If we swap the picks in 2011 and 2012 that's only if the Knicks pick is lower then ours correct?

Ok now we know why the Jennings/2009 Draft got botched and someone hasn't learned a lesson.

The Knicks could pay a steep price in young talent, but unloading Jared Jeffries' 2010-11 cap hit in a deal for Tracy McGrady would enable Donnie Walsh to make a run at two premiere free agents this summer. (Jan. 24, 2010)

GREENBURGH, N.Y. - Though Donnie Walsh downplayed reports of recent conversations he's had with the Rockets about acquiring Tracy McGrady, it is believed that the Knicks' president is pushing a scenario that would include Jared Jeffries to clear $6.8 million off the salary cap in 2010, especially if the Rockets continue to demand that a young asset such as rookie Jordan Hill be involved in any deal.

One trade possibility promoted by Yahoo! Sports last night involved McGrady, who is in the final year of his contract, coming to the Knicks along with Joey Dorsey and Brian Cook for Jeffries, Hill and Al Harrington or Larry Hughes. The Knicks also would have to give up an unprotected first-round pick in 2012.

This report, according to a source with knowledge of the situation, makes up loose parameters of at least one deal Walsh has discussed with the Rockets. Though it would be a precarious mortgage of the future in giving up Hill, the team's 2009 lottery pick, and at least one future unprotected first-rounder, the deal would open more than $9 million in cap space for the summer foray into free agency.

As a result, the Knicks could have enough cap space to make two max contract offers to high-end free agents such as LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, who have talked about teaming up and who put on a heck of a show in Sunday's All-Star Game in Dallas. The Knicks also could eye tandems such as Joe Johnson and Chris Bosh, among other possibilities.

"If this trade happens," one NBA source said, "Donnie Walsh should be Executive of the Year."

It appears Walsh will be very busy before the deadline. On another front, the Celtics still are believed to have great interest in acquiring Nate Robinson.

Nothing is imminent with the McGrady situation, mainly because the Knicks - who are owned by Cablevision, which also owns Newsday - very well could be negotiating against themselves. If a trade happens, it likely won't transpire until right before Thursday's 3 p.m. deadline, and it will be up to Rockets general manager Daryl Morey to pull the trigger. He still might be more inclined to keep McGrady on the payroll the rest of the season.

Apparently, McGrady is anticipating a future in New York. According to a Houston TV station citing sources close to the exiled Rocket, he expects something will be done with the Knicks by "midweek."

Walsh said after practice yesterday, "I'm not going to get into any discussions about trades. There's always a lot of conversations. No sense getting into it. I read things that people write, and some of it I've never seen before or heard before, so it makes no sense getting into it. If something happens, we'll tell you.''

Walsh hasn't seen McGrady himself, but a Knicks representative has watched him work out recently. The team might request a follow-up to ensure he is ready to step into an NBA season that, with 31 games to go, is slipping away from the 19-32 Knicks.

    1.) So?

2.) So it attracts selfish players. Great recipe for victory.

3.) It won't always be that way

4.) It's never that simple. Miami has Wade, who is one of the few true superstars in the game, and they're clinging to a 7-seed if the season ended today. A Bosh led 08/09 Toronto team missed the playoffs in the East by 10 games.

A no-defense-playing, bad-shot-chucking ball hog like Harrington is pretty much the only player in the deal that is trash, if he is indeed coming to us.

NY has 19 wins so far! They have gone 2-8 in the last 10 games. The Knicks have go to on a 23-8 run to get a 0.500 record and get the 8th seed. Do you really believe the Knicks can avoid losing 8 or more games for the rest of the season?

Knicks fans are wearing rose-colored glasses.

Exactly a Wade team with nobody else on it is the 7th seed.

That proves my point right there.

The Knicks will at minimum be comparable to the Heat, but could easily be MUCH better.

I think they will probably be a 45-50 win team next year.

At least a few posters here read carefully enough and noted that the article said a deal was "not imminent". So don't hold your breath -- especially if you're expecting some third team involvement to make this a "clean" deal for the missing piece so many think is lacking.

DM and Les accepted Cook's contract to get Lowry. Don't be deceived. The Rockets are still in the driver's seat. No deal being imminent most likely means the Rockets aren't desperate and they are willing to let this get closer to the deadline to get the most they think is feasible. That doesn't always mean the most desirable.

Patience is the name of the game. DM has it and has Les' trust in this regard. Too many fans here post "ideas" or things they'd "get done" if they were in charge. Naive. So far DM seems to be the thorough type. I doubt if any stones have been left unturned.

Whatever happens and when, it will be done with getting the best available deal at this particular instant, AND with the long-term interests of the team in mind... and that may still mean no deal in the end.

I'm not really concerned about this season. I'm just pointing out that I think they can easily make the playoffs the next 2 years, which is when we would have their picks.

We don't need to see lottery picks from them. We would be getting extra picks for a expiring contract. You aren't losing. It may not be as much as one would like to get, but you aren't taking a loss either way. At the worst you take a shot on a lottery talent big with size (lord knows we have been trying to get a PF prospect with size) and get another draft pick. Shoot me....

And if they get a star lesser than Wade (ie, everyone else not named Lebron)?

The East will not always be this bad.

And if they win 45-50 games, that probably nets you a pick in the 17-22 range. That's still pretty useful.

I Will keep Scola over Harrington anytime, more efficient score, better rebounder, better teammate(no Selfish), Better IQ and a winner.

But Harrington I think can play some SF and Center so he can definitively helps Houston.

Hill a project, maybe can help us a little.

But Im pretty sure we got another deal coming with all those Bigs.

I think Morey wants Jefferies but is making everybody else think that he doesnt so he can have more leverage to get more talent out of the Knicks and first round picks. With Jefferies, Yao, Brooks, Landry and Battier all coming off the books after next season, that gives us about $35mil to dispurse along with what we have left over from Harrington expiring after this year and signing Lowry to a new deal ( about $6m left over). We can sign Brooks and Landry who are going to require $8-10mil each and pay Yao accordingly to how well he performs next year which I HIGHLY doubt will be max contract worthy. There is also the other option and making trades at the end of this year to get us an allstar player in return for expiring players. If the Knicks deal really does go down then I would like to see us trade Scola, Cook and the Knicks 2nd rd pick this year to Chicago for Salmons and the Bulls 1st round pick for this year. This would give us an extra $6.5m in expiring at the end of next season which would bring the total to about $41mil coming off the books the summer of 2011 and add that to the $6m that we have left from Harringtons contract. Thats $47m to spend on who we want to keep and if we are still under the cap then we can sign a max player. We have lots of options with this New York deal. I like it!!

Whats the chances of trading Landry for some quality players and prospects? I think Landry's value is at a very high point right now. The team really needs a shooting guard and we could get really quality return by trading Landry.
Scola is already 31, but his skill set does not require much athleticism. Resigning him would not cost a lot. We could sign him for 3 years. Landry might ask for more money and longer term, somewhere around 5yr 37 to 40 million.
