They are not KILLING the used market, though that will eventually happen...they are actually going to split some of that revenue with EB games.....or GameStop.

I really like this idea a lot.

This is not "killing" the used game market, in my opinion. If I want to go the cheap route, I'd buy it used and then shell out the extra $10. I bet it's still cheaper than buying new.

I'd think this move is fair for suppliers in order to pay the server upkeep.

THEN STOP MAKING GAMES THAT COST SO MUCH ******* MONEY TO MAKE

This is absurd. I won't be buying another EA game. And if the other companies start doing it too, I'll won't buy theirs either.

Someone already explained the fact it doesn't cost any more server money. EA is trying to punish used game retailers, but they're hurting used game purchasers.

I started getting annoyed when they began giving in-game features to those who preordered. I got pissed when they locked out features that were on a disc I freaking owned and tried to sell them to me. (Katamari) Now I'm just done.

I see it as taking advantage of the more disposable genres in the industry. The sports division of EA really has no need to break new ground in the genre just make a new sequel every year, and now they can take a share (or manufacture their own share) out of the very common practice that people have of selling/trading in their outdated copy to reserve brand name 20xx+1.

We only have to endure Madden (a great game) for another year or so, I really hope they can't extend that exclusive rights contract and 2k can get its hat back in the ring.

Whatever dudes, for the next few months after a game is released the used version only costs about 5 dollars less. Why would you not just shell out the extra 5 dollars. Aside from single player games, there is really no point in buying used... IMO at least

Right, because person A who sold their game to person B is still using the server while the used game purchaser is now using it too....OH WAIT

Well at least the 10 dollars could go to keeping up servers past a year...OH WAIT

It won't kill the used game market but it will probably lower the prices Gamestop pays for used EA games by let's say $10. Gamestop will still make their ridiculous margins, EA will get possibly an extra $10 if secondhand buyers want online play, and consumers lose $10 off their resell value. Everybody wins!

For the record, I buy all my games new to support devs. I don't sell my games to Gamestop because that's a major rip off and I like to have a library of games. But this is so anti-consumer, I can't believe people (besides DD since he's an industry man) support this idea.

Nobody yet has given a logical reason EA Sports is doing this other than to pad their wallets.

Even more ridiculous is how DD claims developing games is very costly, yet EA Sports is pioneering this move and all they do is copy/paste the exact same game and change the year.

This is what rubs me the wrong way:

    Garbage.

I'm not a fan of Gamestop, and I don't really buy used games, but this does absolutely nothing for the consumer. The only winner here is EA.

Does EA have anything that rivals Netflix on their server?

I really have no problem with game developers getting a cut of the used market if their resources are being used for free on the secondary market. Seems like used prices would just adjust to the lost benefit of online play but it would hardly kill that market.

Used games are already overpriced and now just add $10 to that....annoying. I understand that they will try to get more money any way they can but hopefully no other companies jump on this bandwagon or used sales will start going down and hurting the actual stores. I heard that bioshock 2 already has the downloadable content on the disc and you just pay to unlock it. They think this stuff is smart but its just going to piss people off more when they see it.

    Those won't work online either.

    ;)

You guys are funny...if you don't like it, don't buy the games....I am sure that won't hurt EA any...

And we have been losing out on tons of $$$$ on the used market for years...I am glad we are finding a way to make it right.

People with no concept of the costs involved in developing a video game should not post about how simple they PERCEIVE it to be.

Madden has over 100 people on it, every year.....and there is cost involved in that....the Madden game costs more than $15 million to make, each iteration.....and if you want a new game, they have to find someway to make money at it.

I know it is upsetting, but honestly, this is just game companies finding a way to be more profitable.......the used games are killing new sales.......which is hurting the industry overall.

If GameStop would share some of those revenues...they make over 85% of their profit from used sales, it would help everyone.

Think about how quickly games come and go from the shelf space at gamestop...you know why? Because they need that shelf space for used products......

So, you get your game on the shelf for about a month then poof ....no more new copies.....

How many times have you gone into the store to buy a game and they go, we do have this used..........and you buy that version.....

You know why? Because they are KILLING on the used product.

Sorry, you guys can cry me a river, but I am on big business side here....if you don't like it....don't play the games......

Overall, we will make more money, and be able to make more products....it is all going online soon anyway....and there will be NO USED GAMES then.

EA should fix their BC2 servers first before asking for more money.

Next thing you know new auto manufacturers are going to get pissed off about their loss of income to the used car market.

They are going to build in a computer chip that once a car is sold the old key will no longer work. Then if you want to buy a used car and drive it on the street you will have to buy a new key from the original manufacturer for $5,000. That should stop people from buying used cars and put all the used car lots out of business. Just what big business wants. Less competition.

We want to sell our product. Then we want a cut if it were to get sold again.

DD your line of thinking on this one is way out of whack.
