Haha! They should have had a show with The Real McKenzies, Nomeansno, and DOA playing, all of them legends of punk from BC.
These are some of my favorite Canadian bands at the moment: Born Ruffians, Wolf Parade, Caribou, Plants and Animals, Junior Boys, Arcade Fire, BSS, Great Lake Swimmers, Most Serene Republic, No Kids (from Vancouver), Sunset Rubdown, Handsome Furs, Islands.. Are any of these groups playing at all? I read awhile back something about how alot of bands didn't agree to the legal rules set forth by the Vancouver Olympic Committee in regards to not being able to criticize or talk negatively about the games, so thus they aren't playing.
The Toronto bands you've listed are Born Ruffians, BSS, Great Lake Swimmers, and Most Serene Republic, and two of them, BSS and GLS, are playing the Olympics. I don't think any of the other non-Toronto bands you listed are playing. There has been some controversy about the contract, but later reports have said that it’s actually a fairly standard contract for a corporate gig. I know for sure that the New Pornographers weren’t asked to play, and I don’t know of any band that turned down an invitation, and you’d think that if they wanted to make a political statement they would make it public that they turned down an invitation. DOA was going to make some kind of public protest but they called it off as well.
The fact that noone even bothered to mention the band Rush says alot to me. They have been proudly representing Canada in music for 35+ years. But, by all means, let's pass them over completely in all this talk. Carry on.
They got it! What I don't understand though how Colas the French skier finished in 6th. It looked like he had a great run almost as good as Bilodeau who won it.
his last jump. They said he didn't complete the grab so they took points. I thought he at least dissevered Bronze.
It might have but I think Bilodeau won it outright. What I'm wondering is why Colas finished so low. Looking at the scoring breakdown he finished much lower than the two top finishers in turns and aerials but it looked he skied pretty cleanly and while he missed the grab given his speed score it looked like he was going to be in the top three.
Yes! Alexandre Bilodeau! This is our third Olympics and this is the first time a Canadian has won a gold on Canadian soil. I'm not sure why the French skier finished 6th either, but on the Canadian telecast they showed a mistake he made on his second jump. He was supposed to bend down and grab the side of one of his skis, but he didn't make it down far enough before he had to pull out and he didn't even touch his ski. They were saying even before his score came up that that should be a big enough deduction to ensure that Bilodeau won, but I was surprised to see him drop to 6th. As an interesting side note, Dale Begg-Smith, the guy who came in second for Australia, is actually a Canadian who was born and raised in Vancouver. He's a mysterious character and I wonder if DaDa knows anything about him. He used to ski for team Canada but had a conflict with the coaches relating to his internet business, which has apparently since made him a millionaire, and he quit the team and moved to Australia. There is some suggestion that his business is selling malware. http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2006/03/03/1141191842651.html
Watching the pairs figure skating. Do they actively try to make the guy's outfit as gay as possible? Does that earn extra points with the judges?
I'm not just going by own opinion but what Johnny Mosely was saying. According to his commentary it sounded like that Colas might have won it with only the missed grab and even then he didn't seem to think it was that costly of a mistake.
Like I said, I have no idea. You could be right. I was just throwing out the possibility that the judges saw something that you and others didn't. Maybe it's a conspiracy. Where's ToyCen?
I was reading about Dale Begg-Smith and he is certainly an interesting character. He started his company when he was 15 with his older brother who was also a competitive skier for Team Canada. Both bolted for Australia. It sounds like the parting was very bitter and Dale Begg-Smith won't even talk to Canadian media. Also his wealth means he doesn't need to have a sponsorship and hasn't tried to capitalize on his mogul success to make more money but he still trains and lives with the Australian ski team during training.
