I will give Knicks a first round pick for that. That is like garanteed 7 wins out of 10 games every year.

You do realize in the last 10 games we were 4-6 against the Knicks, including 0-2 last season?

    1. The development of Eddie and Boki start in the summer league. Why would we want Larry Smith coaching that?

    2. You can start negotiating with FAs on July 1st, to sign them as early as July 15th. Why would we want Larry Smith to do that?

I swear, if we wait 6 weeks to sign Van Gundy and Posey leaves on a "take it or leave it" offer that some team makes with an Aug 1st deadline to decide...this bbs would scream bloody murder. Now, consider all the other FAs in the league that will be signing between July 15th and Aug 1st.

It makes absolutely zero sense to not get JVG in here right now to hit the ground running on the summer lineup of very important coaching duties.

I remember there was a lot of confusion at the time and some talk about throwing picks in and whatnot. But, I think WinkFan is right; when the dust cleared, the considerations were only money. Remember Cuban complaining that it was blackmail?

Also, WinkFan, those second rounders are valuable. There isn't too much difference between late first round picks and early second round picks in terms of talent. But, 1st rounders are a cap burden while 2nd rounders have almost no impact on the cap. I'd actually rather give New York a heavily-protected 1st round pick then a second-rounder (though I guess they wouldn't go for that either).

And at that, it's going to be a second rounder in a future year.

So, most likely, the Rockets are going to be improving (we can only hope), and add the fact that there will be the new Charlotte Bobcats-dropping a pick 2 slots (first round, 2nd round) lower than it would've been this year, and we're talking about a mid 2nd rounder. Keep in mind, Chicago owes us a pair of 2nd rounders as well, and my guess is CD will plan for the pick to be given in one of the 2 years we get their 2nd rounder.

Is it really worth tearing your hair out that we traded Bryce Drew for a 2nd rounder and the rights to Jeff Van Gundy?

and heypartner is spot on about the importance of getting JVG signed on the dotted line now. CD was quoted in this morning's Chronicle as saying he's already started to think about the summer league games, getting his staff together, the draft, and that JVG will be talking to Keith Jones (trainer/player liason) and Dennis Lindsey (director of player personnel) today and/or tomorrow.

I don't really agree here, especially if you are trying to say 2nd rounder picks are better (for the reasons you gave) and that teams will trade down late 1st round for no additional compensation, simply because of the cap burden issue.

first off, 2nd rounders become free agents quicker, and Mobley and Rashard Lewis proved that successful 2nd rounders can get more money in their first 3yrs that late 1st round rookie scale. Redd will prove this once again.

secondly, you assume that teams have to sign late 1st rounders. They don't have to sign a late 1st rounder, anymore than Utah signed Kirilenko 3yrs ago. That "cap burden" only exists in the summer months when unsigned, I believe, and it has no impact on the luxury tax...which is based on actual salary numbers. Kirilenko was zero luxury tax cap burden for about 3yrs until he was ready to play. Same with Ginobili, and he signed for more than late 1st round rookie scale right; whereas, I believe Kirilenko still had to sign at late 1st round rookie scale.

lastly, the minimum salary next year is $366k. The minimum salary contract for a 2nd yr player in year following is $620,046. So, that is $1m over two years, as the salary would go up with the minimum scale, no?

Compare that to 25-29 picks: which are less that $700k for 1st year, and only increase about 8% each year. the minimum scale has an insignificant difference for 2nd/3rd versus late 1st round rookie scale. Plus, the 2nd rounders become free agents quicker.
