It's been nearly 20 years since I worked food stamps, but it seems to me he would be ineligible based upon resources if he has money in the bank, bought a new car, or bought property (other than his home).

the real loophole was that this guy was buying lotto tickets and using the government to front his food bill. he is probably not alone in that.

So you begrudge a man buying a lotto ticket?

What do you see the life of a food Stamp Recipient being?

better than mine. i have to eat on a budget while im in school trying to support my wife and kid. When I get out, I will begrudge anyone saying that i owe more taxes, if i make it rich, to "help" people that should help themselves.

Whatever. A typical foodstamp allotment is like 20 bucks a week. Rich people take advantage of government loopholes all the time, generally for much larger sums of money.

You think Food Stamp Recipients don't eat on a budget?

    Seriously?

I believe its the donut hole coverage he's referring to. He probably doesn't qualify for food stamps despite having to crimp for every penny for his budget (likely on loans or his spouses salary) while a person on food stamps (who may similarly have to budget) gets his food money for free.

Welfare should either be a) food directly given for subsistence or b) a low interest loan and has limits on eligibility duration. Giving people free money just encourages bad spending habits and/or pisses off people who do work hard(er) enough to not be on food stamps.

Are you really defending a wealthy person taking food stamps?

    The wealthy have taken enough!

Even if it came to a point where you didnt have to pay taxes for welfare, the government will just tax you on some other crazy ****.

    ;)

I'm not defending anyone, I'm commenting on why this story leaves any sort of impression on people. It's a non-story that has become a story because it caters to the preconceptions of a lot of people - it confirms beliefs they already had (without providing any insight into how accurate those beliefs are).

    UPDATE

A fool and his money are soon parted.

When I first saw his son on the tlc show(video below), major cringe factor! It was bound to happen. What a mooching, stupid jackass. Acted like he had done something to earn this money. Of course the old man is not bright at all. Why the hell did he tore down his old house and build a new one to replace it? His financial adviser aka his son probably suggested it. This is the one where he should've pulled out. He should've renovate it and lease it out and buy another house.

His son is one smart puppy, letting the whole world know where he keep his collectibles. At a hotel room 240. Under lock and key at all time lol

    The sad results....

$2 million after taxes only translates to an annuity of $25,000/year over a forty year time frame. Furthermore if he took a lump sum it'd be less than that. If there's already something precluding him from working or getting a well paying job, I don't know how angry I am about his collecting food stamps; especially when state government told him he could. I think if a lot of us are going to earn more than that over our working life and get the residual happiness of being productive in a field or role of our choosing, in my case at least better him on food stamps than me.

Yeah. At least I bet he paid all the necessary taxes on those $2mil(or $1mil lump sum) earnings. Probably more that most multinational companies.
