Remember the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, the most decorated military unit in United States history, composed entirely of Hawaiians and Japanese Americans. Remember the 2403 people who lost their lives 66 years ago. My great grandfather was sent to an internment camp, one of the few who were uprooted from Hawaii and sent to the mainland. It's only recently that I've been learning more about him, as his records of internment have been declassified. My grandfather volunteered for the 442nd, but was denied based on the fact that he was trained in making tires, and was deemed essential to the war effort in Hawaii. My great uncle was the only Japanese-American writer on the staff of the local paper. On December 7th, 1941, as planes bombed Pearl Harbor, he was sent to interview the Japanese Consulate. December 7th, 1941 is truly a day of infamy, one that is irrevocably intertwined in the branches of my family tree forever. It is a day that remains intrinsically linked to every person who lives in Hawaii. I encourage anyone who has the chance to visit the U.S.S Arizona Memorial. I went when I was in elementary school, when I was in high school, and after my freshman year of college. Everytime, I appreciate it more and more. Go for broke today.
both of my grandpas fought in wwii - one against the germans and one against the japanese. the one who fought against the germans ironically was german and would frequently talk about wwii - he was kind of the john wayne type - still carried the lead in his gut from when he got shot trying to cross the rhine and always showed the scar to the grandkids - my other grandpa was in the airforce and even when prodded, doesnt really have much to say about it - my grandmother is from india and had family in burma taken prisoner by the japanese - they both still hold grudges and there are still no japanese products in their house. my grandma wont even drink green tea! as far as the movie, i would be in favor of waterboarding michael bay. I miss you more then Michael Bay missed the mark When he made Pearl Harbor I miss you more than that movie missed the point And that’s an awful lot girl And now, now you’ve gone away And all I’m trying to say is Pearl Harbor sucked, and I miss you I need u like Ben Affleck needs acting school He was terrible in that film I need u like Cuba Gooding needed a bigger part He’s way better than Ben Affleck And now all I can think about is your smile and that ****ty movie too Pearl Harbor sucked and I miss you Why does Michael Bay get to keep on making movies? I guess Pearl Harbor sucked Just a little bit more than I miss you
not drinking green tea is a bit too much i just try to avoid japanese electronics or cars. bought an american car and not buying a ps3. but then again, both of my parents have japanese cars.
My grandfather fought in the Pacific with the Army Air Force. The pin he wore every day of duty is right by my monitor. Like the others have said, he rarely spoke of his time in the service until he was near death. When he did, my grandmother refused to listen to it and left the room. He's the one on the right, the left is my great grandfather from WWI.
Great photos! Your grandfather looks carefree and full of beans. Then reality hits. We have no real conception of what it was like when the entire nation was mobilized for war. I have some photos like those. You are proud of them, I'm sure, and should be.
I would also like to take this time to remember that it was three weeks ago that Alabama lost to ULM.
This may not be related to the topic, but ... I was just there in Oahu last week and sadly to say I had lost $4000 worth of camera equipments along with all the memory I've captured. My beg was stolen from my hotel room the day before I leave. I truly believed it was an inside-job and the the police thought so as well. I'm devastated right now. The hotel is Resortquest waikiki sunset. Do yourself a favor, don't ever ever ever stay there! Does anyone of you have similar experiance?
'Tis also the anniv. of Cmmdr. Cody Carlson beating the Bears on MNF, while filling in for an injured Moon. I was there. But Pearl was more important... but the movie, bleh.
I remember this date pretty clearly. All thanks to the goodness of remember historical dates in history class. That said, the event itself isn't exactly worthy of remembering. Not much of a battle, and mostly just an a**-kicking. Pretty much the stories I've heard on it were not exactly stuffs of legends. What came as a result, the declaration of war on Japan and Germany, is important though.
I swear to Christ, Deck, we see things in different lights, but, I would hope, we ultimately want some thing Universal. I know, I know. Those who don't follow history are doomed to repeat it... What? I'm not following, Peace has never worked?!? Has it been tried?!? Really? The Romans? Aqueducts? And women? Really? I'll be damned. Deckard, I know you, as well as a lot of your peeps mean well, but we were not built around a nation of. Crap, I'm in the wrong forum. Pardon, y'all.
Really sorry to here that, man. My girlfriend at the time left my Nikon on a park bench in Stockholm 35 years ago (I've had some bad luck with cameras!) and it was picked up by someone before we could rush back to get it. I know it doesn't make you feel better and isn't the same, but you made me think of it. Fatty, I just saw this and have no idea what you're trying to say, but my guesses would send this straight to another forum!
