This is not the place for an affirmative action discussion.. take the politics to the politics room.

You need to get a grip... not everything has to do with race.

Yao wasn't fined because there were more important fish to fry this weekend... also known as the knuckleheads fighting in MSG.

No there's not a conspiracy its called what sells. Does an chinese guy makin turn around jumper after turn around jumper on a crappy eastern conference center sell anything? Nope it doesn't. Does a young african american who can dunk every which way or score absurdly amazing shots sell stuff. Well hell yeah it does young caucassian, african american, asian and hispanic kids look up to african americans for some reason. I.E. The rap culture. That's why the nba is happy with yao simply being a bridge to the chinese market. If he is judged fairly they don't care..

What??? you do agree that having sex has a LOT to do with race, right. And, in my book, sex is everything. So, I was agreeing with you.

btw: so where exactly is Hickland.

It's not because the league's too busy with the fight. How long does it take Stern to read the 5 sentence quote from Yao and say, "Fine him $10,000."

I was hoping Yao would get fined because more media attention needs to be payed to his lack of getting calls.

I'm pretty sure that Shaq is the standard to compare Yao to when talking about physical imposing centers getting pummeled by others in the process of the game. Shaq use to complain all the time and now Yao is finally starting to speak up for himself. But the respect still isn't there for Yao from the Refs, just look at these numbers in the first five years of each players career.

    Shaq:

    81 GP - 721 FTA
    81 GP - 850 FTA
    79 GP - 854 FTA
    54 GP - 511 FTA
    51 GP - 479 FTA

    Yao:

    82 GP - 371 FTA
    82 GP - 446 FTA
    80 GP - 497 FTA
    57 GP - 395 FTA
24 GP - 206 FTA (on average to attempt around 690 FT in 82 GP)

Yao should average between 800-900 FTA a year if he's healthy. This doesn't even take into account the non-shooting fouls he just have called in his favor. He's paid his dues, he is the dominant big man in the league, and he should get the calls.

No formal statement, nothing. In a way, that is a statement.

I dont know think its a conspiracy but I do feel like Yao gets unfair treatment because of being Chinese from the US media and even fans. If there was a black or white guy (7'5" +) that could hoop like Yao....he would be marketed like crazy in the US and everyone in the media would be on his jock. But to be fair, the media is somewhat coming around. Guys that are notorious to hate like Greg Anthony had to see him wreck shop on Shaq in person to come around.

comparing Yao to Shaq's FTs is not entirely correct. There is no such strategy as Hack-a-Yao.

Both Shaq and Yao should have/should get more foul calls. But since Shaq didn't get enough, it's doubtful that Yao will have much better luck.

Right, is that why the NBA went so easy on Carmelo Anthony the other day? Bias in favor of black athletes? Ha ha ha ha ha.

C'mon, man... it's not like Yao doesn't get marketed in the US. He got the VISA Check Card commercial, the GPS commercial, etc. And those started even when he was still developing as a player and adjusting to life in the US(with a translator, no less). This is only the 2nd year in which he's averaged 20 points a game, and his first such year was marred by injury.

There are plenty of other players who had similar production who have had less marketing in the U.S.

Unless you want to throw David Lee and George Karl into the debate, the whole Madison Square Garden melee only involves black athletes.

I am not necessarily agreeing or disagreeing with Hicklander's view, but yours is strawman's argument, Sammy.

I agree. There is no Hack-a-Hakeem either. Hakeem routinely got raped by the refs and opposing team. As Matt Bullard says the only thing free in this league is free throws. Hakeem would say them free throws ain't free at all, they hurt alot, and then he would show his scars.

Yao is gonna end up like Hakeem screwed by the refs for years, until you are just so good that they still can't stop you. You end up winning a championship or two in your 30s, when you should have had 3-4 if it was called as much in your favor as it was for the opposing teams

Yao will never get star calls like Karl Malone or Dirk Nowitzki. Karl could knee you in the groin, elbow your face, have you foul out of the game, and in the hospital at the same time.

Yao is more of a oddity marketing tool. If he scores 15 ppg with 5 rbg and 1 blocked shot hell still make the allstar team and still be valuable to the league. But kobe needs to score 63 in a game to look good or lebron needs to make a nice dunk to be marketable

so, i'm just curious. has anyone, like maybe MattJ or whatever moniker is Jonathan Feigen, thought to contact the national media to remind them of Yao's comments and to point out that he didn't get fined.

I mean, maybe us Houstonians are assuming the rest of the national media even knows those quotes exist. We need to let Stern know Yao said that. Are we sure Stern knows Yao demanded to be fined?

Maybe the readers in the NBA offices read this variation, instead of the one from the Chron.

wow...that's quite a different quote. That could definitely be the reason the media has not picked up on this. LAtimes misquoted Yao!!

    this is Feigen's version:
