my friends samsung 1080p lcd has vga, but we both think the component 1080i out of the hd-dvd looked better. it think the colors were washed out on vga. however, i heard mixed things about vga, some great, some not great. if u dont like it, just return it at gamestop so they'll give u credit and u can buy another game or something else. i have netflix and i got mi-3 on hd dvd. awesome.
so picked me up earlier tonight. it will take some getting used to with the xbox remote but everything else is so far great. i bought goodfellas and watch it, it looked awesome, but it wasnt shot in true HD so it looked great but did not show the true capabilities of HD. I later popped in the king kong hd-dvd that came with the drive and it was AMAZING. but back to the vga issue, are people experiencing this with only the microsoft vga cable system? has anyone run tests with like the monster vga cables?
Here's something Im interested in knowing. Does the 360 hd-dvd player have an hdmi output? If not, can I use component cables for 720p amirite? This would be helpful if I ever decide to buy one and hook it up to my pc for hd-dvd movies.
it's definitely not an isolated issue. if you read the other thread here on clutchfans, I posted a link to a gaming site where it was being discussed and there were a lot of comparison pics between VGA and component on the same HDTV. VGA definitely has more washed-out colors. all the hardcore videophiles on AVS (pretty much the #1 Audio/Visual forums on the net) have been complaining about the 360's VGA connection for a long, long time I personally tested it myself last week on my big-screen Samsung DLP, and I experienced the same washed-out colors (compared to the 360 through component) as all the other people. now by no means did it look *bad* overall...if I had never hooked up my 360 through component, I would have thought the VGA connection looked great. it's still pretty sharp and crisp. but doing a back-to-back comparison, the colors difference is apparent and noticeable. I would really only recommend the VGA cable to people who have to hook up their 360 to a computer monitor. or if you absolutely have to have normal DVD upscaling and/or HD-DVD 1080p
no HDMI output whatsoever on the xbox 360 or the HD-DVD player component will give you 720p/1080i on HD-DVD discs, but still only 480p for normal DVDs
no hdmi, everything runs through the xbox, the drive is just a usb add on. people have hacked the xbox hd dvd drive already for their pc. http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/12232/Legal-Hack-Makes-Xbox-360-HD-DVD-Drive-Work-on-PCs/
GoodFellas is one of the weakest looking HD-DVDs I own(alongside Spartacus and Full Metal Jacket). It looks decent. It's just that it only offers a marginal upgrade over the SD-DVD. King Kong is arguably the best looking HD-DVD available at the moment. That was a wise move including it with the 360 add-on(unlike Sony which went with Talledega Nights for some odd reason).
compared to the original dvd i have for goodfellas it looked great. i should be getting spartacus through netflix soon and will compare it to the criterion dvd my roomate has. i am also getting last samurai and constantine to check out. too bad the king kong isnt the extended version which i had just bought 3 weeks prior i am trying to read more on the vga stuff. i am wonder if the monster cable vga is worth the extra 20 bucks to get. also is there a patch you need to get for the 1080p for hd-dvds? or did it come with the cd in the add-on? sorry i am really new to the 360s and video games in general i bought my 360 two weeks ago and havent honestly lived video games since the genesis days.
Just out of curiosity, a friend of mine was telling me that when you play a movie in the HD-DVD player, there is a 30 sec. to 1 minute delay before you see a picture. is this correct? If so, that would remind me of Laser Disc players. I'm not sure if BR-DVD has the same problem.
the update is on the disc and is an auto update from xboxlive for the system. MI-3, Batman and Training Day are great too. Hometheaterhifi.com has great HD-DVD/BluRay reviews.
I was comparing GoodFellas to the 2-disc SD-DVD, not the original flipper version that came out a long time ago. Compared to the latter, I'm sure the HD-DVD looks great. Don't bother with Spartacus. There's almost no noticable difference between the 2 versions. Easily the worst looking HD-DVD I own.
ok im thinkin bout goign to get one today, i have the 360 hooked up to a 50in samsung dlp, not 1080p..the surround sound is the bose 3-2-1 system so what cords will i need?
but its in all its high-def glory! its pretty sad how he stops his dvd during that part and goes as slow as possible. i dont know if its even sadder that i make sure to watch that one part every time he does it
if you already have surround sound and hd hooked up you wont need anything else. the hd-dvd player has no video out of its own. it hooks up via usb to the 360 and uses the 360's video and audio outs. so if you already have your 360 hooked up via component for hd and optical for surround then you are already set my friend!
