the sample size for Yao is a month or two so i can see where he is coming from......HOWEVER if Yao STARTS the season where he left off then the article can be refuted.

As for Yao and Dwight, they are on opposite ends of the spectrum but equal.

i dont give a.....what these writers say. statistacally yao is number one. heck, shaq made the nba 1st team and only played like 6-8 games more than yao and had less numbers. the reason miami was was, wade, and all the all-stars with paycuts that the heat have, not to mention a weak showing from dirk in the finals. i somehow wished both teams wouldve lost the finals and give the spurs the trophy by default. yao is the #1 center coming into this season, next season who knows, but right now, #1

Last time I checked Dwight Howard was a Power Forward not a center!

Ok, Shaq would be #1 but that is because he just came off a championship season...He isn't as good as he use to be but still effective...

Yao is #2, period...and will be #1 when we win the championship this year...

Sure, it's an opinion. Just like it would be no different if this was a best PG argument and the writer chose an older favorite like J-Kidd over the clear choice in Nash.

To me, it's an obvious matter. It may not be to you but then again that's just an opinion. ;)

The list is just crap.....putting PFs on the same list as Cs is just crap.....Shaq is argueable. But D.Howard and Amare?????? No doubt they are both top class players, but non of them would stand a chance 1v1 in the post against Yao..........I am just surprised about how these writers can ignore and performance of Yao last season...........

But if you're trying to convince the author why he's wrong, it doesn't make sense to say he's "neglecting" your opinion. You don't convince people with opinions; you convince people with facts and logic.

If he is going to throw PF's into the mix and call them centers, shouldn't he include Tim Duncan?

The "neglect" factor you're referring to comes into play during the first sentence of my original post when I hinted to the writer that I don't believe he's seen Yao play enough to make an informed decision.

....and facts and logic obviously don't work with this writer. Hell, he even acknowledges himself Yao's monster post All-Star break numbers yet still has him ranked behind players he statistically outplayed for the entire season.

Wow - that's a disturbing article. I know there are 6 pages worth of criticism on it, but I would love to add my two cents as well. If I'm lucky maybe I'll even be printed in a national sports column since you obviously don't have to be professional sports writer of any kind to write for CBS.

Shaq's is now riding the wave of his mythical past. The guy can be good in spurts, but I think we saw this year that he can't even bring it for one full game(more like a play here or there). Notice I said "good" and not great. Motivation issues aside, he doesn't have the quickness anymore(to go along with that size & strength) that made him so devestating in his prime. It reminds me of watching Hakeem late in his career where he was clearly not the player he used to be, but he was still good enough to be an effective center. Hell, Deke is still an effective center in spurts and he is well past his expiration date. Shaq at this point is a top 4 guy, but I think Yao ranks ahead of him. I'll rank Shaq a 3 or 4. If I had never watched basketball before and turned on the NBA this season only I might even rank him lower.

Dwight Howard - No doubt he will be a stud in this league. At this point he reminds me of a more raw offensively Kevin Garnett. Similar body type, same position(which isn't Center), similar stats. In his younger days Garnett cleaned glass and blocked shots just like Howard. If this "writer" is considering Howard a Center than why not Garnett(and Garnett should rank ahead of Howard). The sky's the limit for Howard but I still have him at my second spot out of the list of four that the writer gives.

Amare Stoudemire - I never really drank the Amare Kool Aid. Dude has freakish athleticism for sure - kind of a mini-Shaq thing in that he is very strong and very quick - meaning once he gets his body position on you, there isn't too much you can do to stop him from using his quickness & strength to blow by you for an easy dunk. I really don't consider him a center either but for the sake of argument... I have always seen Amare as a Shawn Kemp type of player - players with outstanding athletic abilities that allow him to excel but once the injury bug bites, they don't have the game to compete without athletic advantages. I suspect Amare is a mere mortal without his quickness. Give me a break, the guy is coming back from microfracture surgery. You want to see the list of guys who "came back" from it?

Chriss Webber, Allan Houston, Penny Hardaway, Zach Randolph, Jamal Mashburn, Kenyon Martin, and Jason Kidd.

Now they are all stars at one point in the career but I would argue that none of them really came back to their pre-surgery form. Jason Kidd is the only one on that list I would say came the closest and he never really relied on his speed or quickness anyway. I say the odds are against Amare although the fact he is still young helps in his recovery. Still though, he is a 4th best center on this list. I would actually put Jermaine O'Neal ahead of him at this point until Amare can prove he has fully recovered. Amare was fun to watch in his prime, but don't let that fool you into thinking he is a better center than Yao.

I'm being completely objective here when I say Yao was the best center in the league last year when he wasn't playing on a badly infected toe(he's top 3 even when he did). The guy scores inside and out, rebounds well(although we all wish he rebounded better due to his size), blocks shots, passes well, plays for the "team" - what else do you want? Tmac out? No problem, Yao puts in 38. Tmac back in? No problem, Yao draws a double and kicks back out to Tmac. Remember too that Yao is asked to do things defensively that Shaq was NEVER asked to do(like switch on screens). A 7-6 guy asked to step up on a PG - that sounds like suicide, but the Rockets have confidence in Yao. Now how many other 7ft plus guys can do all of that?

Between Kahn and this guy, is there a worse site for hoops cred?

    Just don't read this stuff.
