I've been there and it is pretty cool. One thing about the PRC is that with the rapid development there is some great architecture there.

On the main subject. There have been many problems in the PRC that have been papered over. One of the biggest mysteries is why they haven't experienced a mortgage crisis like we did. The theory I've heard that is that the government pumped in a lot of money to sustain property prices. This current crisis has required a lot of government money and while the PRC has big cash reserves I don't know how deep their pockets are. The CCP power is based less upon fear and the surveillance state but on nationalism and that they have delivered rapidly a better standard of living. It's always been a question what happens when the PRC can't sustain that level of growth. While Xi is cracking down this might be too much contain. This isn't like Hong Kong, Uighars or currency crisis where they can blame outside forces seeking to split the China or counter revolutionary ideology. It's not like the 2007 Sichuan Earthquake where they can just throw money into it. This crisis will likely force a hard look and require some major changes. That's not just cracking down on wet markets and wildlife trade. There are fundamental problems regarding inequality in the economy, environmental degradation and authoritarianism that are all being brought up by this crisis.

Lots of bad debt, and state banks have already been forced to bail out the smaller regional banks - and I think the HK stock market recognizes this. Even pre-virus the big state banks were trading at P/E multiples of half of what American banks trade at in recognition of the bad balance sheets, and the virus is putting a huge strain on the economy. An article on the debt issue:

People protesting a mall? come on. This is no crisis. .... Chinese government have been through way way larger crisis multiple times.

The current crisis ( through Wechat with friends in China) is people are losing hope that this virus will go away. The current state of life is no life but everyone knows it will go on for a very long time but too desperate to spell it out. They were upbeat during the pandemic because they had a goal. Now they are still wearing masks and keeping as much distancing as possible as if the virus is still around. The classes will be taught on TV. People are working remotely.... The life has been changed forever.. to the sad direction. Not sure how government can lead people out of this depression. From the conversations, I feel I rather have the virus and be back to my normal life.

China is a step ahead of the world in that regard.

I really wish it's as simple as doing my doodie of going back into the office, slam a couple beers down at the brewery, overpay a little for a nice night out. It's a douchey feeling to shrug this "war" onto the weak and healthcare workers, but oh it's growing as I start to feel more and more grungy.

80% isn't that bad. I get immunity for a year or five with a "semi-bad" draw. Much better than betting on black in Vegas. **** people. It's all numbers

Sixty Minutes did a story about five years ago about whole empty cities in China built by the government in anticipation of movement into them because of expected economic growth. Cities for around 200K people

Not sure what you are implying to........but people were only wearing masks since January after covid19 happened. In 3-month period, only one confirmed case was found in my hometown with a population of 2 million. All these fuss.

    I am not implying anything.

People in China wear mask all the time.

Take a look at this article from 2015.

    https://www.indiatoday.in/magazine/...ues-pollution-delhi-beijing-821042-2015-12-17

And the wearing of mask were highlighted during the Olympics in 2008.

Or when you refuse to distribute test kits to states. That's another way to flatten the curve. My god, all of a sudden so many deaths from pneumonia!

Brave people to be protesting... the PRC has a history of turning people that protest into human paste.

I hope the protesters are not harmed.
