Its is really amazing how one athlete represents his country to the rest of the world like Yao, I don't think there is one athlete from another "significant" country in the world with such a level of commitment and pressure.

Who have seen and suffered the mass murder? you or Chinese?

Don't you think it is strange that you hate Mao while Chinese respect and love Mao?

Don't you ever doubt your knowledge of the "mass murderer" could be wrong?

Don't you feel you like a brainwashed tool when you have those far-fetched hatred planted by your media?

You're right it belongs in the D&D section, I was just commenting on the picture itself and the feelings it evokes. Yao is a good person who loves his country and his people, but he is being used by the Chinese government to portray an inaccurate image.

But Mao is responsible for the deaths of tens of millions of Chinese, that isn't even debatable.

He isn't referring to WWII, but the chinese cultural revolution and the "great leap forward" that led to the deaths of millions of people within China. Although it doesn't belong here, he is right to say that Mao directly or indirectly led to the deaths of millions of his countrymen.

Every country has a past. China has been around for a long time and it's about time they get an olyimpic. Mao is dead and that's that. He is no saint but then again there are worst "villians" out there.

haha cant blame the media on this one. they talk about tibet, dafur and toxic toys but not about Mao

since the poster references the great leap foward it means one of 2 things:

    1) he's taken chinese history in college
    2) is chinese

I'm not sure why you would challenge "mass murderer." most estimates put at least 25 million dead of starvation due to Mao... possibly 30+ million

also not sure why you could possibly find it strange that Chinese "love and respect" Mao. the current leadership would be greatly undermined if they allowed anything to tarnish the image of Mao. it makes total sense that chinese would be taught to ignore the last 15 years of Mao's life, so they cant question the legitimacy of the Communist leadership. makes total sense that only an impartial observers outside china would have the balls to say "wow he's ****ed up."

also not sure why this thread is in GARM since it has 0 to do with Yao's game or the rockets

so I guess that's the reason why he's pissed about it and you aren't?

because neither of you are taught it in school but only 1 of you has access to free information?

Not trying to derail the thread but I don't think its fair calling Mao a mass murderer never less the greatest one, and you can't compare Mao to Hitler.

Hitler was a egotistical maniac who purposely massacred millions and started wars to kill millions more trying to promote his own ideas of having a world with only Blond hair blue eyed Europeans.

Mao had the best of intentions for the Chinese people under harsh times, and did bring a lot of good to China. But because of a combination of flawed ideologies, paranoia of others, lack of support from foreign powers (UN didn't recognize mainland China until the 70s), and natural disasters led to the death of many.

Mao was a great revolutionary and commander, but wasn't the best in terms of running a country during peaceful times, and having a bunch of army generals advising him on social and economical issues didn't help either.

I have been told similar thing by a friend from China. He heard about it from his parents. Yes, the so-called economic reforms were stupid and they way they were put into practice was naive. But there are two other major reason which caused the targedy.

    (1) The natural disasters that you have mentioned.

    (2) China was isolated at that time and no one would trade or give hand to her. China's only 'friend' before that time was Russia so China has been solely depended on Russia for aides and trades for necessities that she didn't have. But the relationship turned sour right right at that time and Russia refused to give any kind of help. China lost her last source of help from the outside world and was completely isolated when the catastrophy came.

Disclaimer: I heard this from a friend who said his parents told him about this.

That is correct, Stalin wanted China to stay weak so it would be under his influence, so while the Soviet Union refused to provide assistance they also blocked mainland China from negotiating for aid from the Western powers.
A little known fact is that Stalin hated Mao, China and Russia didn't reopen diplomatic relations until after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Anyways great to see Yao carrying the touch, I just hope he doesn't have to stand for too long and put too much pressure on his foot.

What I find it strange is that western people really hate Mao. Any anti-China politics must hate Mao. Because of what? because Mao is related to the death of XX million Chinese? That's bull****. When did they care about Chinese? They hate Mao simply because Mao kicked them out of China. Reading some China's history, looking at what is happening in Iraq, you will know how important to get away from those so called impartial observers. yes, there is a price. so what, Chinese love to pay the price for the freedom.

Who caused more death in recent 150 years in China? Who made a peaceful China into a miserable war field for 100 years?

Mao or impartial observers including USA+UK+Japan+Russia+France+German?

Who saved more Chinese life from those ****ing impartial observers, or invaders?
Mao or those ****ing impartial observers?

Who actually corrected what Mao had done wrong?
Chinese people or those impartial observers ranting those lies again and again?
