I have a tough time including a number 7 pick in a top ten Bust list. (Even if it cost the Rockets 3 1sts  ). At 7, you're not guaranteed a top player -- even if you get all giddy on draft day!

Darco should make the list given the players drafted right after him. It was a good draft, and Detroit has nothing to show for it. But then the pick was acquired for a washed up Otis Thorpe...so not much lost!

Whether he turns out great in the future won't negate this being a bad pick. They only get him for three years (assuming they don't pick up the fourth)...so if he later becomes great, Detroit won't get that benefit -- unless they gamble on him...again...and resign based on potential...again. If he walks after three years, they essentially gave up the second pick and the paycheque that goes with it, and some pretty good court-side seats -- and got not much in return.

Would Kwame be a good pick if he later becomes great?

And Kandi should be on that list -- certainly ahead of any number 8 pick

To be fair with Darko, look who's playing in front him.

But Kelly, wouldn't that make you wrong? ;)

Seriously, championship team or not, even a youngster should earn a few important minutes on a team after he's been picked that high. Sure, there are examples of guys who blossomed after a few lackluster years to start their careers, but those guys are few and far between. I think it's only a matter of time before Darko is also used as trade bait, based upon his (ahem) "still-untapped potential."

Eh draft picks wise I guess you can rate some of these players a bust. But I think any player who can last in the league for 10+ seasons must have some form of production. While you would expect any of your top 10 draft picks to be a franchise player or at the very least one of your key players for production I don't think you can really fault some of the players that were drafted. My definition of a bust would simply be someone who didn't take advantage of the wonderful opportunities to make a career with the natural talented abilities they possess to play basketball at its highest level.

Eddie Griffin would be on that list. Granted Minnesota has given him another shot, but the man has all but ruined his career as a potential all-star. It's the headcases that I think are the busts. Not so much the physically incapable. The GMs made the mistakes in drafting the players at their spots, but it's not really the player's drafted faults. Unless your player is a headcase it all rests on the GM. I also would like to define headcase as someone who has tremendous potential but is too lazy to take it to the max. I personally think you'd have to be a headcase to not want to bring the best out of yourself and your potential. It doesn't just go for basketball. It goes for everyone's lives.

Darko never had a chance being a young player under Larry Brown. Brown doesn't like to play young players. The way Brown talks about Darko, I think Larry hates him. He can't stand Darko's attitude. He doesn't think he is a team player.

No. 7 picks really shouldn't make lottery bust lists except under exceptional circumstances.

Maybe an honorable mention for his headcasedness.

Len Bias, Danny Ferry, Felton Spencer, Shawn Bradley, Sharone Wright, Olowakandi are busts.

Joe Smith, Todd Fuller and Adonal Foyle earn special mention only because they were drafted in lieu of talented high schoolers you may have heard of against the advice of the teams head scout in consecutive years.

    The guy is an ediot:

Joe Lago is an NFL and NBA editor at Yahoo! Sports.

Hmm... I bet you he doesn't know a damn thing about the NBA.

    What a loser.

If you don't have Olowakandi on the list, you dont know basketball.

Is there any draft worse than the 1986 draft in terms of busts and tragedies? I was just looking over the list :

    2) Len Bias
    3) Chris Washburn
    5) Kenny Walker
    6) William Bedford
    7) Roy Tarpley
    9) Brad Sellers
    60) Drazen Petrovic

Hell, Buck Johnson at #20 was one of the best picks in the first round. :) There were a few 2nd round steals like Jeff Hornacek, Mark Price, Dennis Rodman, and Drazen Petrovic. But wow, the top 20 is like a lesson of who not to pick. The first 10 were almost all busts. lol.

I can't believe Shawn Bradley isn't on the list.

He ranks as the worst pick imaginable ever in my mind. I mean, it wasn't even injury or drugs that made him a bust.

Bryant was a number 6 pick.

Antonio Daniels was a 4 pick (followed by Tony Battie, Ron Mercer, Tim Thomas and Adonal Foyle (and Tracy McGrady!)

I think you could argue a (dis)honourable lifetime achievement award for Stu Jackson. But there are more than ten worse top 3 picks then those two.

Well, Daniels has become possibly the best backup point guard in the NBA... but yeah, over Tracy McGrady? What a horrible draft.

I watched a few games when the kid played. He's clearly not ready, look like a high school kid out there among men. He is still young and got the size so we'll see before we called Darko a bust.

Which reminds me, what do you guys think who's the most dissappointed picks ever for a Rockets fan?

Whoever the Rockets picked over Rashard Lewis. I mean, they did it TWICE!!! smh

I swear I was screaming at the TV after they didn't pick him. Rashard had stated he wanted to play for the Rockets.

A little part of me dies everytime he hits a shot against the Rockets. :(

1983 - Rodney McCray over Clyde Drexler
1998 - Bryce Drew, Mirsad Turckan, and Michael Dickerson over Rashard Lewis
