People, talking about giving up Battier for Gortat...not good value for Houston. In the Orlando scenario they are looking to lose Gortat's longer contract (taking on Arenas' long deal) so they are shedding. Like Bima suggest, we help via Jeffries expiring deal. I would make that deal.
Has Gortat improved? Can he be relied upon to play well consistently? If not, then there is no use in making such a move.
when i saw the Yao thread, i mean, all i think about is "NOOOOOOOOOOO" but when i see this, I mean, my mind went blank again. No, even if they send gortat for free, i won't take it.....
My thought about Gortat is that he's one of the best defenders in the game. P&r, weak side defense, 1on1, activity&intensity, intimidation, contests a lot of shots, defensive rebounding... Offensively can do some things since he has a big and athletic body, a good basket IQ and some interesting moves, plus he could develope more his game here in Houston with more minutes. It is very difficult to show anything playing 13-15 minutes a game, but he's not terrible offensively, definitely, I've watched him a lot, in the NBA, in Europe, and with his national team. He knows the game and can pass the ball. He's hidden behind Howard like I said, but he's a very very interesting basketball player, not just an intimidator. For example, better player than Tyson Chandler and Chris Andersen in my opinion. He would cause a tremendous impact on this team. Shane is not tradeable. The Magic would love to get back Courtney Lee. We could put back Chase at his natural position (SG) and he -and we all- would really appreciate it. T-Will would be the backup SF, he's a natural SG but definitely a better SF than Chase defensively. -You have A LOT of Gortat videos on youtube-.
List of unrealistically possibilities: -Ibaka -Gasol -Chandler -Cousins (still for now) -Roy Hibbert -Al Horford -Brook Lopez -JaVale McGee -Joakim Noah Realistically attainable centers out there: -Pryzbilla -Nene -Haywood (no Martin for Dallas) -Varejao -Dalembert -Thabeet -Turiaf -Diop The center position has the less talented pool right now, that's why we have put half the eggs on Yao's basket. I'd gamble on Gortat, he is unproven but intriguing, especially at his price in an eventual Arenas to Orlando deal we could probably get him for roughly one of the exceptions, that wouldn’t be the case with the other centers out there. Now, do you want to get an All NBA Star? Hope for an Orlando implosion after getting Arenas and his albatross contract, killing Orlando's hopes of a championship run and consequently infuriating a certain somebody who demands a trade. We could have D. HOWARD NEXT SUMMER! *The scenario above is just as likely to happen as us getting one of the Ibakas or Gasols that people have been craving.
Go for it. He is a solid center, I can easily see him giving us 10 and 11 with a couple blocks each game.
You lost me when you included Lee. No way. Could we even trade the guy? I hope not, but it's past the 15th. Jeffries, some cash, and a 2nd rounder is more like it. Hell, I'd include Bud.
would you want arenas? i dunno if its just being in washington or what but it looked like he gave up the other night in that close game with the nets, he fouled d harris down 3 with 30 seconds to go, essentially putting the game out of their hands AND fouling himself out. not a smart play, but he did look good in the 5-10 minutes a i saw of him, btw in case yall didnt see that game, they were down big and came back to get within like 2 and then he got hit for a 3 second technical and then fouled out
Acquiring Williams and Gortat is interesting because it essentially makes Hill and Budinger (or Lee) expendable. I tend to think Lee is in the long term plans. Both are backups, both are sought after and both are highlight reels which essentially causes other teams to overate them. There really isnt a point in bringing in a third string wing and big at this point, unless they anticipated another major move. What gets me here is I dont really see how they can pull both Gortat and another mega deal with Bud + Hill + pick + Filler for _________ because there isn't enough filler w/o moving Battier. I suppose they could move Shane, but I just dont see it happening. If they somehow swing Gortat for just a TPE then they are paying a ton in tax dollars this year until Yao expires. I guess it doesnt matter if Yao is being paid via insurance. I don't really understand the "Gortat is overpaid" mindset either. We are paying Yao 32 million dollars for the past two years for 3 total games. The guy makes roughly the same as Miller, Battier, Lowry and Jeffries. He is a relative bargain, with the current premium on bigs, if he plays anywhere close to 20 minutes. Anyway, we will see what happens.
That's good for that kind of money imo. So how many centers in the league actually average that? He's still young too and can play fundamentally sound team defense and boxes out really good. He's also tough as nails.
But you gotta give somethin, Deckard. I also like Courtney, believe me, but they would not accept a Budinger+Jeffries for Gortat trade. I just said Lee because I know how much they wanted him, and how much a lot of Magic fans still miss him. There's no doubt that he's a good player, but I just try to be realistic. You won't find always a T-Will bargain. I also think that Chase is a better player than what he's showing now, and that we can get him back to his former level by sending him again to the SG position. He can be a better defender as SG, and he would be more confortable on the court. Moreover, likely, you want to trade players when they peak, like we did with Carl. This is the opposite situation.
I don't think we should let Hill or Battier go..I much rather have Bud traded before either of those two.
