My guess is Morey wanted to have $5 million of cap room after that trade so he could still take Richard Hamilton's contract from the Bulls and get a first round pick out of them. At the end it didnt work out as Chicago decided to just pay the luxury tax.
I didn't understand why Douglas was in that trade either. I know Douglas would be gone anyway next season due to his contract but at least he could give us help when we are pushing for the playoffs. I would rather we have kept Douglas and that trade was only involved T-Rob and Honeycutt. We definitively don't need Garcia since we have Anderson who is decent and hasn't got enough minutes yet. Is the reason Douglas was in that trade soley for salary matchup purpose and SAC simply wanted to dump Garcia and Honeycutt in that T-Rob trade? Otherwise how do you explain Morey wants to sign another backup PG now (seems very likely AB)? My understanding is to not only free up the PF position to give D-Mo and TJones playing time and but also give us a roster spot to sign a backup PG since Douglas was gone. If by your statement, you meant Morris is worth a first round pick, what if the Suns didn't think so? It's not that they were desperate to get our Morris, maybe a 2nd round pick was the best Morey could get at that time if he wanted to just get rid of Morris.
Morris is league average player with inconsistent play. Usually you can't get nice pick for that kind of player. Early second round pick is about the same value as first rounder in the early 20's, and generally more valuable than very late first round pick. It's better than the heavily protected first round pick we got last year from the lakers if you consider the time value.
The second rounder from Phoenix will be better than a first rounder from a good team like the Heat or Thunder. Morey values picks in the 30-40 range more than say 23-30 due to contrct stipulations. Maybe Morey was offered a first-rounder but wanted the Suns second instead. Didn't Stein say Morey was weighing two offers?
Good point. But a first rounder from one of the worst record team (!) the Suns would sure be more valuable? No? I was also wondering if Morey prefers to get a 2nd rounder in order to free up even more cap space (Morris next year salary would be 2 mills) to put us in the best position to sign the next superstar next summer.
I think they really value those early 2nd round picks, and Morris could have been benched the rest of the year, thus driving down his value, so better to trade him now since they wanted to play DMo anyway. At least that's what the guys on 790 were guessing and it makes decent sense.
Apologies if someone already pointed this out in one of the 600+ posts so far, but if AB joins the Rockets and Goran Dragic already is back with the Suns, both players will have come full circle. Trouble is, I wish we still had Dragic.
1) He wanted to open a roster spot. Had we kept Douglas or Morris, we would have. 2) Early 2nd rounders are non guaranteed, giving us more future flexibility than a late 1st would have. Cheaper to sign as well. 3) Morey already (related to 1) was looking to sign Ohlbrecht knowing our need at the 5. 4) Honeycutt has more upside than Douglas? 5) Dmo needed to play. 6) Asset accumulation in case he needs it for a s/t over the summer. Picks more valuable than players mostly.
sure but a first rounder from a crap team is incredibly valuable, and yes, that a 2nd rounder doesn't count against your cap unsigned and that the level of player is still in a similar hit and miss category is why they are more valuable.
Of course a first rounder from Phoenix would be better than a second rounder. The fact is, Phoenix's first rounder might be one of the best assets in the league right now as far as picks are concerned. I mean Pho is slotted to get the 7th pick. To put that in perspective the Clips were slotted to get the 8th pick before trading to Cleveland for Mo Williams. That pick later turned into Kyrie Irving. Morris just didn't have first round value in my opinion and certaintly didn't have lottery value. He was barely a lotto pick at 14 when we got him.
hmm... how about SAC just wanted douglas to be included? And since we have beverly we can afford to lose a backup pg.
Brooks would be injury insurance and nothing more. He would have his work cut out to take ANY time from BEVERLY. The signing has nothing to do with Lin. If we are looking for the 15th man to address our team needs, we got major issues. If he becomes a malcontent on the bench, this will be his last stint in the NBA. The guy just got CUT by the freaking Kings. For as terrible a fit as Lin is supposed to be next to Harden, we currently run a top 5 offense in the league. Defensively the two players aren't even comparable. Lin is so far and away a better player than Brooks that "fit" is irrelevant. Especially when our offensive is a non-issue. We do have options in the front court. Behind DMo we have our most effective lineup in smallball, we have Trob, TJones, Royce White's corpse. Those may not be the greatest options, or even good options, but at least options. Behind Beverly, we have noone. Remember, we are talking about the 15th man here. If you are looking for a difference maker, or even someone who will be playing much at all outside of injury, you won't find him. Or at least you shouldn't at this point if this team is to make any noise.
If he can transform himself into a spot-up shooter who occasionally runs the floor and initiatest the offense - sure. Can he do this? I don't know, but his other attributes (terrible finisher, bad at drawing fouls, not a great passer, and a shot-clock time waster) are diametrically opposed to what the curretn group of Rockets want to do.
Well ... yeah. Lack of defense without Asik on the floor is a MAJOR issue. I realize we're not going to find a Marcus Camby every season, but not having a single other rim protector on the roster is a concern for me. If not more rim protection, at least someone who is solid on the perimeter defensively or can bring some veteran leadership to the team.
This... Brooks would be nothing more than a spot up shooter on this team. If he can hit 40% of his 3's and keep his mouth shut, he can find a niche on this team. Under no circumstances should he drive to the basket.
I get that this team has issues. My point is, those aren't going to be solved by your 15th man. That is for injury insurance only. We got Camby by trade. We are getting our 15th man off the waiver wire.
1. Because Morey wanted Garcia's contact. 2. Because Sacramento wanted to dump AB's contract a part of the trade, which requires a substantial buyout and Morey figured how to take that obligation from Sacramento and turn it into a favorable tradable contract and still have $2 million left over to pay other teams to take Brooks and Honeycutt and Garcia for nothing if the trade we are looking for doesn't materialize or does materialize. We needed Morris roster spot for these deals and the high second rounder could come into play as another trade asset or to replace one of the guys we trade if a big trade materializes.
