    Center it is.

I think the speed of this league has really made it hard to get talented centers that can keep up so I voted for Power Forward. So I definetly agree with Duncan as the person mentioned above. I still lean big, just maybe Center isn't the best anymore.

Center is good but you need one with not as much weaknesses as Yao. Like if it was Shaq prime you definitely should go with Shaq prime.

There arent many true centers in the league now. Duncan/D.Howard switches position from PF to C depending on different situation.

Most dominant teams have dominant big men.

Good point, but could Shaq have won without Kobe and Wade? While Duncan has good players around him he's the true star of the team. How many championships would the Spurs have if you switched Duncan with Shaq? I don't think they would have won all 4 (1999, 2003, 2005, 2007).

Shaq made Penny, he made Kobe, he made Wade. If it wasn't for Shaq, none of them would have any rings (Penny didn't get a ring but he got a lot of nice shoes though). After Shaq left his previous teams, they all collapse badly. Duncan have/had a whole crew of stars and solid role players. Vinny Del Negro, Robert Horry, Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker, David Robinson, etc

Get over yourself. We have the best center in basketball and we still haven't gotten out of the first round. We're going into Portland as underdogs according to most media.

It's not about specific positions, but it is about particular types of players.

Over the last 18 years, unless you have Michael Jordan on your team, you pretty much HAVE to have a star big man who rebounds and plays D. PF or C will do.

    2008 Celtics - Garnett
    2007 Spurs - Duncan
    2006 Heat - Shaq
    2005 Spurs - Duncan
    2004 Pistons - Wallace/Wallace combo
    2003 Spurs - Duncan
    2002 Lakers - Shaq
    2001 Lakers - Shaq
    2000 Lakers - Shaq
    1999 Spurs - Duncan
    1998 Bulls - Jordan
    1997 Bulls - Jordan
    1996 Bulls - Jordan
    1995 Rockets - Olajuwon
    1994 Rockets - Olajuwon
    1993 Bulls - Jordan
    1992 Bulls - Jordan
    1991 Bulls - Jordan

Because of this trend, I find it hard to pick a champ this year. KG is hurt, Duncan isn't 100%, Shaq isn't in the playoffs...Yao and Dwight probably aren't good enough to take their teams to a championship on their own yet. So I guess that leaves the Lakers, but obviously a championship for them would be mostly a result of Kobe Bryant.

Saw this on the lakers forum

Dan Patrick asked Phil Jackson who he would want to start a team with. Jackson said that power players are really the key to the NBA. There are exceptions, like Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant and LeBron James, but he would take Dwight Howard over James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Paul if he was starting a team right now.

    yes,

For a long time the centers or pgs are most important part. But since Dr. J./Bird/MJ, the theory was gone. just build around a franchise player. doesn't matter his position.

I don't think you need that kind of change. Just like Irish Ale, I still like to drink it.

    either a C or a PG

good ones are hard to come by.

2's and 3's are dimes a dozen. 4's could be an exception.

Time has not change. You build around good players regardless of the position.

If you have the best center, then you build around that center.
If you have the best guard, then you build around that guard.
If you have the best power forward, then you build around that power forward.

So far some teams has done the right thing, such as Cavs, Lakers, Rockets, Magic.

The way today's game is going it is definitely the PG... the PG has the first say in what happens on offense and is far too important to risk having a weak link there. Chris Paul is an excellent example - without him the Hornets have by far the weakest roster of the West playoff teams.

Hypothetically, lets say you can build around:
    PG: Chris Paul
    SG: Kobe Bryant
    SF: Lebron James
    PF: (Young) Tim Duncan
    C: (Young) Hakeem Olajuwon

Who would you pick in "today's game?"

I'd still pick the center ;)

This question is not completly fair. You have the best of this year at all the position but one of the best all time at center.

You should ask, if they were young who would you build around?:
    PG: Magic Johnson
    SG: Micheal Jordan
    SF: Larry Bird
    PF: Tim Duncan
    C: Hakeem Olajuwon

But I do have to agree with your answer you have to build around the Center. I believe a great center (or nig man in general) is the key to a championship team.
