other people on amazon says it does upconvert. but my tv does have an info button that i can press to tell me what res i'm in. I had to install some drivers on the xbox360 1st (comes with disc) to get the hd dvd driver to work. i assume, in that code/driver, there's some upconversion code. but pre-xbox360 hd dvd, i used my sony 480p dvd player cause it looked better than the xbox360 default. but this looks better definetly.
this guy has a better TV than me so he can confirm that it does upconvert and looks better for standard dvds http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/cu...2397036-9592629?ie=UTF8&n=468642&s=videogames SIMPLY AMAZING!!!, November 9, 2006 Reviewer: StringFlogger "Doomsayer" (Hee Haw Hell) - See all my reviews I just finished watching the included King Kong HD-DVD and the experience was amazing! The player works beautifully. The 1080p picture is truly breathtaking and for me it is as close to rivaling an actual movie theatre experience as you can get. The sound is a down-converted DD PLUS signal that is incredibly immersive, fine, and meticulous. Reviewer "Carbonadam" is correct when he states that regular DVD's played in this drive look better than in the main 360 player. The upconversion via this player exceeds that of any upconverting player I've tried on the market(Oppo included) in my opinion. My only early adopter gripes are slow menu switching and the lack of true DD+ output, hopefully remedied with the advent of an HDMI connection in the future. But for now, this is the way to go! The price/value cannot be beat! Very impressed.
I'm holding off on this... Rumors are abound that MS is releasing a XBOX 360 special edition with internal HDDVD to compete against the ps3...
This is what it looks like I think: I think you had to buy them separate (not included with the system IIRC). I suppose that could have included some code to help improve the upconversion. I know they put in a LOT of code just to get the 360 to work with HD-DVDs, so that wouldn't surprise me. I would think that after doing this, you would still get the same results from either drive though...unless there was some code to check if it was from the HD-DVD drive (which doesn't seem to make sense IMO). I haven't really checked into this all that much, so I might just be missing something. I'm not doubting this, I just don't really understand why it is happening exactly. I'll try to check out some of the Tech forums to see why this is the case.
baiter so you gonna pick up a vga cable for your 1080p samsung? check on ebgames.com for availability of the hd dvd player, i notice they have them in stock in stores here. King Kong HD DVD will just wow you.
I want to get one, but the HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray war scares me. Anyone have more info about which one is likely to survive?
Yeah, I didn't know they had a VGA cable for it. I'm tempted to pick up the HD-DVD because the Samsung upconvert DVD that I have sucks. I really don't like it because it ****s the bed on a ton of my burned DVD's. It seems really picky. If I knew that it supported burned DVD movies, it would pretty much be a lock.
Too early to tell. Right now, HD-DVD is having WAY better success IIRC, but there is still a ways to go and they started with some big disadvantages (no support from Sony, Fox, Disney, etc). After a couple more months, there might be a better idea of how things will end up (especially since this HD-DVD drive and the release of the PS3 could stir up things quite a bit). Some companies are also taking a "wait and see" approach as well, and if one side starts to pull away, we might see support for each format change (Disney supporting HD-DVD, Universal supporting Blu-ray, etc).
i'll, like vernon maxwell, try out a burned dvd, for you. cause vernon would do the same if he had a hd dvd player and an xbox!
the format war is going to end with both formats converging into one. It's called multilayer dual optical disk.
You mean layers for BR and HD-DVD versions of a movie on a single disc? That could work, but it would probably be really expensive, at least at first. Most HD-DVD movies require 2 layers, and if Sony is stubborn enough to stick with MPEG-2, a lot of their movies will probably be 2 layers (some longer movies will require this anyway, especially if they want to include good picture and sound quality). So we're talking about 4, maybe 5 layers (if HD-DVD can get triple-layer movies working) on a single disc for a single movie. I suppose if they worked on it for a while, they could reduce the price quite a bit, but I doubt movie studios would want to bother trying that out. If they do converge, I would think it would involve a new format all-together, or they'll go with players that can read both. I'm not sure how likely any of these things are though.
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/accessories/default.htm yes it comes with a remote and king king hddvd
I haven't heard anything in a while, but there were rumors about this a while back. I personally don't think it will happen (unless the drive is only for movies, in which case why bother making it internal). I hope it doesn't happen anyway. I don't really see how MS could come up with a way to have a 360 that plays games that are on HD-DVD or DVD, and a 360 that can only play games that are on DVD. So the 3+M people in the US that bought one would more or less be screwed. I'm thinking MS might face some problems in the future if games get too large, but I don't think this will be their solution.
For the same reason I don't care about BR in the PS3, I'm not ready to bother with the HD-DVD drive. Too many things up in the air right now for me to care about the 'format' war. However, a friend of mine does have it and is really impressed with King Kong. He says the quality is excellent. I'll look into it one way or another whenever this format question settles down.
I just got mine tonight as well, and I have my 360 hooked to my receiver via component cables. I have a 50" Hitachi Projection LCD. No HDMI, but it's also an older HDTV. King Kong looks and sounds amazing. Ideally I'd still like a 1080p set and a reciever with HDMI. But, so far I am very impressed. I guess the movies are technically playing in 720p, which is still high def. Just went and bought T2....and I can't wait to see Ahnold in high def.
