Nice post, Jackie, although I'll add to what Mulder said (and you, really) about dialects and regional differences. I've been to the Netherlands many times (My wife has numerous relatives there) and asked about the difference between Dutch and Afrikaans, and Dutch to Flemish. They told me that they could converse with Afrikaners, but that it sounded more like "Old Dutch," and was a bit hard to understand. I also learned that there are several dialects in the Netherlands, which surprised me, considering how small the country is. Flemish is considered more along those lines, with the spelling being the same, but the pronunciation differing a bit in places.

    Just a fun D&D factoid, folks! ;)

President Obama made a very minor boo-boo. Nothing to it!

Remember the threads started about Bush during his presidency?

They were about constitutional preservation, or destruction. They were about the principles our nation was founded on, and what was happening to those principles. They were about preserving our nation's reputation. They were about a Justice department where racists were in charge of civil rights. They were about wars, and the safety of the United States of America.

If you start a thread that is only borderline on target in the first place and it is about something as trivial as this is, then have failed already, basso. You have failed before you even began.

I have a friend who is German from Munich and another who is Swiss from outside of Zurich. One time the Swiss guy invited the German to hangout with his other Swiss friends and my German friend told me he couldn't understand what the Swiss were talkign about even though they were speaking in German and Munich isn't that far from Zurich.

It is normal for all people to make mistakes, and busy people with many tasks on their plate can certainly be forgiven for some. But it happens to Bush more often than most, and it makes the guy look completely clueless, and takes away value from the words that he speaks.

That is correct. Afrikaans is very old dutch (like 18th century dutch). I was in South Africa for 4 months during my study. We could understand Afrikaans, but they had to talk slowly.

Flemish is a different dialect from normal dutch, it is more beginning 20th century dutch.

We do have some other languages in the Netherlands like Fries and Limburgs. But very few people speak that language, and they also speak normal Dutch.

my understanding is that Fries actually starts to get close to Danish in some respects.

Yeah a little bit. I really cannot understand people when they speak Fries. Afrikaans is easier for me to understand.

Yes deckard you have said that before. But you it is still nice to hear. Let me know when you visit the Netherlands again, we can get a beer (or something else since I do not drink alcohol)

Edit. I really have to check my posts before I hit Submit

I like that we're still on this several months later.

Newsflash - most of you pikers couldn't complete the HLS application, much less get on Law Review. So yeah, obama is dumb - taht's why he's the president and why you are hocking stereo speakers.

And yes, there is defintely a double standard there. Mediocre legacy Yale grads with no resume to speak of other connection-based "failing upward" vs. self made individuals moving in prestigious academic circles is the 85 Bears vs. 1983 Oilers. One is more inclined to get the benefit of the doubt than the other. That's why Palin was rightly classed as having the knowledge base of a very unintelligent high school student, despite all the fancy juco-dropping out on her resume.

Oh and let me add: GREAT NEWS FOR JOHN MCCAIN!

Don't mean to de-rail but this thread reminded me of a story about my grandmother: pure Sicilian born in US 1899.

Mid-70's, she said she wanted an album in "Italian" so I got her some "Italian" singing album. She puts it on, listens for a few minutes, makes a face, and says, "Pshaw, he's not speaking Italian" and makes me take it off.

Seems he was singing in some northern Italian dialect that to her Sicilian dialect, was not "Italian."

Cracks me up to this day.
