Have you been to Thelma's yet? I haven't. But Robb says it is his favorite bbq of all time....quite a statement, and being the author of the Texas BBQ book, Walsh likes to consider himself a good reviewer.

you named my 3 favorites, with blacks (lockheart) being my absolute favorite. of all time. they hit the trifecta - the best pork ribs i have ever had ANYWHERE, great brisket and tantalisingly tangy bbq sauce. i make a pig out of myself when i go there - those pork ribs are sooooo good.

and while salt lick is good, it is definately overrated - deal with it hippies! :D

Oh man, Hoover's jerk chicken is AMAZING!

Though for Q, is Tom Mueller's still across the street? That place used to be the best BBQ in Austin.

Has anyone every had Joel's bbq somewhere between Houston and San Antonio? Its a little shack, I believe. I've only been once, but I remember it was really good and I heard they had quite a following

i went to a to UT football watching party and it was catered by Muellers, I had a bbq sandwich it was great. the guy told me that they are opening a new location in the old airport area (that area is red hot real estate for businesses/upscale living).

i'll check out Hoovers when i get back into town. Also, the Iron Works downtown was good. I like their ribs.

I love Joel's! We used to stop there every weekend when we would go hunting. It is in Flatonia.

My boyfriend and I stopped by on a trip to SA a while back. We loved it but were a bit disappointed when we realized if we had waited a little longer we could've tried Luling City Market.

sadly, mueller's is gone. inside the austin city limits, there are few really good bbq joints. Ruby's (29th and Guadalupe) and Mann's (183 and Ohlen) are pretty darn good. Ruby's has killer, hormone-free beef from the B3R ranch. Mann's has killer brisket, ribs and sausage, but their side dishes are simply unmatched.

definately do if you havent been. it is not a bbq place though - hoovers is southern comfort food a'la threadgills.

best meatloaf in town. their chicken fried chicken is great as well. and definately get a blackberry or mango cobbler.

I like Ruby's too, though their sauce is too spicy for some of my friends and family. Good food, however, it is pretty pricey for the quantities you get.

It's sad how some of my favorite BBQ places are going downhill or disappearing. I guess I'm just going to have to start doing it myself. Too bad its so hard to man a smoker in an apartment complex. :)

AMEN! I ate there many times while I was at SHSU. I couldn't help it. I lived a few blocks south and if the wind blew right, I could smell it from my apartment.

Salt Lick is definitely one of the best I've ever had. I can put that sauce on anything.

Thelma's makes damn good barbecue, but I still feel that Williams Brothers Smokehouse in Acres Homes makes the best ribs in Houston....other than my place! ;) :D
