I agree. The Hawks have invested a boatload of money into JJ, Horford, Josh Smith and Marvin Williams. This basically guarantees they can't take the step to the next level because they can't afford to do anything. JJ and Marvin Williams were the most idiotic contracts they offered. That squad needs a spark. All of these guys are good secondary or tertiary player. About all they can do is make the playoffs and lose in the 1st round (2nd round if they are lucky).
Great description of a generic Atlanta Hawks player, which is why they will never contend. They are locked into perpetual mediocity (or slightly better).
I think the Rockets not picking up an option is a policy thing, the same way they won't give out trade kickers. A lot of players on the team have options. If we pick up Brooks' the other players are gonna want their own contracts extended too. You could end up with a steal, but from prior evidence most teams who decided a player's value on their own ended up overpaying. Examples for these are Rudy Gay, Joe Johnson, Kirk Heinrich, Anderson Varejao among others.
That's understandable from a policy stand point...but that doesn't mean we have to be a fan of the policy.
Don't forget Gilbert Arenas and Rip while you're at it. Bottom line is that if you use extensions carelessly, you're more then likely to regret it, unless you're doing it with really someone who is pretty much an All-Star. Don't have a problem with our policy at all.
they would be stupid to let him walk....they should've let Marvin Willimas walk...He needs to flourish on another team....ala Rockets
Im honestly drooling over such trade (serisously) and may easily be what Morey has up his sleeve with all this waiting on the Dampier addition! http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=22lcg79
