Yao is in big trouble right now (for what he said after the game against Spain)

They are comparing Yao to Wang Zhizhi. They blame it all to "americanization." That's a knee jerk reaction. The Chinese officials are used to carefully crafted political statements, not the emotional rant of a star player. That's why they are so shocked by Yao's comments.

The Chinese Officials should just shut their mouth if they want Yao to play for the 2008 Olympic or the Chinese players to play in the NBA. They have no power.

Yao is probably right saying that his teammates gave up too easily. But the way he said it, it may cause more damage than help. Also, what I want to tell him is: Shoot the damn ball! Del Harris bassically said the same thing after the game.

If he doesn't want to shoot the ball, don't blame others. I think he will become more mature after these lessons.

Man if the CNT scores a couple of wins and reach the top 8 then this whole thing will blow over quicker than a napkin in a windstorm.

Though if the CNT loses to New Zealand... Get ready for a circus.

Freedom is bursting at the seems over there. China is one of only 5 communist countries remaining in the world. And the tension is almost unbearable. Let Yao speak his mind.

Dont be too politically sensitive. It's not a stereotyped society as
you thought. And sports is only one of the few areas that the old
system dominates. Check it yourself if you have a chance :D

May be basketball is still not really that popular in China so people don't really care to get the system changed? I hear the business environment there is as capitalistic as you can get.

Hey guys, don't bring any politics in, ok. That's just pathetic.

I don't like what Yao said either. I think Yao had a lot to do with the loss. When your team leader only shot 4/11, grab 7rb and then fouled out. Did he really do his job?

It's ok for Yao to critisize his teammates, but he shouldn't sound like he was the only one who shouldn't be responsible for the loss.

As far as I understand, Yao is so angry not only because CNT performance on the court. He thought some players even didn't practice hard and have any desire for a win. Basically he wants to talk about something called "attitude".

We are not insiders and know little about what is going on in CNT. But I guess there must be something hilarious that leads a man like Yao to lose his cool.

BTW, don't give this kind of reports too much credit. Many of them are simply speculations. I believe Chinese sports officials don't like the comments of Yao after game, but talke about yao in big trouble is somewhat exaggerated.

Seems like everything Yao says is blown way out of proportion or is just plain lost in translation.

I woun't go so far as saying that. There's still quite a bit of communist about China. Yes, the economy is market-driven now, but the politics are still 100% communist.

It's much closer to the Sinagore system than communism.
I doubt any of those officials believe communism.

Another example of someone without a sense of humor.

I was surprised that Yao spoke out, but I'm not surprised that it's getting some play in the Chinese press, considering how "conformist" the "general public" is supposed to be there. I don't think the Chinese people are some monolithic group, but the group, followed by the family, has tended to be honored over the individual there. That is certainly the "line" of the government and the state-controlled media, at any rate. Here, in the States, the "general public" honors the individual and the family before the government, and not in any particular order. Gets pretty confusing, but that's OK... we tend to be a rather confusing people.

Yao will be fine. I just wish he was playing for the US team. We could use him! ;)

Use the third link I provided and you will find many more articles, including my original post.

The bottom line is, I agree with everything that Yao said. However, Yao needs to remember that no Chinese athlete has ever said anything close to what he said after the game against Spain. The Chinese officials are afraid that they might lose tight control over the athletes if they allow Yao to speak up his mind whenever he wants to.

And also even if Yao is one of the most popular athlete in the world, the Chinese officials will make it sure who the boss is.
