Brooks could shoot well, was extremely fast and quick so could score in transition like crazy, was a pretty good finisher from what I remember. Defense is a bit of a liability but it's not like Lin is that much better at defense. He may not get that many assists, but he would fit well in with Harden. I liked Aaron a lot back a few years ago, and really wanted the Rockets to sign him over the off-season. I feel like he is talented to at least backup Lin, but something tells me McHale will be stubborn and continue to give Beverly minutes over AB.
As noted, not a better penetrator. Lin is terrible at scoring points, Brooks is better, so saying finishing and drawing fouls doesn't really make sense. I don't even know what better passer means. Are you talking about taking care of the ball, less turnovers, more assists, more hockey assists?
I thought AB is not a spot up shooter, and he also needs the ball in hand to be effective. I don't know how we are going to use him - Beverly looks solid although he's not good at play making. But then again, AB was never good at play making either. Maybe it's time to stagger playing time for Harden and Lin?
I agree, this makes me question WHY Morey is picking up Brooks when defense is our biggest need. But I like Brooks as a player, so I'm not going to waste time complaining before I see him in action.
We need to play defense, so the only way to get better as a team is to get guys known for their defense. The team needs nothing, not one thing else, but more defense. You guys are rich.
I haven't seen AB play after he left Rockets, and I don't know how many of you have, especially those who praised every single aspect of his offensive games. He was a pretty good shooting guard in PG body. I was in the "start Lowry" camp. I can't believe after some bad years, all of the sudden, he's become a great playing making PG. But Morey must have known what he's doing, although I thought we need size, defense, and maybe a backup for Harden. Is AB the answer?
I watched a few of Brooks's games in Phoenix and a few of the games where he started in Sacramento. I don't think he's ever looked the way he did prior to the ankle injury. He just doesn't seem as quick, which was a huge part of his success. The jumpshot is still there, though.
Thanks for the update. So maybe he's brought in for spot up shooting, but I don't remember that as his real strength. He was actually pretty good at penetration and in rhythm dribbling pull up jumpers. We will see. Hopefully it works out. After all, he's not going to cost us much.
If he loses his quickness, there's not much he's going to be able to do for this team other than spot-up shooting. Most of his game was predicated on being able to turn on the jets in transition and move around like a waterbug in the halfcourt to free himself for jumpers. If his speed is still there, the Rockets are just going to try to run people into submission with wave after wave of units with Lin, Beverley, and Brooks.
Interesting. Aaron Brooks 2009-2010 48% at the rim. 2010-2011 57% at the rim 2012-2013 62% at the rim. So the year where he was beasting he was actually a pretty bad finisher at the rim. After the ankle injury he is actually finishing better at the rim. Lin 2012-2013 61% at the rim. He is finishing better than Lin right now albeit in limited minutes. Jumpshot isn't even close. Lin is at a dismal 32% while brooks is at 40%.
No, those numbers are deceptive, look up the attempts. Brooks is the same player as he was. That's the problem, he didn't add to or improve his game, at least significantly. I would say his playmaking is better, the quickness is still there, but so are his weaknesses. People bring up the Ginobili induced injury as his downfal but all that did was bump down his minutes/role which inflated his numbers.
