NO HUMAN fights with their nails. Animals don't have nails, and they don't use them to fight. They can scratch, OK, use them to mark stuff, pick stuff, OK, that's all OK.

Notice that your fingers and toes are the only "points" at which your skin ends. The nail makes endings for your skin. If your nails didn't exist, your bones at the tarsals and carpals would tear out of the encasing we call "dermis".

David Dalati on 790 said that Yao told reporters today he expected to be back at the end of the week.

I've got the solution for the toe issues. Somebody tell JVG it is his fault for running Yao out on all those screens from sideline to sideline. Yao has to hustle out there and then stop real quick. His toe hits the end of his shoe and eventually causes ingrown toenails and inflammations.

Stop running him off all the .... screens Jeff and his toes will be fine!!!
      :D ;)

"Our fingernails are similar to claws or hooves found in other
animals. More generally called “digital appendages”, they are enlarged
keratinized structures (the same stuff that horns are made out of)
that protect the tips of the fingers and toes in most vertebrate
species, or aminals with backbones. Fingernails are broad, and
slightly curved, and mostly cover the top surface of our fingers.

In other species, this structure is slightly different - for example,
crocodiles have a thimble-shaped structure that covers the whole tip
of their digits, whereas hawks and owls have talons, highly recurved
claws specialized for prey capture, and horses and cows have hooves
    that protect their feet.

So, the reason we have fingernails is simply that everyone in our
family tree has some sort of digital appendage that probably served to
protect fingertips in our distant ancestors, and each group has
evolved modifications that best fit their needs for a particular
environment. Fingernails in monkeys, apes and humans always cover only
one side of the fingertip and thus they protect but don’t limit the
motion or sensitivity of our fingertips."

Why does it seem that Yao keeps contadicting everything the organization has said about this "injury"? He had no pain, the shoe is fine and he'll be back in 4-5 days after the nail removal.

I just can't believe Yao's the one blowing smoke here. No matter, people here don't believe him.

to me it seemed like a simple "injury". his toe or toenail got scuffed too much too many times, the nail got loose or torn which may have caused bleeding (i don't know but a torn nail is pretty darn painful to me, but still something that could be played through). the toenail was removed and he's kinda back to where he started.

Yao's going to play. there's no structural issue involved that i know of. although if i remember correctly, his big toe is now slightly smaller than it used to be. but nonetheless, his left big toe or toenail is prone to trauma for whatever reasons, most noticeably under the reign of Gundy. if anything, i'm still more concerned about T-Mac's back and even the tendons in his knees.

I know this is an odd question
    but
What does the Toe Nail do for you?
    is it like an appendex

If you beleive in evolution, the toe nail is a remenant from the past. Hoofed animals have essentially the same toe nail stuff only it's on the bottom on their foot. More recently, animals like tigers have "toe nails" as claws. At this point, the human toe nail doesn't have any functional purpose. But the skin underneith is very soft and it can be painful if you lose the nail.

If you don't beleive in evolution, God gave toe nails to the ladies so they have something to paint and look pretty. God was too lazy to redesign man without toe nails so were stuck with them. :) Another example of how man sacrafices for our ladies. (I'm going to hell.)
