Yao averages 2 TO in 29.2 minutes. For comparison, Steve averages 3.9 in 41.7 minutes, and Cat 2.1 in 41.9 minutes, and as we all know, they touch the ball a lot more than Yao. Also, many of his turnovers are caused by attempting passes that aren't there, or lack of awareness of double teams, not just lack of strength. This should improve with experience, but on the other hand, we've said that before.
Yao = rookie. That's really all the answer you need. The standard is completely different for rookies and 4 year vets. Yao's problems are those of technique. That's improved through practice and hard-work. Francis' biggest problem, imo, is court vision. I'm not sure that's improved much in 4 years. Mobley's biggest problem is that he'd rather take a terrible shot than make an easy pass at times. That's selfishness, and not something that can be fixed by anything else than an attitude adjustment. The ages are different... and so are the issues.
SF has a lower TO/min cuz he's always shoot first pass second. Mobley has a lot lower TO/min cuz HE DOESN'T PASS.
Francis gets a lot of TOs from other folx FUMBLING the passes. I generally thing our team does not have GOOD hands alot of the time Rocket River
Yeah, sometimes the Yao bias overwhelms me as well. Not to rehash an old game, but remember the Wizards game when someone posted a thread about an interview with Yao where he didn't understand why the team didn't call a timeout on the last play in overtime? Well, if I remember correctly, Yao was the one who rebounded the ball. So why didn't YAO call timeout??? Yesterday vs. the Spurs, when we were concerned about time, after a missed foul shot, the REBOUNDER called timeout. Once in particular, it was Yao who called timeout right when he got his hands on the ball. All the Yao lovers noted that the Rockets should have called timeout, but no one seemed to want to shoulder any of the blame on Yao, who had his hands on the ball in a prime opportunity to call the danged timeout!
Read Dr of Dunk's signature. I have answered this question before. Yao does however get the benefit of the doubt for being a Rookie, however, no one 7'5" should ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever, put the ball on the floor inside of three feet of the basket. ever.
I watched the Rockets/Wizards game with my dad, and it was the first time he got to see Yao play. Although he commended Yao for his good plays, he spent most of the time saying how Yao wasn't hustling enough, or he shouldn't have taken certain shots. The next day he was also telling me how the Chinese media was criticizing Yao for not calling a timeout at the end of the game. I think most Yao-only fans bought too much into the US media's hype and are blinding themselves to Yao's obvious deficiencies. Hey I'm chinese, and the only reason I watch the rockets is because of Yao, but some of you need to take a step back and ask: Maybe Yao didn't get the ball because he wasn't deep enough in the post? Maybe Yao didn't get the ball because he couldn't push the defensive fronting player out far enough? Maybe Mobley shot that 3 because he was wide open? Why should Yao keep shooting after going 1-4, but Francis should stop? Maybe Yao got sat down because he's not hustling on rebounds? Maybe Yao doesn't get 40/min a game because he doesn't have the endurance for it? There's such a thing as constructive criticism you know?
