Luther did have some good moments with us. He was the key bench guy on JVG's team. Also remember that he really helped us during the 22 game win streak. He just didn't play well in the playoffs, and didn't play well this year.

This just continues the movement from the old JVG regime to Rick Adelman's: Rafer Alston gone , T-mac out , and now Luther gone.

Ok yeah the trade deadline passed but come on Luther Head or James White. This shouldn't even be talked about. James White is horrible. Your releasing one guy who could have gave you 2 mil off the salary cap at the end of the season but instead you release him but your still paying him. Not only your releasing Head but for James White who is a forward who wont see any playing time at all. Artest, Battier, Barry, Wafer. When is he going to see the court?? Who is he getting playing time over?? Mind me our couch is Rick Aldeman who gives his starters tons of mins. White is useless. Should have gone after a guard at least.

Head was a pretty decent player in the regular season. I remember I think he started one game this season and had a great night. Props for the Rockets organization for releasing him so that he might be able to get on a team this season. There are a couple of organizations where they could use someone with Luther's skill set if they give him a chance.

White is useless until someone gets hurt. Look how Wafer got his opportunity, people said Wafer would never play and look what happened. James White is a low risk-high reward 10 day contract and as injury prone as this team is you never know.

you got a point right there but still with just Brooks and Lowry it would have been a smart move to give another guard a 10 day contract. Hell I know he is done but hell go after Steve Francis or whoever. No need for anther wing player.

We still get 2 mil off the salary cap at the end of the season. It's clear he wasn't in the Rocket's plans, this season or next season. We now have a great opportunity test out another player. If he works out this season, then we can invite James back for summer training camp.

Damnit, now we'll never be able to say ever again say "McGrady runs down the court, looking for Head".

we have 2 spots available now.

james white is a good pickup. anyone who can average 26ppg on +50% shooting in the nbdl can be a solid nba player. plus the guy is an athlete. thats always a breath of fresh air here.

if he sticks (probable), then i expect the rockets to add a vet PG before going to the playoffs. anyone know what the deadline is on playoff eligibility?

From what I understand, its anyone released on or before March 1st is eligible for the postseason roster. (Monday the 2nd is too late). Thats why there were a few more cuts around the league on the 1st.

So if a veteran point guard hasnt already been cut, cant use him for the playoffs. I dont know the rule for players not on any NBA club at all. There'd have to be some rule in place, cuz then teams could sign a Euro guy over for the playoff run who's season is over, then he can go back to Europe.

We're all going to miss Head.

So long Luther and I hope he gets some playing time somewhere else. He is a good player but his skillset never meshed that well with the Rockets.

Didn't Cook fill one of those two spots? I've kind of lost track.

Wow your reasoning is lacking. First Luther was not going to play here. Second Luther was going to get paid whether he sits on Houston's bench or NJ's. Third Luther is in his contract and wants to play to have a shot at another contract somewhere. 4th the Rockets only use for Luther was as insurance for some injury to Artest Berry and Battier. 5th the Rockets need a SF much more than another 2. Barry, Artest, Wafer, Battier and even Lowry as seen last night can all take minutes at the 2. But only Battier and Artest can legitimately play the SF spot. So we got 5 players who can split duty at the 2 and only 2 for the SF. Since both are starters if one of them gets injured we are screwed. That means the other becomes the permanent starting SF with no backup. The SF is the place we need the most help.

In reality if Battier or Artest get injured we may be screwed anyway but at least we can see what this White kid is made of. And in the end it was out of courtesy for Luther who has been a perfect Rocket citizen and needs a chance to play to extend his career. He wasn't going to get it here, not in our future. So why not release him and pick up someone who might have a chance. Bottom line, it's only a very small (by NBA standards) 10 day contract. This was a no brainer as opposed to your belief it was stupid.

Yeah we only have one spot. Tmac and Dorsey or on injured list. And we have a 12 man roster now with Luther gone. Yao, Deke, Cook, Scola, Landry, hayes, Artest, Battier, Wafeer, Barry, Lowry and Brooks.

Make no mistake the Rockets didn't just release Luther out of kindness. They see White as a need more than Luther. So they Luther walk with some free money, but it only is going to cost them a couple of hundred grand if White makes the team. ANd if he doesn't peanuts.
