I don't enjoy to much VanHagar, but the way the drums are recorded and sound for the song/single "Right Now" off of For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge is amazing.

I love all the DLR material but never got into the Van Hagar stuff. They lost their edge and went full-on POP once Diamond Dave left the band.

When =VH= first came out (they were discovered by Gene Simmons, btw), they were the personification of cool. There hadn't ever been a frontman like DLR and no one had ever played guitar like Ed at the time. You can laugh at Eruption now, but at the time, it was totally ground-breaking guitar playing.

Kind of sad how the guitar solo is now somehow passe in a lot of today's music.

unless you can play 'Eruption' as spot on as Ed...then noone should be laughing about it. i've been playing guitar a long time and still can't play it the way he plays it. i can only do bits of it. i know plenty of people do have the ability to play it. they can laugh all they want if they think it is outdated and a non-challenge to play. people just listening to it...not sure it matters what they think.

I think we're finally getting somewhere here:

talent and skills does not necessarily equal greatness.

The magic of Van Halen came from a clash of personalities, talent, raw energy and a dash of conflict. Of course, mix this with boos, drugs, youth, sex and rock and roll and it's almost a given that what will come out will be:

    ROCK AND ROLL

    Dude, you are very generous.

I find the DLR material very spotty. Not saying it is DLR's fault. Some of the VanHagar material is also spotty.

It's ALL spotty. Eruption is art. DLR was always a better personality/presence than a singer, not sure I think he was as unique as Ima, but he was definitely cool. They were done before they broke up 12 years ago. Might as well Jump, indeed.

Expect the album to try to capture Van Hagar popularity with DLR swagger... and to suck... minus a few shining moments from Eddie. Shows will be awesome for those that wanna see it. Problem is, the things that they are so good at, we have now seen before... ad infinitum.

Really not trying to be a downer. I like (early) DLR VH. I hope I'm wrong, but will stop short of getting excited about it.

You know... When they rolled through here... geez three years ago, I remember being blown away by how many I mean *great* songs they had in their catalog. (And that doesn't include the Hagar years - not a huge fan myself but they churned out several more big hits with Sammy.) I mean, I always *knew* they had great songs but hearing them altogether, in one place...

So I went through a VH revival only to find - everything beyond their great songs was pure garbage. I shouldn't say everything - I still love DOA, In a Simple Rhyme and Hear About it Later, etc. But there is a ton of just pure album filler (VH1 excpeted) from those guys. Tora, Tora, One Foot Out the Door...

Still, I would stack VH's (either/or eras) top 30 songs against any other American bands' top 30 and I'm not sure there's much of a contest. They were prolifically good songwriters.

I wasn't a fan Of Sammy Hagar Van Halen either, but "Dreams" was the one exception. That song was great and wouldn't have been as good with DLR.

Pretty harsh on the filler comment; I mean when you put an album out every single year, you're bound to miss on some songs. I imagine they didn't take very long to record those things either - I mean they're cracking up in the middle of Bottoms Up, haha.

On the top 30 thing; probably so but it's probably not a blowout with bands like Aerosmith, Cheap Trick, Ramones, and the Beach Boys.

Sammy wasn't the stage act dave was , but he was REAL singer. Dave was kind of a stage act with no musical talent.

Deff, made it entertaining though, don't get me wrong.

I agree 100% its so sad how bad and adulterated the guitar has become.

Throw a bunch of "HIGH" output or active pickups which **** the highs, CUT the mids, drop your strings as low as they can go and go CHUGA CHUGA CHUGA the entire time.

I do like some metal but holy ****. What happened to the talent.

Alexi laiho and some others are exceptions.

    Randy Rhoads

    Van Halen

    Satriani

    SRV

vai ( don't like him too much but RAW TALENT)

    Malmsteen

    George Lynch

    Marty Freidman

    Gilbert

just to name a few solo guitarists not too old except randy, he was the greatest imo.

Theres one thing I can't stand....ITS NOT VAN HAGAR. We get that so many people idolize dave but the dude was flat out talentless when it came to musical element. He was a stage presence. Hes a cool guy but hes no better than sammy banana.

One thing that did suck was Mike leaving.

Wolfie (eddie's fat son) not being mean) is cool to see them as a combo but you gotta bring mike back....its just not the same without him.

wolfie did get all of the basslines down ina year ill give him that.

Early 90s, now tell me sammy isn't a good singer.

And holy **** as wierd as Ed strikes me it amazes me how much of a raw feel he has for the music as he pulls that solo right out of his ass, even though it was a bit out of place that has to be one of my faves.

I want a wolfgang guitar :( or some VH pups :( bad
