 80% of his shots. I'm sick of Rudy handling 'promising' (as he called them at one time) rookies slowly. Before you know it, they end up losing their edge. Look at rookies he has raved about over the years who he gave up on--Oscar Torres, Dan Langhi, soon-to-be-waived Jason Collier. If he had given these guys playing time, they may have done much better. You end up growing stale on the bench, and it can severely affect your psyche. God forbit that happens to Yao.
Even though Francis is shooting phenomenal at 50% FG and averaing 30ppg I think he needs to pass it inside a little more. I think the reason Ming keeps having these bad games is his confidence is so low its non-exsistent. He needs to get involved in the offense and take more shots and get into a rythym so he can make more shots and raise his confidence. I noticed at our game home opener against the Raptors Ming was doing well and getting involved in the offense and it helped him play better all around. I dont think its Rudys fault, I think its Steve and Cuttinos fault if its anybodies for not passing it inside more. The only people I notice that pass it to Yao inside like 3-4 times in 20 minutes is Moochie and Hawkins.
yaomingdude, I can't even begin how much I disagree with you. But I'll try. "So I don't want to hear anyone telling me how Yao is not ready, he needs more time, that he's overwhelmed, that he's tired, that he needs to adjust to this country, the NBA lifestyle, the practices, etc., blah blah blah." Blah blah blah? None of those things are debatable. They are all true. They exist. They affect him. He is not ready, because he simply doesn't know the system/plays yet. He does need more time, because he's getting used to his teammates. He is overwhelmed because he just entered the National Basketball Association as a rookie with a target on his back. Why not be overwhelmed? He is playing against the most overwhelming players in the world. He should be tired, because he's been playing for 2 years with no significant break. World Championships, followed by Asian Games, followed by Preseason, followed by regular season. All in the space of 3 or 4 months. I'm surprised he's still standing on his two feet. He si trying to adjust to a country. More often than not, when you move to a new country, FORGET basketball, it's just difficult to LIVE there because you're used to the old country. Imagine doing it during an 82-game schedule, after being drafted #1, hounded by the media, and already being fatigued. "Yao Ming is ready and can score now" No he's not ready. He can score on some people, sometimes right now. But he's not ready yet. It's not as simple as taking a shot, there's a system, an offense, trust, consistency. There's more to it than you make it sound. It's not Francis that said this team will be broken up if we don't make the playoffs, it was Cato. But this is insignificant, because with or without Ming, this team can and will make the playoffs. The fact that we have Ming is a huge surprise (lottery luck) and is just extra right now. We can afford to bring him along slowly. When he starts producing in 15 minutes, then we know he can do it in extended minutes.
I didn't want to ask this in my previous post, because it's not related, but..... Windandsea, What's this about Ming being 249lbs? It's possible he lost a lot of weight because he's been working so hard, non-stop, all the flights, all the training, all the sudden lifting....But 50lbs is unbelieveable. Is it possible this is a media ploy? I doubt the NBA would list him 50lbs above his real weight would they?
I've been disappointed with his defense and rebounding. When he's down there and someone drives I keep expecting him to rise up and slap shots but people are just going right over him like he's not there. A lot of people felt his offense would take time but his presence in the middle, shot blocking, and rebounding would be there right away but it's clearly not. If we don't start seeing some of that by the all-star break I'm going to be kind of concerned. He's 22 years old, not 19.
Some times, some of you Chinese fans pisses me off. What do you blame NBA for? For setting your expectation too high? NBA drafted Yao Ming No1, pays him money, for his potential. If he can pan out or not, it's up to him. You think Rudy praises Ming just to be cooperative for teh NBA money machine? Think again. And you seriously want to blame on the fanfare surrounding Ming? For every positive rave of Yao Ming, there is another negative bashing of him, it's just you yourself choose it picking up only those fanfares. If you have too high an expectation, or too short the patiance, it's your problem. BTW, the reporter is just joking Yao Ming is 250 (jargon in Chinese culture for Dumb and Dumber), Yao is joking back he's just 249, short of 250. But seriously, why does this guy (reporter) still hanging around training facility all day with Ming? The hoopla should be over, Chinese fans should leave Ming along for a while and let him develop. Ming should only concentrate on him training and his game now. On another note, it looks like Ming is going through extensive weight training almost everyday now before he touches basketball. This can actually in some way affect his play on the court, as he is not used to this kind of systemetic weight traning.
I don't want to excuse fot Yao Ming though I'm Chinese.Yes, Yao Ming's performances were very poor in last 4 games, I aslo very disappointment. Because I come from China,so I kown there are many differences between the NBA and CBA(China Basketball Assosiation). When Yao Ming in Shanghai Sharks, he is the team's centre,if other teammates have no chance, the first thought is to pass the ball to Yao Ming and depend on he to make choices and it aslo make Yao Ming 5 years to be top of the CBA.NBA,is more competition , so the road to became top is more rough. I dare not to say Yao Ming will certain to be the Star in NBA,but I will happy if he do his best to every games and get progress even after his failures. P.S my English is poor ,so I'm sorry there may be have many errors in words and sentenses.
