Look, just because one is Asian doesn't mean they automatically vote for Yao Ming. I am asian and I voted for Shaq last year, but this year, Yao deserves it over him.

Looks like no more ASG starter for Shaq for the rest of his career. Unless he moves back to eastern conference :)

Maybe I'm wrong on this, especially because we're always going to magnify Francis' shortcomings, but statistically, isn't he still like #2 or #3 among all point guards in the West? In that case, is it really that much of a "travesty" (as I read a Mavericks fan post) that Steve won?

I'm trying to look at the arguments objectively. As a basketball fan and not a fan of the Rockets or Yao.

A lot of people gave me a lot of heat for saying Brad Miller deserves to be an all-star more than Yao over a week ago and I'm still sticking with that. Yao's game vs. the Magic was awesome, but he's still so streaky. I think you can argue Yao, Shaq or B. Miller but it's not a clear cut case for any of them. In fact I haven't seen a single analyst/commentator state that Yao should be an all-star. So far I've only seen Shaq and Brad Miller.

because of yao ming and steve francis (also v g)the rockets are watched alot more then previous years.making them a very pouplar team..........iam not sure if alot of people listen to rap on this board but its atleast 5 or 6 rappers (jay z)being one of them with mentions of the rockets name in there song.

I travel alot and I have ran into alot of people that would love to come to a rockets game because of steve and yao (and a few others)because at the allstar game all eyes are on them and........... if you have a good game like steve francis did last year ....that could boost your popularity up really fast....and make others want to follow your team because of certin allstars that they saw on your team.

so be happy that we have 2 allstars on our team going back to the allstar game and one in the threepoint shoot out.

CASSELL deserves to be starting instead of Steve.
Sam has DESTROYED every guard in the league this year. I am a Rockets fan, so I know Steve doesn't deserve to go. Sam has brought the Rockets 2 championships and has been destroying the league. He deserves to start!

I'd rather have Vernon Maxwell as our point guard, at least he didn't turn the ball over everytime.

i'not saying that miller deserves it more then yao (i voted for yao) but miller has p[layed great. last year i thought miller didn't deserve to be in the all star game. but this year i believe he does. altough miller has more rebounds and assists then Yao. i think Yao should start.but it is that stupid to say that miller deserves it. I think steve didn't play good enough to be a starter this year. i think Nash or cassel should start. but like alot of people has sayd it is the all star game. the most popular players start, not the best

Yes, but you figure out their years in the league...if you mean rings. If you mean wins...I don't know how many wins Shaq was a part of this season.

And you forgot how Yao's present changing the defence.

Trade Miller to Houston, I don't think he will done anywhere near what Yao has done for the Rockets.

There's only one problem. This season the Kings have a 721 winning percentage. Last season the Kings (playing like 20 games without Webber AND 82 games without Miller), after going through the late season (in which everybody plays harder cuz they wanna make the playoffs) played to a 720 record for the whole season. As I said, if you think Brad Miller IS the reason the Kings are top 3 in the league then he definitely deserves to start.

To give credit where is due while telling the truth like it is, Brad Miller is an above average player 2 lvls above a scrub, playing on a GREAT offensive team and playing some great ball. Nevertheless, he helps out the team FAR LESS than the team helps him.

Well, if you look at both Yao's & Francis' playing stats, then no, they should not be starting for the West. If you've seen them play night in and night out, then NO!, they should not be starting especially Mr. "Franchise" (I confess, I voted for Sam I Am aka Peanut). However, the all-star voting is a popularity contest first and foremost and both of these guys are very popular amongst the citizenry so there you go.

Now before the Yao/Stevie flame throwing wars begin (again) it would be prudent for all to remember that just because they are popular does not mean that they are good or great players - it just means that a lot of NBA fans really really like them.

Just to clear things up for anyone.

The NBA All Star Game (and selections) do not indicate the best players during the season. That is what the "NBA All First Team" and "NBA All Second Team" rosters (as voted on by the sports writers) are there for. Those are selected at the END of the season.

The NBA All Star Game starters are not about "who deserves to go", "who had the best season etc" it is about who the FANS want to see. PERIOD. Now, the reserves as chosen by the coaches are a better representation of players that deserve all star recognition.

Enough with this "Player X" doesn't deserve to star etc etc. If the fans voted for that person, they DO deserve to start. End of story!

If anyone has any beefs, hang onto your beefs until the end of the season to see where things stack up when the All First, and Second Team rosters are announced. (Of course there is no GAME and spectical associated with this announcement so people generally dont give it much thought or recognition, but in reality it is important).

Ok, with that said, back to your regularly scheduled program. ;)

Sure the Kings is 31-12. But give the Rockets Peja, Bibby, and Bobby for SF(!) and JJ, the Rockets could have been 36-10 instead of 26-10.

Mr. Miller is never doubled, let alone tripled, and yet Yao is getting at least doubled for nearly each game. The Rockets opponents are focusing on stopping Yao, and the Kings's opponents are focusing on stopping Peja and the guards. Put Yao on the Kings team and you get a heavy favorite for the NBA title for the next 6-8 years.

The bottom line is, which of the 29 NBA teams would build their franchise around Miller over Yao?

Or if we put Yao on the trading block, how many teams around the league will start calling? I bet 28. Not sure about Brad.

Brad is a nice complementary player, but not a franchise player. Plain and simple. Indiana is actually playing better after Brad left. Cannot say the same for Yao and the Rockets.

The selections are the picks of the fans and a popularity contest. But the perception of being an all-star in any sport means you are having a better year than the guys that are not all-stars.

Being all-star also represents recognition for outplaying the guys that aren't on the team. That's why people get into these arguments. Sam Cassell is clearly an all-star but if he isn't selected, there should be an uproar because he's basically receiving no respect.
