I'm really disappointed with the rumors surrounding Jack Black playing the Green Lantern. I really liked the cartoons as a kid, and the Jack Black version is going to be campy. Hopefully the rumors are wrong. http://www.aintitcool.com/display.cgi?id=17971
I agree with the Superman haters. He used to be my favorite superhero. And then I discovered that he's too perfect, and it started getting annoying. He has no personality, and there really isn't any drama unless Lois gets in danger for the 400,000th time.
What I never liked about Superman is the fact that one moment he is a newspaper geek with glasses and then slips on his suite, combs his hair the opposite direction and takes his glasses off and no one can recognize him. Dudes face looks the exact same. Wear a mask or something.
i could not figure that out either, how can no one recognize him? it's the only thing that ticks me off
bad move by singer, I was reading in the NYtimes that the only franchise movie licenses that can continue for a long long time are harry potter, spiderman and xmen. Besides, marvel has been wanting to buy DC for a few years, and they've recently accumulated enough to do it. DC's only trump card is Batman, Superman is flawed in his invincibility...and his costume, that thing will never grow out of his times.
Why would Time Warner give up DC Comics? Especially for what Marvel has on hand (roughly $50 million in cash last I read). Though Warners has recently done a poor job bringing their characters to the big screen, one hit could change the entire course. And I don't know how the only movie licenses with longevity are the three mentioned. A lousy movie can kill any franchise and a good movie can get any franchise going. At least with Singer at the helm, it apears Warners is taking a step in the right direction toward creating a movie that pays respect to the character and its fans, something that was certainly not the case when the project was with Peters and Burton and later with McG, that guy from Rush Hour and even Michael Bay (who was never officially on board, but it was sure the rumor du jour for a couple of days). As it is, DC's characters are doing quite well on television (between the live-action Smallville and the various cartoon incarnations of Batman, Superman, the Justice League and the Teen Titans). It's just going to take getting the movie people to quit being the idiots they are.
Wow, what's with all the Superman hate? Come on guys, he's the ICON. THE Super-Hero. I'm one of the biggest Spidey fans you'll find but am not ashamed to admit that without Supes, there wouldn't be a Spider-Man. Heck, there probably wouldn't even be a Batman, or any other larger than life comic book hero for that matter. So what if he's damn-near indestructable, he's SUPERman! There are some great stories where his immense power is useless. Give him a chance. Anyway, I thought the X-Men movies sucked donkey balls.
Superman criticisms are valid...though I've always thought the strength of his character was supposed to be the idealistic 'hero' role. Not so much his invulnerablity, but as the 'first' superhero, the true image of truth, justice, etc. In any case, while all those criticisms are valid....all it takes is a good writer. A good team on this, with a focus on the character, would make a kickass movie. Singer's work could be the first time something right has been attached to a Superman movie in forever.
Marvel has come back strong the past few years, sorry, no link. Although I don't think they have anywhere near the cash it would take to purchase DC. Batman and Superman are way too big of cash cows to sell.
They were bankrupt a few years back, but they have turned it around and are on solid financial ground at present. Though they are still an extremely small company when compared to a giant like Time Warner. Marvel has about $350 million per year in revenues. Time Warner runs $2.4 billion in operating income per quarter.
no link, as I read about it in the NY Times paper, but i've worked for marvel, and have ties with a few people that work there, including Avi Arad, and a close relative of mine is the banker of the owner. I get all the preview tickets for their movies , got to see spiderman 2 a week early, and no previews! on the otherhand, i did see the Hulk . Marvel's recent success comes from its new initiative to market its brand, and they've hired many talented lawyers to negotiate that they can get a larger lion's share of the profit. In the past, they tried making money off selling comic books, advertising and selling products based of its characters. As you might know, in 2004, you can't make that much money that way. With branding, they make close to 80% profit including legal fees and everything, thats why they dug themselves out of the hole so quickly. They should be able to ride spiderman and xmen for years to come, plus they are trying to get Elektra, iron man, namor, FF4, ghost rider, and even captain america out there. Again, with practice, they are getting a hang on making profitable movies. and even though the Hulk sucked, they have made a ton on the marketing and branding even before the audiences realized it was a bad movie. my inner child is crying in what they've done to change their comics and their "selling out", but mature business mind is impressed in what they've done to turn themselves around (for the investors, and less the harcore fans, although they are working on a happy middle). In otherwords, wolverine is cooler than superman.
Cool that you have connections in the comic book industry -- I'm jealous! But it wasn't the fact that Marvel has rebounded financially since they almost went bankrupt that I needed a link for. That's been well-documented, especially since their movies have done well. What didn't resonate with me was the notion that Marvel has been "trying to buy DC for years" and that they're close to doing that. I've never heard that anywhere else before, and I find it hard to believe they've bounced back so well so quickly that they can buy out DC. By the way, I just did a Nexis search of the NY Times for the past two years and didn't find it in there. (Didn't do that to prove you wrong, by the way, just wanted to find the clip because it sounded interesting.) Not saying you didn't read it somewhere else, though. p.s. While Wolverine might be cooler than Superman, Batman is way cooler than Wolverine.
oh yeah, you won't find that in the newspapers. I'll just say that the people who own Marvel have and are making enough money to start considering actually buying out DC. Have they thought about doing it? no question. Now, will they be able to execute? that's another question, the answer to which will be indicative on the public response to Catwoman, the next Batman and this superman movie. Ten years ago, DC was a better known company. Today, Marvel is clearly on top with much more room for growth. The success of those movies (as well as other factors) will depend on how much TimeWarner believes on the expendability of DC and whether or not Marvel can make a bid.
