What were you saying about bandwagon fans?

    :D

Sorry Manny, you left yourself open for that one.

    ;)

Still in shock. Three years, three first round outs! :(

Yanks shot their wad just to make the post season
    I still say A-Rod is a curse.
Let Clemons go back to the Dallas suburbs
Torre is probably gone (hate to see it end this way)

    But...

They have a buch of great young studs now. And some great new pitchers coming up. So a little tweaking, a new coach and the Yanks will contend again.

    GO YANKEES!

Not to rub salt in anyone's wounds, but there is nothing more entertaining than reading the sports page of the NY tabloids (NY Post and NY Daily News) after the Yankees got bounced last night. Ditto for the day after the Mets meltdown. It's the end of the world!!

Also...there are pictures of Steinbrenner leaving Yankee Stadium after the game in both papers. He looks frail as hell, holding onto his daughter's arm for support. Is he in bad health? What gives?

DALLAS Suburbs? You know he lives in Houston, right? I hope you know something I don't know, because mistaking Houston for Dallas is a hate crime on this BBS. ;)

    mc mark,

I don't know if I would really be considered a bandwagon fan for the Indians, because my 2nd favorite team has always been the one playing the Yankees. :p :D

Agreed on the Yankees young talent - as an avowed Yankees hater, I don't want to see them build their talent from within. I would rather see them throw their money away at the Carl Pavanos and Jason Giambis of the world. :D

And A-Rod failing in the postseason yet again has to make you really wonder if the dude just can't handle the pressure.

    Tex,

Big Stein has been in frail health for the last 2 or 3 years. He really needs to relinquish control. At one point, I read his son-in-law (forgot his name) was going to take over for him and soon but that was scrapped when his son-in-law separated from Steinbrenner's daughter (his wife). Now, it looks like it is up to Big Stein's 2 sons and neither one has the enthusiasm for the Yanks like their old man does. So, Old Man Steinbrenner will probably keep running the Yankees up to the day he dies.

My bad. I just assumed Clemons would live in a loser city like Dallas.

Well, he might as well live in Dallas because Clemens is not only a loser but a gigantic egomaniac. Dude has retired like what 5 times already?

Is Derek Jeter taking any flak for his ****ty series, or is he bulletproof for some reason?

I've heard it mentioned like twice that he batted below .200, but for the most part, he is being lumped in with Posada and Matsui. It is like they can't single any one of them out, but they will lump the 3 of them together and rag on their collective performance.

But yea Captain Intangibles hit into, what was it, 3 or 4 double plays that absolutely killed them.

Wish I could take credit for this but I found this on another site...classic :D

I had hoped to beat your ladies in pinstripes this fall, but apparently they fell to the Indians... how tragic.
But there is something special about October magic
You were right, somewhere the sun is shining and joy abounds no doubt,
Joe Torre is crying in a quiet dugout.
Strange to see another team dancing on the the Yankees Field
With all that talent and hitting they Wield
While Torre updates his resume, and Mattingly prepares to lead,
the boss deteriorates in Florida and shouts out this screed:
"Never again, Never again, the pain is too great!!
197 million is too much for such a fate"
Without a sense of rhyme and reason
devote your energy to the hockey season.
Say good bye to Abreau, Posada, ARod, the rest
Yankees couldn't read the Indians and didn't pass the test
From your mouth comes a sob and your eye one tear
If there's still a team in NYC, wait till next year.
Steinbrenner has lost control of his highly paid pets
I never thought the Yankees could remind me of the Mets
There's no hope for Clemens, his days are done
he can coach high school, or just bask in the sun
If you think the bugs in Cleveland could enslave you
Even Bernie Williams could not have saved you
     :D

Now, I don't know Steinbrenner personally, but what's so wrong with wanting to win a championship every year? I mean, it's one thing to have a crappy team and think you should win it all, but if you have nearly an entire team of all-stars, why shouldn't you be allowed to think that you can win a championship?

I also disagree with your assessment that they had poor pitching - Wang didn't perform in the playoffs but he's been a 19 game winner for the past two years (and if he beat Beckett for their last meeting, he would've arguably been the frontrunner for Cy Young), Pettite was also consistently good and Moose was good for the better half of the year. The reason why they fell into such a deep hole in the beginning was due more to a lack of offense than poor pitching or injuries.

I think Torre has done an overall terrific job for the last seven years even when the Yanks didn't win it all, but lately, he's made a lot of questionable coaching decisions, especially with bullpen management, and even with setting the starting rotation for the ALDS (sure hindsight is 20/20 but Wang shouldn't have started on the road considering his road numbers throughout the season). I do believe Torre needs to go though, not b/c he's a bad coach, but b/c over a prolonged period of time, it's normal for people to settle into a state of inertia, a routine when things stay the same... maybe this team just needs someone with a somewhat different style or demeanor to light that fire in them and inspire them.

Back to the Boss, I used to hate him with a passion when he used to screw over his own team by trading away top prospects for big name busts and conspire with criminals to harm his own players, but the Boss of recent years hasn't been that same despicable egomaniac of the past. If you noticed, his bark has been a lot worse than his bite for the last several years... rumors of Torre and Cashman getting fired have been going around for awhile, but until now (possibly), he's never pulled the trigger.

    silk,

You don't remember when Torre was forced to run out guys like Chase Wright (he of the 4 consecutive home run fame) and Kei Igawa?? I mean there was a reason why they desperately and foolishly threw so much money at prima donna 45 year old Clemens. They had no pitching and a lot of it was due to injuries (Pavano being out again and it seemed like Pettite was hurt too).

And while Wang had a great regular season, he is starting to become the pitching version of A-Rod - great numbers in the regular season and a complete disappearing act in the postseason.

Look, I hate the Yankees a lot but I will admit that their team is in great shape for the future even with guys like Rivera, Posada, Pettite, and Rodriguez (possibly) all leaving. Cashman was finally ballsy enough to let Big Stein be convinced that trading guys away like Hughes, Chamberlain, Kennedy, Cano, Cabrera, etc would be a huge mistake. I do think that whoever succeeds Torre (looks like Mattingly or Joe Girardi) is going to have a tough time. Expectations are so high and really unrealistic (WS Championship or Else!) that it would cause most normal humans to go insane. Torre has handled it well and with aplomb and class. I just don't think anyone else can do that type of a job. I mean before Torre, the average lifespan (for one stint only, not multiple stints) of a Yankees manager under Steinbrenner was probably 2 to 3 seasons and Torre has lasted 4 to 6 times longer than that. But as a Red Sox fan, we want the Yankees to part ways with Torre. It will help us for sure.
