straight answers?you will never know how much les alexanders made out of yao's connection in china. it doesnt necessarily have to be the rockets franchise, because whatever you earn off nba you share with all the other teams. but with the connection yao brings to les, hes able to explore much greater opportunities. if im not mistaken, les invested 30mil a while back to a chinese shoe company called anta, heres a quick link of how they been doing http://www.howbuy.com/fund/info/dtl/4035395.htm apparently by the end of 2008 they got over 4200 retail stores in china, has a market value of over 2.1 billion dollars(30/06/2009). and this could only be one of les's many investments. then again, theres absolutely no accurate numbers of how much yao brings to the rockets franchise and les, but its not hard to realise its more than any other nba players, and its really not that close when you put 1.4 billion chinese fans into account.
No because Yao would take his 7 to 10 mins a game instead of demanding he get his way or to not play at all.
even if next season yao be in a suit...he will draw chinese viewers and money for the rockets...no one would a smart business man let yao go.
The only way Yao is in control is if he were commanding a max salary again. Basically if he comes back and has the best season of his career. Otherwise we blow up the team and start from scratch. We're positioning ourselves for the summer of 2012 with every movee we make.
First, Les and Morey know clearly what Yao brings to the rockets. Like someone posted here before Les invested some money (a car factory) in China because of Yao. As for Chinese fan investment, I know many Chinese fans in Houston go to the rockets games due to Yao. I also personally know that a group of the sport leaders in Nanjing, China, came to Houston to watch the Rockets/Lakers playoff game (the game 6), they spent lot of money on the tickets, also other things (huge shopping) to help US economy, which was a big surprise for me because it is very far travel for a NBA game.
....also note Marcus Camby had a significant injury history until later in his career. I was certain the Clippers were making a huge mistake when they took him on, but he has proven to be a reliable player later in this career.
No, you still can sign him a short term with the market price. I do not think the rockets will sign Yao for a max even if he is going to play well next year, which is too risk for a 30 year old player.
laoliang, you see what I meant? We've been thru this all before, throwing the same links at us you always do doesnt make your opinion factually correct. Im just flatout too tired of the subject and too busy to bother going thru this again. Funny thing is...Im a proponent of keeping Yao...I just dont buy the whole "cash cow" way of thinking.
Elvin Hayes-Traded Moses Malone-Traded Ralph Sampson-Traded Hakeem Olajuwon-Traded If those guys can be traded, so can Yao Ming.
Its just part of the business. Yao could be traded if it meant winning for 8 more seasons vs winning 2 more. That is not a knock on Yao, just saying some trades can really hurt just as much as a no trade can.
I'm not quite sure what you need to prove it. "Is Yao a cash cow" follows from "do people buy products because of Yao". It sounds like you want to challenge the basic premise of marketing. Does it work? Who knows. Does Yao specifically make money for the Rockets? Who knows. Obviously the majority of people here and the several business media links above suggest he does - doesn't seem like that far of a leap that companies would invest in the Rockets for the same reason. The very fact people are discussing(or debating) him as a global marketing icon means he has some sway. Your never going to be able to prove it just like you'll never be able to prove Lebron or MJ make money for Nike. The fact is that Houston is more profitable and has secured a number of big corporate sponsors since Yao joined regardless of whether he is the reason for that and in business you normally stick to whats working.
OP...stop wasting your time. This is like your 3rd thread regarding Yao in the past month or so. There are more important things to worry about at this time. Yao shouldn't be one of them. His time will come. Don't go losing too much sleep over it. We got 99 problems....and a center ain't one. Hate it or love it....Yao isn't going anywhere.
For those who thinks Yao's economic value is overrated check this Forbes valuation: http://www.forbes.com/lists/2008/32/nba08_Houston-Rockets_322525.html Team Value: pre-Yao: 255 Mil, last year: 469 Mil. Revenue: pre-Yao: 82 Mil, last year: 156 Mil. Opr. Income: pre-Yao: 7 Mil, last Year: 31 Mil. All these numbers started increase since Yao's arrive. The Rockets was basically a break-even organization before they drafted Yao and China.
Is it wrong to converse about the most important player on Rockets the team ? More important things to worry about ? Like what...we are probably headed to the lottery and are in the midst of trade rumors besides that Yao should be a major discussion. And i'd say our center position is currently up in the air within the next coming year and is a problem. Not sure how you can argue against that. Everything the Rockets are doing right now is in some way related to Yao.
