I was actually thinking about that yesterday, I can't see how hey could go through the season with Melo on the team knowing he is gone by the TD and the season is basically one lame duck. Pretty nice to know that by weeks end there might be a resolution either way, really don't want to go through 5 months of Chris Bosh all over again.

Hopefully he's here by open practice to introduce him to the the fans. That'll be great.

I'm laughing at Brian chap and the others who said that DM is not going after Melo.

I had zero doubt that he would go after melo hard.

I think there is no doubt that he's trying to go after Melo.

I understand that some fans here don't like him or like Martin more, but I think it's laughable to think that Melo isn't an upgrade over Martin (on both ends really). The only drawback to the deal is the fact that Martin is far better from the 3 point line than Melo is. That's kind of why I hope Martin goes in the deal and not Brooks because we have Lee that can come in and spread the defense, and maybe Battier if we can convince Denver to take Jeffries as filler instead.

I also find it a little laughable to compare Melo to McGrady for two reasons:

    1) All the big stars in the NBA have ego problems, and they still win titles. Pierce, KG and Allen were all unhappy on their respective teams until they got traded. Shaq has jumped ship thousands of times but he has rings. McGrady demanded a trade out of Orlando because the team sucked at the time, but so did Kobe... the difference is that the Lakers GM got the talent around Kobe to keep him in LA and Orlando didn't (not until a few years later and they had changed GMs).

It would be nice to win titles like the Spurs or Pistons. But that doesn't mean we can't win one like the Heat, Lakers or Celtics if we trade for Melo. I think when given an opportunity to add talent to the team you don't turn it down.

    2) From a success point of view, it's easy to compare Melo to McGrady. They both don't have titles and aren't known for playoff success really. But what has Martin won? If we're questioning Melo's ability to win we might as well question Martin's. And I'm not saying Martin can't win, I'm saying that any argument you apply to Melo in that regard can be used on Martin. I think both could win if put in the right scenario (although because of Melo's talent I'd say it's easier with him).

Very good post. Hard to argue with anything you say there. Because it's basketball, it's hard to take personality out of the equation. You can never succeed playing one-on-five... each player relies on the other 4 guys. There's no doubt in a lot of our minds that Kevin Martin is the better dude, and we speculate better teammate... but both points are arguable. What is pretty definite is their talent level. Melo is simply a more talented player.

I think "fit" is the operative word in this discussion, which is why I'm glad you brought up perimiter shooting. The one reason I think outside shooting somewhat negated though, is the fact that we'll be limiting Yao. This isn't your big brother's Rockets team. We proved last year we can thrive in a pick and pop, run and gun style offense. Melo has a fantastic mid-range game and even if we lose Martin, we can succeed from 3 with Battier, Brooks, Lee, etc.

But boy, Martin is great, too. He's not a "volumn" scorer. He scores his points with a minimum of posessions. He doesn't have to dominate the ball to be successful. He's very good from distance, and also has an excellent mid-range game... lightning quick, fits both a low post style and a pick & roll offense... I could go on. Added to it is the fact that he seems like good guy, good teammate (remember him just gushing to the press about AB last year?), and a hard worker that cares about fitting in.

If it isn't obvious, I've become almost ambivalent about the situation. I can argue it both ways. I love our team, as constructed. I love the idea of adding Melo to Scola, Yao, and Brooks. Even if you're not optimistic about Yao, we already have 3 times the frontcourt size we did last year... and if Yao's done, we're not in a "Carlos Lee" situation. He's no albatross. He sucks, we can just let him walk after this year.

To me it looks like our team is in an enviable situation. The rest of the league is damned if we do, and damned if we don't.

Why would there be any hesitation? Yao is injury prone, fairly old, easily neutralized, and due to all of that, outrageously overpaid. $17 million for a 24 mpg player? Forget it! Melo gives us a new centerpiece to build upon, allowing us to skip rebuilding.

That would be a disgustingly bad trade.

You give up Yao, Cbud AND a valuable pick for Melo?

Unless we get back Nene, I would not trade Yao in any Melo trade.
