It would definitely be in Denver's best interest to go ahead and trade Melo sooner than later.

I really do not see a chance they get a better offer than what the Rockets would be able to give....

IF somehow we are able to keep Martin and Brooks in this entire scenario, that would be great, but I think playing Martin and Melo would be a nightmare for opposing teams, we would be living at the free throw line.

Imagine Martin, Carmelo, Lowry, and Yao. All very good at drawing fouls, and all 80+% at the line. That would definitely be huge.

I think Denver should move him before the season starts. Although he's under contract for Denver, you don't want to cause drama during the whole season. I think he gets moved before the preseason.

Denver has some leverage but in the end, they don't want to be in the position that Cleveland is in.

I agree. I love Aaron Brooks but he is replaceable, especially since we have Kyle Lowry who could easily step into the starting PG role when we would still have Martin, Scola and Yao to team with Carmelo.

Man, lol, a staring five of Brooks, Martin, Melo, Scola, Yao would be ridiculous in its offensive potential. My only concern would be the ball movement. The good thing I guess is that Yao, Martin and Scola are all guys who do work without the ball in their hands.

    Fixed.

You can insert any team that isn't winning a title into that statement. Whenever a national reporter writes a column that is down on a team that isn't winning, the fans of said team think it is bias at work.

I'm just worried about the defense. I know Lowry plays D but man who can you really count on to get a stop? Melo can play D when he really wants to but he's really not known for it.

Overall, I think you have no choice but to make this move. If you're able to land Melo and not gut your team, you're in a prime position. You'll have a bigger advantage over the Heat when it comes to building a team around a star player.

JR Smith's salary ($6.7M) is larger than the amount of the Ariza trade exception ($6.32M). Can't be done.

ILLEGAL!!!! Especially after some of the deadline deals from this past season (see Ilgauskas, Zydrunas), the league is going to be cracking down on "wink-wink" deals for traded players to be bought out and then re-signed with their original teams. If David Stern gets even the slightest whiff that something like that was going on here, the Rockets would find themselves getting "Timberwolved", as in losing multiple first round picks and getting serious financial sanctions from the league. No way in hell Les and Morey jeopardize the franchise like that.

Regardless, Shane Battier is a valuable enough player that it would be hard to imagine any team that acquires him not wanting to keep him around for next season. Considering that any buyout would likely be for very close to Shane's full ($7.34M) salary, there is much more value to that team in keeping Battier on the roster (and in the locker room) than eating 90% of his salary and then replacing his roster spot with some scrub.

    Gut the team???

At a minimum, even if Houston threw the kitchen sink at Denver to get Melo, the Rockets would still have Carmelo Anthony, Yao Ming, [at least one of Aaron Brooks or Kevin Martin], Luis Scola, Kyle Lowry and Brad Miller.

Given that the Rockets will likely retain additional player assets, how is this team so "gutted" as to not be more competitive in the Western Conference?

We are going to somehow have to Keep Martin and Battier...Here is what needs to be done..

Brooks + Jeffries + Battier (Denver buys out his contract and we resign him)

+ NY 1st round Pick + Our NY Swap Pick + Houstons 1round pick + Money (To offset the money they need to buy out Battier contract)..

Honestly that is the only package I see Denver take without giving up Martin...

    2 Expiring contracts, + 2 1st round Picks + 1st round pick swap + Money

Hell throw in Jordan Hill or Patrick Patterson if you have too..

Remember our 1st round Picks is going to SUCK if we are a good team...

One of Battier, Jeffries or Budinger has to be kept else we will only have one SF.

We really have a chance to hit a home run here. This has been one crazy summer.
