81 years ago today, the war officially started as Germany invaded Poland and declared war on France and the United Kingdom.

Eventually, three of my great-uncles went to Europe. Two came back while the youngest remained. A fourth great-uncle went to the Navy where he served in the Pacific for most of the war. He retired to Kansas because he wanted to be as far away from the ocean as possible.

My grandfather was a railroad man when the war started and the railroad company would not release him to serve. He worked ridiculous shifts at the railyard in New Orleans and ended up breaking his back transferring tanks from rail to ship. He was never the same and had to spend an inordinate amount of time in bed the rest of his life.

A family friend who fought in the Battle of the Bulge could not stand to see snow in a forest for the rest of his life. He would break down and cry just thinking about it too much. He would never go to New Mexico or Colorado.

I hate Nazis and all fascists.

Let's not forget the lessons we learned at such a dear cost.

@rimrocker ...great post! Events like this shaped entire generations across the globe. So many lives changed because of stupid human behavior (Germany). It's crazy how history repeats itself on varying size scales...continually.

    Humans just won't learn.

RIP to all the servicemen and women who gave their lives. Your sacrifice was the ultimate.

My Grandfather was on Omaha beach on DDay. He told me stories about his 4 years in the service.

He hated fascists, and would despise Trump as a budding one if alive.

    Heroes to our country.

I'm no history buff and I don't mean to be that guy, but besides some grainy old film is there any real proof that World War II actually happened?

WW2 is just an old tale men would tell their wives so they could go out and drink.

The next one will likely be draining and soul sucking like WW1.

WW2 was payback on top of paybacks but I'm assuming this will only be capped as a trilogy...

I hope we science our way out of the catastrophic man made messes though it'll take a heavy dose of maturity on our parts to avoid the Big One in our lifetimes.

I had my own personal battle of the bulge in 9th grade.

it usually involved me leaning my desk while holding a book in front of my crotch.

my grandad wanted to be a doctor and was scheduled to go to med school somewhere in europe when suddenly ww2 broke out. the ship he was gonna board sank. so he didn't become a doctor.
