At one point he didn't seem to like the pitcher Abreu.... he got over it, like it seems he has started to get over it with McCormick.
Once Rome shined a spotlight on it, he couldn't continue without looking like a complete ass. The media is shining a light on Diaz also. I would buy letting guys pay their dues and maturing if he didn't trot Julks and Hensley out regularly. He definitely has his favorites for whatever reason.
Yes, when the front office likely demanded he be used more come October and he was flawlessly dominant. Likewise Chaz had to maintain a f**king .900 OPS to get regular starts. If Dusty doesn't like/believe in you, you have to go above and beyond to change his mind. If he likes you, all you have to give him is the slightest good result on occasion and you're golden. The painfully obvious player biases he has is infuriating to watch.
Granted, this is how I remember it. Maybe it was a few games into the postseason that Diaz looked really bad, but I don't recall thinking Gurriel shouldn't start in the postseason. I thought the question was more on LF (or DH) and if Meyers should replace Chas.
Yea, “yOu WoULdNt tHrOw oUt a RoOKiE Qb” um then explain why julks has 291 at bats playing a position manned by McCormick/meyers/dubon/yordan And Diaz has 283 at bats playing a position manned by Maldonado.. Even with injuries to Altuve and yordan, you are saying Julks should get more appearances vs meyers/McCormick than Diaz vs maldy. Not to mention any at bats at all for madris, Kessinger and Hensley… What a crock of BS.
Wrt Rome and Abreu, I missed that. Could you recap or link? Edit: There is a Chandler Rome article from 2020 wrt Abreu, but it's behind a Chronicle pay wall. Is that the article you're referencing?
I should have had an at least before somewhat playable. It was not intended to be limiting of Diaz as somewhat playable, but that other options aren't.
I gotta say this is something I've not noticed, but I've not been looking either. Granted, I tend to notice the mistakes more than the positives in framing.
There doesn’t seem to be a lot of intra-season split data available for this, but I have noticed his strike rate has been trending upwards and his framing runs on Fangraphs has started drifting upwards after bottoming out at around -2.5.
At one point a couple months back, Yainer's framing numbers were close to Maldy's on a per inning basis (-2 something for Diaz and -7 something for Maldy total). Checking now, Yainer's framing numbers on FanGraphs is half Maldy's on a per inning basis (still -2 something for Diaz, but -12 for Maldy).
This says it all. Plus Diaz is a better than avg catcher defensively. IMHO If JV/Framber want to pitch to Maldy fine. But Javier and the rest of the staff needs to get over it and pitch to Diaz. BTW, Framber with his 5.82 era over his last 10 starts which includes a no hitter shouldn't get a say either. If his ERA was 3.50 over the last 10 starts I could see giving Framber some say so. But not if he's going to have a 6.00 era.
The emergence of an excellent hitting catcher is like manna from heaven .... hopefully next season Diaz is the dude and Maldy has retired or accepted the back up role.
