MS far from overdelivered, that's for sure. It was commendable that they got as many titles out as they did, but it seems pretty obvious it wasn't a top priority anyway. A shame.

However, backwards compatibility is a big deal....and it isn't. It's one of those things a system should offer in some form, and it is one of those things that people look for and is a big deal in the buying process.

And then it gets promptly ignored.

Really, I think it's one of those things people want but then hardly ever use. They could have done a much better job, but I don't think it will hurt them badly in the long run.

    Microsoft calms Xbox games fears

Microsoft has reassured players that it will continue to make old Xbox games playable on its new Xbox 360 console.

A entry on one of the company's blogs sought to clarify comments made by Xbox chief Peter Moore during an interview.

Game news sites picked up on remarks that suggested Microsoft was ending a commitment to make all old Xbox games work on the new version of the console.

In a blog entry, Microsoft said work on backwards compatibility was ongoing and another update was due very soon.

    Play time

The controversial comments were made by Mr Moore during an interview recorded at the E3 show that was recently released by UK games news site Kikizo.

At one point in the interview Mr Moore said: "Nobody is concerned anymore about backwards compatibility. We under promised and over delivered on that."

He continued: "More are coming, but at some point, you just go, there's enough, let's move on, or people aren't as worried about a game being backwards compatible."

Many Xbox 360 watchers took this to mean Microsoft was reneging on earlier commitments to make all Xbox games playable on the 360 console.

Widespread speculation and criticism on Xbox 360 fan sites led the software giant to issue some clarification on the Gamerscore blog that is written by Microsoft's games global marketing staff.

The entry on the blog said an update was due soon that would add another dozen titles to the roster of those that can already be played on the Xbox 360.

More than 200 Xbox games can be played on the next-generation console.

"But rest assured, we're not done yet," it added.

The blog entry said too many people cared about backwards compatibility to halt work on the development programme to move old games to the new console.

It only matters for a little while, and it is easy to do on some games and a b**** on others.

Games that are on multiple platforms, especially the PC are easy, other games that take advantage of certain features on the original X-box are not so easy.

Switching GPUs made it a LOT more difficult.

Oddly I have spent about as much time playing some of my old games on my 360 as I have my new ones. I would love to get more of my titles playable on the 360, because I feel like it is almost like getting a new game for free, as opposed to dropping $60.
