How exactly is curling an Olympic sport? Grannies could do that. Might as well add poker for the London olympics.
We finished 7th in Turin and the world didn't end, and that was real Olympic hockey. I was more unhappy about that than I will be if we don't do well this year.
I'm glad you're taking this in stride from what I heard of the lead up to this game I would be putting all of Canada on suicide watch after the game.
wow. you guys don't understand how devastating a loss that was for us Canadians. It's still hurting. We now have to win 4 straight games + beat Russia in the quarters to win the gold. Not looking good. Miller is hands down the best goalie on the planet, and that empty net goal was ridiculous.
Sure there would be mass suicides, but only because no one even plays football outside of US pretty much and us losing would essentially mean that a bunch of random Japanese people off the street beat the likes of Peyton Manning, Derrelle Revis, etc. Canada losing in Hockey is much more similar to US losing in baseball or basketball.
Does Canada play any other sports than just Hockey?? The reason U.S.A kicks more ass than Canada is because we don't just limit ourselves to just 1 sport.. We are good at all types of sports, and there are no boundaries when it comes to competitive competition... That is why U.S.A has won more medals than any other country thus far... Welcome to the land of opportunities...
Did we just start doing this in 2010? Because we don't normally lead the medal count in the Winter Olympics. In 2006, Canada won about the same number of medals as the US, despite having 1/10th of the population of the US. Hmm.
I see the set-up to a really awesome movie blending cultural clashes with rip-roaring slapstick comedy crafted around an inspirational story line....sort of like a "Gung Ho" meets "Major League" meets "Remember the Titans"
The USA hasn't won a Winter Olympics by any measure (Gold medals or total medals) since the 3rd Olympics in 1932 which were hosted in Lake Placid. We did well in Torino and Salt Lake City but other countries did better. This year could potentially be our best Winter Olympics ever.
Canada has about 30 million people total, the USA has 300 million..... We should just annex Canada anyway, or start charging them for protection. DD
Thank you snowboarding etc...although the US has improved markedly in a lot of traditional sports, notably alpine skiing. Back in the late 80's, early 90's, the US was lucky to take home a medal or two in ALL the alpine events, now that's just the haul on an average day.
This may find this helpful. <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/tYoTJItSPt0&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/tYoTJItSPt0&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>
That was a great clip. I didn't realize the guy behind freeing the American hostages was Canadian. I also didn't realize how many planes and people Canada supported post-9/11. And -81 degrees... not including wind chill. Wow! I lived in Burlington, Vermont and we had some insanely cold days (around -20 without windchill) but -81 is beyond insane.
Also, why no love for Swedish hockey? I love their style of play. While Canada, Russia and the USA get all the attention, the Swedes are quietly breezing through opponents, despite being the reigning Olympic champs. After Canada, I'd say they have the deepest roster, top to bottom. Russia has a couple of potent forward lines and good goaltending but they aren't as well-rounded as Canada or Sweden. It sucks that Canada and Russia have to play in the quarters (assuming Canada demolishes Germany). I was hoping that would at least be a semi-final matchup, if not the finals.
It is, but that's a little misleading. Snag is in the Yukon, which is waaaaay up north. There will be places in Alaska that have been nearly that cold as well. Most people in Canada live in places that have roughly comparable winters to Burlington.
I should add that this ice size is very good for women's hockey. I predict that the Canada vs. US women's hockey game will be the most entertaining hockey game of the Olympics.
